RIP HD

My computer wouldn't boot up this morning; yep, my hard disk has died--yet again. Greg, ex-hardware engineer, installed a second-hand one last time. I hope he finds another to put in soon because I hate using IE7 on his PC, not to mention the cramped mousing position among all the cables and extra stuff. I miss Firefox and its spell-checker.

And since the printer's attached to my PC on the network, I can't even print from here. Damn. I'll actually have to write a note to a friend by hand. This is not easy. I'm a bit out of practice except for scrawls meant only for me and somtimes illegible at that.

At least my stuff is backed up every night so I won't have lost anything.

If there isn't much room for Greg's mouse where it is, has he considered a trackball?

It doesn't seem to bother him. I had to clear a bigger space and remove all the crumbs.

Sadly the last few backups didn't work because of the disk problems so we're going to try to get any files newer than that off the old disk. But I'm back on my machine with a server-grade disk.

I'm back with a new (to me) disk but my machine has a touch of amnesia. The last few backups didn't work so we'll have to try to get the newest files back including some photos. :-P

While you are waiting for your new HD may I suggest using Portable Firefox (http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable) on a flashdrive? This is how I get round using garienos' computer when I am at his house without messing up his settings. I also used to use it and various other bits of portable software from that site at work.

I have that on a flash drive! I hoped it would just be a day but Greg said I could download Firefox proper. Then I can get my spell-check back and adblock the annoying month's headers.

It turns out that the backup hasn't worked for a week or so because of the disk problems (if only I'd known) so I'll have to extract my latest photos and emails etc from the HD if I can. :-(

Most of it is. The disk problems stopped the backups working about a week ago, I've now found out, so I'll have to retrieve my latest photos and emails from the HD if I can.

I just hope I can get the stuff that wasn't backed up (emails and a few photos) off the HD. Greg thinks so. [crosses fingers] There were two lovely photos of Ashley, and I want my latest emails too.

I'm back with Firefox on my own machine, yay, but we still need to rescue some files from the old HD since the last few backups didn't work. So yeah, slight PC-amnesia at the moment.
