Cat in the air-conditioning duct
Jasmin must have read one of the stories I uploaded onto my site yesterday, Rebels and Rats (in which Vila and Avon are reduced to the size of cats to infiltrate a Federation facility via the air conditioning ducts) because I was unnerved (to say the least) to hear scrabbling in the hot-air exhaust last night.
We have proper installed air conditioning in the dining/TV/kitchen area but I had to buy this portable unit to make the living room, in which I spend a lot of time, liveable in summer. See the flexible tube snaking towards the door?
That's where she was. Luckily it was evening, not the blazingly hot afternoon it is now, and the unit was off. There's a narrow flared end (that's hard to see in the bright sun) that must have been loose because it was lying on the deck outside. I was about to disconnect the duct from the unit to get whoever it was out when there was more frantic scrabbling and the tip of a tawny tail appeared followed by the rest of Jasmin. [shakes head at lunacy of cat now sitting on couch looking like butter wouldn't melt]
I did disconnect the thing and look down it in case there was a lizard or a cat toy in there but it was clear. The narrow end is now very firmly on.

But sometimes a frightened cat panicks so much that she petrifies completely - this I have experienced several times with Tygr - you can´t get them away, the only way is to leave and wait. Very unnerving!
Hopefully this is not like Jasmine:-)

If Jasmin got in there again, she's just back out, and if not I could detach the duct and call her towards me.

Ouch, given what curiosity is proverbially supposed to do to cats :-( Glad she came to no harm.

Ashley was sitting by the duct just before in the sphinx position, and really, she was about the same height. Jasmin must have been quite cramped--and determined--in there.

The tube does look inviting with sun filtering in and I wonder if it made her think of the games we play with her under the sheets as the light's similar.

I've had to haul Iella out from a narrow space behind the sofa by the scruff of her neck a couple of times now. She probably could get herself out if necessary, but I'm hoping that the undignified removal will disencourage her from going down there in the first place.

Still at least you heard her before activating it.

I hope you had a great birthday on the 22nd. I'm hopeless at birthdays because LJ reminds me about 3 days ahead and I forget.

Tessa got into the neighbours' walls once and terrified the babysitting grandmother late at night with her giant mutant rat scrabbling. (And me who'd been looking for her for hours.)

I had little choice but to thrust my hand through the gap and grab hold of him and pull him out. It was one of those old cage lifts, like you see on period dramas, and if anyone had used it I feared he would be squished. We were both covered in thick black grease, but unharmed
