Day 21 - Thai wooden cat

For [livejournal.com profile] naarmamo today it's a Thai wooden cat, not as stylised as they usually are but still with that fairly distinctive arched look (see the blue one I did last year). It's slightly carved around the eyes and tail, varnished, and painted. I also have a set of three black and gold ones.

The arch of the back should be higher and sharper, but the face really is that big in comparison to its body.

My NaArMaMo 2010 Gallery is here.

He's got lovely markings. I really like the delicate woodgrain effect you've achieved and the highlighting is excellent.

I'm glad the woodgrain shows up. I wasn't sure if it was obvious enough.

I agree about the woodgrain.

He's a rather charming cat.

He is! I like his face better than the more traditional ones.

Are the smiling faces traditional? You can really tell it's a wood carving.

The arched back and flatness are traditional, but actually the face isn't. The blue cat and the three black and gold ones have the traditional face; this one seems very western for some reason. Maybe it came from a different region.

Cool! It really, really does look like carved and painted wood. The highlights really pull out the shape.

I'm pleased that it looks like wood! I'm thinking it's a different style from the others I have (in face, pose, and the fact that it's not painted all over) so maybe it's from a different region or something. Or it's Indonesian. The wood is a lot heavier too; the others are balsa or similar.

I do have two Thai looking cats (designed to perch on a shelf and look down) I should also draw, both the same (I bought one and was given one) and they're very realistic and also varnished and lightly painted in places.

I read that Thailand carving used to be mainly with teak- not sure if that's still the case. Your carved cat collection is wonderful!

This one and the looking cats could well be teak, but the other flat arched ones are very light and breakable. The blue one was broken by Jasmin last week (she pushed it off the shelf) and it's the second time I've had to glue a leg back on. :-P

Jasmin just wanted to see if it could fly. :^)

Lovely! Adore the cheeky smile too. :)

Thanks! I think I bought this one in the eastern imports place in Kerikeri.
