Day 11 - U is for UFO

It's another SF ABC for [livejournal.com profile] naarmamo today, one that wasn't too hard to draw. :-)

U is for UFO

Since several people reported a UFO last week in Mission Bay here in Auckland (not far from where I live), I added some sea and Rangitoto to the scene. ;-)

[Edit] I've found out what it was! I'd thought it might be a kite because it was hovering and several people saw it, but I did wonder about the lights. Ah, they do like their kites here. You see a lot in the area.

My NaArMaMo 2010 Gallery is here and my SF ABC Gallery is here.

That pilot looks sneaky and happy at the same time, I like him.

I agree!
Love the little lights too

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-08-11 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I was going for that!

[identity profile] san-valentine.livejournal.com 2010-08-11 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)
That's charming. I love the night sky especially- that's really well done.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-08-11 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I was hoping the clouds would work.

That's great! I love the U repeating his skin tones and the UFP repeating the color of the ship and lights. :^)

I always try to match the letters to the colours in the drawing in some way. I'm particularly pleased with the gradient effects I got this time.

We haven't had any UFO sightings for a while. Life is more fun with little green men :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-08-11 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
We had the flashing lights in the sky anyway; I wish I'd seen them.

It's all fun and games till someone gets probed! ;-)

I thought I'd weigh in with a few suggestions for other letters:

Bb for binary star/blaster pistol

Cc for comet/corona

Dd for dwarf star

Ee for eclipse (I bet you could do something really pretty for that)

Kk for Kepler's Laws

Ll for lasers/laser gun

Tt for teleport/time travel

Feel free to use or ignore as you please.

I already have the last two! I still haven't made up my mind which T to go for.

For the rest, I have bug-eyed monster (a staple of classic SF), clones, domed city, energy beam, kraken, orbit, wormhole, and yeti. Some of yours (e.g. comet) would be easier to draw or depict, so I'll definitely think about them and swap some around. I'm certainly open to suggestions, and I don't mind if they're science and not fiction because I already did planet and moon (though implying people visited them regularly.

[identity profile] san-valentine.livejournal.com 2010-08-11 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I like bug-eyed monster and wormhole should be good.

Kraken should be easier to illustrate than Kepler's Laws; it was the only thing I could think of for K. And as we've had space whales, maybe it should be a space Kraken.
I figured that the science ones would be OK, as you'd already done the moon and planet.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-08-12 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, the fiction part was the alien on the moon and the sign in orbit round the planet. A space kraken sounds like something from B7; they did like "space" as an attributive noun. I was going to draw a fishing dinghy but the view from inside a spaceship or a submarine would be more fun.

Ahahaah, I love it.

Any news places pick up on the Auckland UFO sightings? I always love reading about them. XD

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-08-11 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
There's this (http://www.stuff.co.nz/auckland/local-news/east-bays-courier/3993453/UFOs-seen-in-skies). Ha! Orakei is even closer, between us and Mission Bay / the sea. I wish I'd seen whatever it was. Why would they be here though? For the Moevenpick gourmet ice cream they sell on the waterfront? :-)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-08-11 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahahahaha, and I've found out what it was (http://www.ufoinfo.com/sightings/newzealand/100700.shtml)! I'd thought it could be a kite because it was hovering and several people saw it, but I did wonder about the lights. They do like kites here.

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2010-08-11 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Fantastic! Thanks for both links! That's so much fun, ahahaha. They really do sound like extraordinary kites. I'm really shocked though, that in this day and age of camera-cellphones and digital photography that none of the people observing the kites thought to snap a photo or video!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-08-11 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I would have, with my phone! However you'd probably only get the lights.

Fun! I love how the word "UFO" matches the UFO, including the flashing lights.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-08-11 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I always try to match the letters in some way but I was especially pleased with these.

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2010-08-11 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I do like the ship, pilot and lettering. Such a nice alien to visit us!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-08-12 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
My universe is a friendly one! :-)

[identity profile] luinielle.livejournal.com 2010-08-12 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I love it!! Your alien looks like he's having a fun time driving and I love his pastel lights. I also really like the 'ufo' lettering. Great fun!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-08-12 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
I'm very happy with the lettering effects, and I'm pleased with the drawing; it came out better than I'd imagined it would.
