Day 7 - G is for Galactic Empire

It's another SF ABC today for [livejournal.com profile] naarmamo. It was going to be a galaxy, but they're not exactly SF since they exist, so it's that good old staple of space opera, the galactic empire.

G is for Galactic Empire

Some may recognise this (hopeful) galactic ruler.

My NaArMaMo 2010 Gallery is here and my SF ABC Gallery is here.

A lovely combination of arrogance and decadence!

I love the 'mine' :D

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2010-08-07 07:15 am (UTC)(link)
That "Mine!" is adorable. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-08-07 07:18 am (UTC)(link)
As soon as I thought of that, I knew what I was drawing.

Ahhahaha, fantastic.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-08-07 08:31 am (UTC)(link)
I almost put a "mwahahahaha" in there but Servalan just doesn't do that.

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2010-08-07 09:11 am (UTC)(link)
That's great! Even I know who she is. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-08-07 10:59 am (UTC)(link)
You probably can't help but acquire some B7 knowledge around here. :-)

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2010-08-07 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed. :)

I got to thinking about galactic empires, and I wondered who was the first writer to come up with the idea. Isaac Asimov used the concept in his "Foundation" stories, the first of which was written in the early 1940s, but I suspect that the idea goes further back than that.

I love his Foundation series; they still stand up well. You can see in places that he based his on Rome and its fall. I think Terry Nation nicked the idea of psychostrategists from Asimov's psychohistorians, though the B7 ones work on a very personal scale which is the opposite of Asimov's.

Hee! That made me LOL. :D

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-08-07 11:01 am (UTC)(link)
Of course the "Mine!" could be a command. ;-)

She wishes {snicker}

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-08-07 11:19 am (UTC)(link)
She did hold some Empress title in S3, but yes, she only had part of the galaxy. Which would be totally untenable in reality, but hey, I like my space opera!

Servalan! She may have been scary as hell, but boy did she have style. :D Even in some of the dress-monstrosities she wore, she still carried herself as a beautiful, powerful figure.

[identity profile] redstarrobot.livejournal.com 2010-08-07 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I adore Servalan. She's, like, a role model. Sort of.

Uh-huh. So, if you were to call yourself her successor of sorts, have you the firepower, political power, (wo)man power and personal armor needed to ensure your survival to said succession?

[identity profile] redstarrobot.livejournal.com 2010-08-07 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not calling myself her successor until I have the dressmaker necessary to ensure my survival.

A galactic M would be able to advise you, surely. And there will always be an M. If Servalan had consulted M and not gone gallivanting around, she might still be Empress.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-08-08 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
I once wrote a fic in which she decides that the wearing of inappropriate clothes and disregarding social and military conventions is a sign of power.

[identity profile] pinkdormouse.livejournal.com 2010-08-07 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Wonderful!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-08-08 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! :-D

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2010-08-07 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh that is brilliant! I love it, "Empress Servalan" with a Ming style chair.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-08-08 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
It was in the big list of titles we heard in S3. I think it went to her head; she called herself "supreme empress" at one stage.

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2010-08-08 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Empress Servalan, love it. :-p

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-08-08 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
It was one of her titles. :-)
