Library cats P.S.

There's a Library Cat Map! And there are three library cats in Auckland; who knew? In a fairly close suburb is Xena, and Casper and Benjamin are over the harbour bridge. I may have to go and see Xena.

Perhaps there's a library cat near you. :-)

That's neat--there are three or four near me. Xena is gorgeous!

I shall take my camera! I'll probably go when there's a market day nearby so I'm not disappointed if I don't see her.

That's what's wrong with our departmental library! It's a great library, but there is, as yet, no cat in it.

I may have to talk to someone about that. :-)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-04-20 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
The cat may have to choose the library though.

This is fantastic! Arrrgh, our idiotic rules even FORBID keeping animals in offices, parochial, humourless and sour ones!!!
I want a cat in my library! I want a cat in my library! I want a cat in my library! I want................................................................................................................etc.

Awww. Well, I note they included the occasional plush cat in that map. Perhaps you could bring a life-sized one in, then put yourself on that map. :-)

Indeed- knowing my boss, she would forbid it too because "we are a serious institution". I do have a ginger plushie, adorable and fluffy...

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-04-20 10:50 am (UTC)(link)
You could just take it in and put it on your desk. :-) I always had at least one personal item like that at work.

It looks as though there aren't any closer than a couple of hours drive from me. Still, I'm pleased to see that there is a history of library cats in the UK.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-04-20 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
Anyway, it might be hard to find the cat when you got there. One person said she'd been to a library for years without knowing it had a cat.

Oh that is so cool! *_* Thanks for the links. And, I have to join the chorus of I WANT A CAT IN MY LIBRARY! Every workplace needs a kitty to be boss. =^.^=

My Liz icon! :-D

I think a lot of the cats just turned up or were strays. But you never know your luck!

[identity profile] zoefruitcake.livejournal.com 2010-04-20 12:12 pm (UTC)(link)
none near me, sadly

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-04-20 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I was amazed to find three. Two aren't in libraries that are part of the city system, but they will be this year. Xena is only two suburbs away so I'll visit and peruse their SF shelves; a friend says they're good for SF, but she didn't tell me about the cat (and she's a cat-lover too).

Aww, if I have a day to myself, I could go visit a Library Cat!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-04-20 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
You could! I've come across cats in shops and restaurants, but not libraries--so far.

[identity profile] bigdamnxenafan.livejournal.com 2010-04-20 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
OH they are all so lovely! Xena is of course my favorite. :D

Our town library has a cat named Faulkner. Several of the bookstores in town have felines in residence as well. I think they make the place more inviting.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-04-20 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought you'd notice that! :-D

I've seen cats in shops--the local pet supplies place has a lovely one I always say hello to, and have sometimes tried out toys on--and the occasional restaurant. When I post my holiday pics, there's a café cat. :-) The cat in the icon I've met three times at a holiday place we rent, but I think she's a visitor from a nearby house. I always forget to ask.

Aha! I was about to reply to your query but I see you've found it already. Do let us know how you get on with meeting Xena.

None near me, sadly.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-04-20 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I shall take my camera! I've met resident cats in other places though: an office, shops, restaurant, cafe... That's just as good. :-) I always pet and play with the resident cat at the pet supply place where I'm probably going today.

Saw this tribute to a railway cat at Kettering on Wednesday:

Aww. That's sad as they'll miss him, but he had a happy and loved life.

Xena, Casper and Benjamin are adorable - Casper looks like he's in heaven in that yellow basket. I'm a bit surprised there aren't any cats in libraries near us, except for the statues Patience and Fortitude. During the holiday season, they get decked out with wreaths.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-04-25 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
And so they should! Those guys are famous, and people must be find of them. I didn't know their names till now though. :-)
