New Who

Like many others I am delighted that we seem to have the old-style Doctor Who back, full of adventure and wonder and fun. Not that I've seen that much classic Who, but I remember watching Four and some of Five and thrilling to the title music.

The Eleventh Hour was a lot of fun, and I enjoyed The Beast Below too. I'm sure there was a deliberate homage to Star Wars in there: "Help us Doctor, you're our only hope", the rubbish chute, and being in a creature with lots of pointy teeth. Oh and Discworld at the end. :-)

I'm not sure how the entire populations of counties fitted into single buildings, but I suppose there weren't that many people still alive by the time they left Earth. Liz X rocked--boots, a pistol in each hand, what's not to like? I hope we run into her again, perhaps when they find a planet to settle on. Why did she speak with an RP accent on the tape, yet with Estuary in the present? Perhaps because she only remembered the last few years, or because she used the accent as a disguise? I also wondered when Amy made her recording, and why she needed to.

But um, Doctor, you not interfere? What was all that about? That aside, I do like this Doctor and Amy a lot.

I'd be saying, "not Daleks again", but WW2, Winston Churchill, and Spitfires In Space tip the prospect into awesome.

I made a few icons since I felt the need to have an Eleven and an Amy one. Here are the ones I didn't choose in the end if anyone wants one. I know the aunt one is a misquote but it fits better. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] kerravonsen for the border brushes. :-)

Good god, Eleven has ridiculous hair. I don't really notice it on the show because he plays the Doctor so well, but in still photographs he looks awfully silly, the poor thing.

Er, I don't notice it because Matt Smith plays the Doctor so well. I can't edit comments in DW, unfortunately.

Spoilery comment (for those not reading the spoiler post)

[identity profile] daiseechain.livejournal.com 2010-04-13 08:53 am (UTC)(link)
May I take 1, 5, &6 please?

I really want an Eleven icon that says 'Eleventy!'

I've been enjoying the new series too. The bit about the Doc not interfering was also a reference - to his earlier self. The First Doctor always went round saying they were never to interfere with events, right before he did. In fact there's a lot in this version that harks back to his first two selves. Very eccentric and whirlwind and temperamental.

Amy recorded the message right after she'd seen the tape, but before she hit forget, and I think she did it because she'd already figured out he wouldn't be able to leave well enough alone and would end up having to make the awful choice he very nearly made.

I'm going with the theory that Liz 10's accent changed over time, living much closer to everyone than she would have previously. I also totally need a Liz 10 icon. She did indeed rule ;-D

Re: Spoilery comment (for those not reading the spoiler post)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-04-13 08:57 am (UTC)(link)
Of course!

That makes sense about Amy. And I suppose I miss a lot of classic Who references.

I'm happy to put "Eleventy!" on the icon or screencap of your choice. :-) Would you like a Liz 10 icon? I could have a go at one for you. :-) I'd love to find a cap of her with both pistols.

[Edit] I can't find any photos of Sophie Okonedo in that role. Since you live in the UK, you might be able to. I don't bother going near the BBC site as they lock me out of most stuff.

The BBC episode gallery has two of her pointing one gun... Hang on, I've found a new screencap gallery (or one I didn't know before). How's this (http://doctorwho.sonicbiro.co.uk/gallery/displayimage.php?album=164&pos=285)?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-04-13 10:14 am (UTC)(link)
I probably can't see the BBC gallery, but that's a good one. Thanks!

[identity profile] kalypso-v.livejournal.com 2010-04-13 10:31 am (UTC)(link)
And somewhat unexpectedly, I find I have made an icon myself... (not quite in time to edit the comment where I forgot to pick one!)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-04-13 10:34 am (UTC)(link)
Good one! He doesn't look very human there.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2010-04-13 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Unless they've changed it, the image gallery isn't locked to the UK, even though the videos and stuff are.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-04-13 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh OK. I know some large screen shots I found once were so I just never go there.

Re: Spoilery comment (for those not reading the spoiler post)

[identity profile] daiseechain.livejournal.com 2010-04-13 10:41 am (UTC)(link)
Oh that'd be lovely thanks!

Eleventy! would be great if you could fit it onto icon 4? I know it might be tricky, but sideways might work?

And yes. Liz 10 with her pistols would be grand. She was at her most awesome just then. (I'll just go check out [livejournal.com profile] kalypso_v's link.)

Re: Spoilery comment (for those not reading the spoiler post)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-04-13 10:59 am (UTC)(link)
I had to do it from scratch so it's slightly different, but here you go!

Pistol-packing Liz is below. :-)

Those are great! Thank you!

I've nicked a couple from the BBC site and saved them to my scrapbook here (http://pics.livejournal.com/daiseechain/gallery/00021fd2) if they might be useful to you for other icons.

(Sorry about the slow response times - technical problems)

Re: Spoilery comment (for those not reading the spoiler post)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-04-13 11:43 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! And that's OK; I should go to bed now anyway.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-04-13 10:33 am (UTC)(link)
OK, how about this one for Liz?

Let me know which icon or cap you'd like "Eleventy!" on. :-)

Ooh, nice! (Re mine, I like reminders that he's not really cuddly.)

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2010-04-13 09:23 am (UTC)(link)
Great fun, wasn't it. :)

I'm not sure that there was any meaning in the Doctor saying he never interfered beyond it being a good joke given his past form. Amy had him figured out pretty quickly, though. "So you never interfere except when you see a child crying?"

Lots of people have mentioned Staw Wars references, but I must admit they had passed me by. Though I've seen the gilms, I dopn't remember a rubbish chute or being inside a creature with pointy teeth.
ext_6322: (Dr Troughton)

[identity profile] kalypso-v.livejournal.com 2010-04-13 09:53 am (UTC)(link)
The most obvious one was a royal woman saying "You're our only hope."

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2010-04-13 10:01 am (UTC)(link)
Now that one has been pointed out it's obvious, but I confess that I didn't notice it at the time.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-04-13 10:11 am (UTC)(link)
In the first film, Han, Luke, Leia, and Chewbacca go down a chute to a place full of rubbish, liquid, serpentine creatures, and walls that close in. In a later film, Han and Leia hide in what they think is a huge cave in an asteroid, but it's a stomach, and when they escape in the Millennium Falcon, it's through closing pointy teeth. :-)

Now I think of it, being vomited out should have put the Doctor and Amy in space.

[identity profile] sallymn.livejournal.com 2010-04-13 09:57 am (UTC)(link)
They are wonderful :) I'm looking forward to seeing Eleven... I've missed the magic.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-04-13 10:17 am (UTC)(link)
Really? From you that's praise indeed, but they're very plain.

I do think the magic is back, and I'm very much looking forward to the next ep which hasn't happened for a long time. :-)

[identity profile] sallymn.livejournal.com 2010-04-14 11:10 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes the trick is knowing when plain is best... :)

[identity profile] bramblyhedge.livejournal.com 2010-04-13 10:48 am (UTC)(link)
The magic is most definitely back. I watched DW from when I was 7 years old and Eleven's really recaptured that feeling. :)

There was a moment when he said something like "I don't get into trouble...badly". (LOL!) Which is all anybody needs to know about the Doctor (past and present).

I would be saying DALEKS AGAIN, URGH, too -- except that he called Churchill "dear" on the phone. XD Plus it's a historical, so, yay. :D

P.S. Great icons! :) You have a nice, clean style.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-04-13 11:03 am (UTC)(link)
I may have to watch these episodes again, that's how much I like them! And really, retro WW2 Daleks might be OK, and Churchill and Space Spitfires definitely are. :-D

Thank you! I have now also done a pistol-packing Liz in request:

Image

[identity profile] bramblyhedge.livejournal.com 2010-04-14 08:36 am (UTC)(link)
I have to admit, the Daleks with a bit of camo and a wee Union Jack label was kind of endearingly quaint. :)

LOL! Okay, I'm going to have to snag Liz 10 (with credit).

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-04-14 08:42 am (UTC)(link)
:-) Sure!

Nice icons! I'd like to take #4--I also find myself enjoying the new series a lot.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-04-13 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
#4 is yours! :-D

It will now be the highlight of my viewing weekend.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2010-04-13 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I also wondered when Amy made her recording, and why she needed to.

The Doctor said she was missing about 20 minutes, and presumably the Awful Truth Orientation Film was shorter than that, so she had time. And she probably figured that a) the truth and the moral dilemma were so awful that she didn't want to subject the Doctor to them, and b) if he made a different choice and followed through on it -- which was entirely possible -- everybody on the ship could die. It might have been nice if that were a bit clearer, though.

But um, Doctor, you not interfere? What was all that about? That aside, I do like this Doctor and Amy a lot.

I told you, it's about him being funny. Hilariously funny, IMHO. But maybe it works better if you know earlier Doctors. If you remember him saying things like "Interfere? Of course we'll interfere! Always do what you're best at, I say!" it's be pretty much impossible to actually take him seriously, even if he didn't completely undermine it himself about two seconds later. :)

And I think I may have to steal #7. That is gorgeous.

[ETA: And my apologies for not reading all the other comments before answering with stuff other people already kind of said. :)]

I know you said it was funny but I still didn't get it. I just don't have the history, or the internet access to rectify that.

[Edit] And BTW I wasn't the only one. [livejournal.com profile] redscharlach had a similar reaction (http://redscharlach.livejournal.com/203168.html) and she's certainly not ignorant like me.

I'm glad you like it! #7 is yours!

There's an interview with Gatiss in Radio Times. He reminisces about first watching DW and the Daleks in 1972, aged 6, and says he's trying to get back to the old cunning, manipulative Daleks.

There are three versions of RT cover this week. With the elections coming up you can have your Dalek in red, blue or yellow, to go with the party you support. I of course had no choice, the newspaper boy delivered it, it will have been whichever was next on the heap.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-04-13 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a very cool idea!

I'd like No 8, please.

Of course! :-)

The new season starts tonight here and I'm looking forward to seeing it.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-04-17 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Excellent! You're only two episodes behind which is very easy to handle in terms of avoiding spoilers and still joining in discussions. :-) I'm very much enjoying this new season: the third is tonight for me.
