Power glitches and otters

There were two brief off-and-on-again power cuts last night (while we were watching Life of Brian and both times they made my PC reboot which showed me that the UPS is fried. Sigh. Greg's going to bring home a spare one from his work. His PC, much newer than my old one, was fine even without a UPD as it has a bigger power pack with a built-in surge protector.

This was in the news today, about two otters in Nelson: inseparable for 15 years. Awwwwww. [loves otters] Make the picture bigger; it's sweet. I'm glad they had such long and happy lives.

ah ah computer stuff. as long as its okay and there is internet it's cool

AWWWWWW. I just bawled my eyes out at the otters thing. I know it's so cute and sweet but now they're dead and I'm having a stupidly emotional day. I went home just to get out of uni-place-town and it's already driving me insane.

I worry about this puter. It's 5 years old, even though it has a new hard disk. :-P

I didn't want to upset anyone! It's sad that they're dead, but they were old and had lived a lovely and long life together, and neither of them had to go on alone. [hugs] It's the way I hope we'll be.

UH. Crap. My laptop's almost 5 and i do backup everyday because of the dissertation but still...

I knoooow. I said I was having a stupidly emotional day. My old room reminds me too much of my cat and I miss him. And after dealing with the whole knife drama, I've lost another few hours to work on the dissertation and it's stressing me out.

It's not surprising you're easily upset. And hey, I can get misty-eyed thinking about previous cats and how much I loved them.

There's something about the 5 year mark with computers, I got a new one a few months ago because my old one was starting to hiccup at odd times and making me nervous.

The otter story is absolutely adorable, even if there's some sad involved--we should all be lucky enough to go that way after a long happy life.

I agree. I love that photo of one lying on top of the other. Their keeper cried on seeing them though, and I understand that. I was a wreck when I've had a cat die.

Do you know the amazing story of Jin the otter who escaped here and went on a huge trek before being captured? I made three posts:
Lost otter (http://vilakins.livejournal.com/199818.html)
Jin comes back (http://vilakins.livejournal.com/204043.html)
Interview with Jin (http://vilakins.livejournal.com/208122.html) (funny article I quote)

The interview with Jin is hilarious. It never occurred to me that there were no native otters in NZ.

I didn't even know there were otters in zoos till Jin escaped!

It's really a pity the other articles I used to link to about Jin disappeared. She went an amazing distance in the sea, esp for a freshwater otter, visiting several islands, and survived a month on her own. She's now down in Christchurch, swapped with another zoo for breeding purposes, and she and her mate have a lovely (and secure) area. :-)

Sorry to hear about the PC problems. I had a power cut last night too, so it looks like it was across the city. :(

Am going to watch 'Life of Brian' too this weekend. :-p

How sad/bittersweet about the otters...

Huh. When I rang the Vector faults number, it just mentioned Glendowie being out, so we thought the glitches were because of their outage. Or did you just have those two brief ones like we did?

I can't get the song out of my head! I also watched the YouTube vid of B7 set to it. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7OHzKjLKKY8&feature=PlayList&p=DB7F7C6A4EC56E37&playnext_from=PL&index=0) :-D

I think it was the happiest ending their story could have had. :-) They had a lovely life together.

It wasn't a big power outage - one of the power switch thingys 'popped' out and half the lights went out. Easily fixed, but more annoying than serious.

Will have to watch the vid...

Oh, my god, that's the sweetest story of the otters! Of course, I cried, but sort of in happiness, too.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-04-03 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's an ultimately happy story. :-)

I would be scared if something happened with my PC - fortunately I have my son Jirka here, but still...So I hope all will work for you again.
What a lovely picture and a touching story - even most of human couples are not so...linked to follow each other over the hills...
Like Filemon and Baucis.:-)

I worry about all the tech in the house; I'm very much not a hardware person. Software was my thing; I just expect the hardware to work. :-P

Animals love as deeply as we do, I'm sure. I've known some very devoted pets including a kitten who used to cuddle up to her dying human's head to keep him warm, and who went under his bed and stayed there for a week, mourning him, when he died.

Aww, poor keeper! But good that they went together. Otters are great. When there was snow here, we were finding otter slides.

We have a series called The Zoo here which is the right sort of reality TV: it follows the keepers and animals at Auckland Zoo. They do love their animals dearly and I've seen quite a few tears on the show.

Have you seen the local otters? The only place we can see them is in zoos. Are yours freshwater or sea? I love our icon.
