Haiti auction items

Good news, everybody! [/Professor Farnsworth] I seem to have formatting and icons back on LJ! At least, they've been here for a few hours, so I'm optimistic that they're staying. :-D

Since I finally finished the last of my [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti commissions, I can post about them.

I raised US$85 (thanks to some kind bidders paying more than they actually bid) with the following (click to see full-size):

This necklace and earring set (the ones on the left)

These ninja mitts, at least ones in the same yarn

This scarf, knit to order

And this pic of blind Avon and seeing-eye wolf (for [livejournal.com profile] kalinda001, since many of you will have recognised the theme). :-)

I'd have bid for some items myself if I had a job, though the custom plushies would have been way out of range.

Oh, all of these are fantastic. I especially love that scarf. A manly pattern AND colors (apologies if the bidder is female!), which are combos you so rarely see.

Avon looks awesome too. I love the shading.

Thank you!

The scarf is for a woman. I love that pattern and have made it several times now, and offered it with the bidder's choice of colours. She wanted autumn ones, and I gave her a choice of a couple of yarns I found. I'm tempted to make it again for me.

I'd make you one in colours you'd like, but I doubt you'd ever get to wear a scarf.

Other scarves I've made that are OK for guys are:
- This one (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3582/3507265314_eea5632f94.jpg) and this one (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3593/3533429176_f662a79dc9.jpg) for Greg
- This one (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3341/3506457479_9553082e5b.jpg) (same pattern as the Haiti one) for me
- Maybe this wove-look one (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2744/4145827137_a44aabc8e8.jpg)?

I've always preferred unfeminine or androgynous styles myself.

I love all the scarfs, but I think the one the bigger one appeals to me because of the color palette. The zigzag pattern is much more noticable on it, etc. It actually does get cold enough here in winter to wear coats/scarves/hats/gloves, etc. It's supposed to get down to 38F tonight, which is certainly cold enough!

I just suspect the price of mailing a scarf from New Zealand to the US is cost prohibitive. I should just learn how to do it myself! XD

It turned out to be about $11 or so to post. It's actually a very easy pattern: all garter stitch with an increase and knitting two stitches together on each short row. Yeah, the pattern looked really good in that yarn.

38F? That's 3C! That's colder than it gets here normally! Hey, I'll make you a scarf like that if you pay for the yarn and the airmail, total = $35! BTW the brown is lighter than it looks in the photo; it's dark chocolate rather than the black it seems to be. The yarn I used is on this page (http://www.cleckheaton.biz/Colour_range.asp?YarnID=26), #14 (mouse over the smaller pics), but it's a bit lighter than it looks there. I rather fancy trying some of the others, like #06.

I already made you something silly (and non-wearable) with leftover yarn; I must get round to posting it.

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 10:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's near freezing! It sometimes even drops cold enough to snow, though that's really rare and doesn't usually last long. But it is DEFINITELY cold enough for a scarf, especially at night.

If I had $35 I very well might take you up on that offer. I am so seriously broke right now I couldn't do it. Which is stupid since by the time I have money, it'll be too warm!

I think the colors in the scarf look very 70s too, so that's probably also why it appeals to me so much. Look forward tos eeing the silly thing you made. I really need to learn to knit more!!! Though I'm not sure how much my wrist could take it.

They're gorgeous colours: cream, caramel, toffee, and chocolate! (Like this icon!) But I know what you mean about the money. If I had some, I'd have bid on some things.

Maybe if either of us has a job, I'll make you one for next winter. :-)

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, and brown is my favorite color, so the mixture of them all is very appealing to me. I especially love the contrast that the cream gives it all.

Maybe someday I'll get back into my clay creations and we can do a trade, even.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
YES! I'd totally go for a trade!

If I thought I'd sell them on Etsy, I'd make more of those scarves in that yarn in different colours, as it turned out so well.

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I think a trade would be the most fun, too. :)

Why not try to sell one on Etsy? It's super easy to set up an account and although it does cost to list, it's like less than a dollar to list a few things so not a huge loss if nothing sells. And if something does sell, then money!

I might give it a go. I love knitting for the relaxation and pleasure of making things, but there are only so many items I can wear. I imagine scarves and mitts (and jewellery) would be best as they fit anyone.
