Haiti auction items

Good news, everybody! [/Professor Farnsworth] I seem to have formatting and icons back on LJ! At least, they've been here for a few hours, so I'm optimistic that they're staying. :-D

Since I finally finished the last of my [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti commissions, I can post about them.

I raised US$85 (thanks to some kind bidders paying more than they actually bid) with the following (click to see full-size):

This necklace and earring set (the ones on the left)

These ninja mitts, at least ones in the same yarn

This scarf, knit to order

And this pic of blind Avon and seeing-eye wolf (for [livejournal.com profile] kalinda001, since many of you will have recognised the theme). :-)

I'd have bid for some items myself if I had a job, though the custom plushies would have been way out of range.

Nice stuff.

Glad LJ is back in NZ, it's simpler.

Glad things are working again. Beautiful picture!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks!

[identity profile] azdak.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
You make absolutely beautiful stuff. Quite breathtaking.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, thank you! :-D

[identity profile] sallymn.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 07:49 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, they're lovely... and welcome back!!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 09:08 am (UTC)(link)
I'm delighted to be back! I could read posts, but comments were hard because they weren't indented by thread.

[identity profile] kalinda001.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 08:10 am (UTC)(link)
Those are very beautiful!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 09:08 am (UTC)(link)
Oh look, you're using the icon already! :-D

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 09:01 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, all of these are fantastic. I especially love that scarf. A manly pattern AND colors (apologies if the bidder is female!), which are combos you so rarely see.

Avon looks awesome too. I love the shading.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 09:17 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you!

The scarf is for a woman. I love that pattern and have made it several times now, and offered it with the bidder's choice of colours. She wanted autumn ones, and I gave her a choice of a couple of yarns I found. I'm tempted to make it again for me.

I'd make you one in colours you'd like, but I doubt you'd ever get to wear a scarf.

Other scarves I've made that are OK for guys are:
- This one (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3582/3507265314_eea5632f94.jpg) and this one (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3593/3533429176_f662a79dc9.jpg) for Greg
- This one (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3341/3506457479_9553082e5b.jpg) (same pattern as the Haiti one) for me
- Maybe this wove-look one (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2744/4145827137_a44aabc8e8.jpg)?

I've always preferred unfeminine or androgynous styles myself.

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 09:45 am (UTC)(link)
I love all the scarfs, but I think the one the bigger one appeals to me because of the color palette. The zigzag pattern is much more noticable on it, etc. It actually does get cold enough here in winter to wear coats/scarves/hats/gloves, etc. It's supposed to get down to 38F tonight, which is certainly cold enough!

I just suspect the price of mailing a scarf from New Zealand to the US is cost prohibitive. I should just learn how to do it myself! XD

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 10:07 am (UTC)(link)
It turned out to be about $11 or so to post. It's actually a very easy pattern: all garter stitch with an increase and knitting two stitches together on each short row. Yeah, the pattern looked really good in that yarn.

38F? That's 3C! That's colder than it gets here normally! Hey, I'll make you a scarf like that if you pay for the yarn and the airmail, total = $35! BTW the brown is lighter than it looks in the photo; it's dark chocolate rather than the black it seems to be. The yarn I used is on this page (http://www.cleckheaton.biz/Colour_range.asp?YarnID=26), #14 (mouse over the smaller pics), but it's a bit lighter than it looks there. I rather fancy trying some of the others, like #06.

I already made you something silly (and non-wearable) with leftover yarn; I must get round to posting it.

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 10:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's near freezing! It sometimes even drops cold enough to snow, though that's really rare and doesn't usually last long. But it is DEFINITELY cold enough for a scarf, especially at night.

If I had $35 I very well might take you up on that offer. I am so seriously broke right now I couldn't do it. Which is stupid since by the time I have money, it'll be too warm!

I think the colors in the scarf look very 70s too, so that's probably also why it appeals to me so much. Look forward tos eeing the silly thing you made. I really need to learn to knit more!!! Though I'm not sure how much my wrist could take it.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 10:45 am (UTC)(link)
They're gorgeous colours: cream, caramel, toffee, and chocolate! (Like this icon!) But I know what you mean about the money. If I had some, I'd have bid on some things.

Maybe if either of us has a job, I'll make you one for next winter. :-)

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, and brown is my favorite color, so the mixture of them all is very appealing to me. I especially love the contrast that the cream gives it all.

Maybe someday I'll get back into my clay creations and we can do a trade, even.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
YES! I'd totally go for a trade!

If I thought I'd sell them on Etsy, I'd make more of those scarves in that yarn in different colours, as it turned out so well.

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I think a trade would be the most fun, too. :)

Why not try to sell one on Etsy? It's super easy to set up an account and although it does cost to list, it's like less than a dollar to list a few things so not a huge loss if nothing sells. And if something does sell, then money!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I might give it a go. I love knitting for the relaxation and pleasure of making things, but there are only so many items I can wear. I imagine scarves and mitts (and jewellery) would be best as they fit anyone.

Good to see you back :)

That scarf is funky, I love it!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 09:18 am (UTC)(link)
It's good to be back!

I love the way it turned out too. :-)

[identity profile] emerald-happy.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 09:45 am (UTC)(link)
Oh they're gorgeous. I love the Avon and the wolf pic. And it's so good to have you back on lj.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 10:09 am (UTC)(link)
I'm delighted to be back!

I'm quite pleased at how it came out, rather like oil paint. :-)

[identity profile] emerald-happy.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! The wolf's fur in particular is something awesome :-)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I was going for soft, but when I got the oily effect, I thought I'd stick with it.

[identity profile] viciousdisorder.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 09:53 am (UTC)(link)
Welcome back, hope the issue has been resolved and stays that way. I'm trying to work out the pattern for the scarf. Is it basically k1p1 with just changing the colours throughout?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 10:13 am (UTC)(link)
The scarf pattern is dead easy: all garter stitch with an increase and knitting two stitches (SSK) each end of a short row (and knitting back the other way). The yarn is one that changes colour itself, so the effect depends on the yarn you choose. This is the pattern here (http://douma.net/Karen/knitting/Accessory-Scarves/Multidirectional_Diagonal_Scarf.htm): really so simple and you don't even have to count stitches as you can tell when to to the SSK. I use the alternate ending.

[personal profile] kerravonsen 2010-02-08 10:09 am (UTC)(link)
Lovely. That scarf is a really interesting pattern.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 10:17 am (UTC)(link)
It's a very simple pattern (garter stitch short rows); the effect is provided by a yarn that changes colour. Here are three others I've made in that pattern:
- self-striping (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3603/3377303030_5f01b0c723.jpg)
- much more subtle changes (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3341/3506457479_9553082e5b.jpg)
- slow but big changes, and flamey-looking (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3303/3550930874_ed3f84db00.jpg)

Glad to be back! And thank you. :-)

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! Glad to have you back! And your stuff is all terrific!

I haven't even started on my [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti fic, what with being sick, and I'm not going to have hardly any chance to work on it in the near future, either. :( But fortunately my recipient is very understanding.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you!

All I have hanging over me now is some scanning. I keep intending to scan in and iconise those Star Trek calendars, and also a guy on the Lyst who can't spell or work out how to use the past tense wants the old B7 videotape covers scanned. Sigh. As Greg pointed out, that's self-inflicted.

The coloring on your knits is just gorgeous, love the picture too. And hooray your lj formatting is back!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! The yarns worked well for those patterns.

Yes, yay for being able to read comment threads again!

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, you made some AMAZING stuff. The bidders will all be thrilled, I'm sure.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I hope so! The scarf is on its way, and I sent the jewellery a while back and I haven't heard anything from the bidder in the US. The mitts went at the same time and got there about a week ago. :-P

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
The bidder may not realize that you'd like to know it arrived safely. Now that I FINALLY got my sewing room put in order, I can sift through the Christmas stuff & then I can try to do some sewing for helphaiti.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
I emailed them and asked them. :-(

I bet you'd raise a lot for fannish bears or plushies! All of those offers got lots of bids.

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
It takes too long to make one of costumed & jointed bears (about a month), but I will try for scrap bears, once I get going. Mmmm... I had an idea, but I don't know if I have the energy to figure it out. I was thinking it would be cool to make little bears in the colors of the Haitian flag, but the center of the flag is quite ornate.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
You could offer small fannish plushies made of socks or some stretchy material. They were much in demand and don't need joints, just fun costumes and the right hair and a standard face, I've noticed, to be recognisable. I'm going to teach myself how to do amurigumi (sp?) so I can crochet fannish dolls, or maybe I'll knit them. That won't be for a while though.

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I suspect I'll make whatever is quickest & likely to appeal from amongst my ton'a stuff, just to use something up.

Amigurumi is one of the things I looked up on the net a while back & downloaded some free patterns/instructions. SO cute! I haven't tried it yet. I think for tiny toys crochet is better than knitting because of the added stiffness of the 'fabric.'

[identity profile] linda-joyce.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Good to see you back.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
It's good to be back! :-D

[identity profile] luinielle.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Welcome back. :o) Your auction items are amazing! I especially love the mitts and the necklace is gorgeous.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly that yarn has been discontinued and I'm now out of it. There are some nice self-striping yarns around though if you fancy a pair. I'm thinking of using some leftovers to do some funky stripy ones too.

[identity profile] daiseechain.livejournal.com 2010-02-08 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Lovely work, all of it!

I especially love the gauntlets and the picture. You do some beautiful artwork. Love the dog's hair and the little wrinkles and folds in Avon's jacket, and also the shadows and highlights on his face.

Good to hear you're able to be back on again and that at least lj mostly seems to be working for you. I don't know what the hell they've been playing at but I was actually in tears of frustration over trying to put a post up on Friday :-(

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you!

It's a wolf, from Kal's fanfic. I'm quite pleased with that picture; it looks a little like oil paint but for the rendered clouds in the background. :-)

As for the mitts, I'm happy to make them for people if they pay for yarn; they're easy and I can post them in stiff envelopes. That particular yarn however is discontinued and I don't have any left now.

You had problems in the UK? They all seemed to be here with a few in Australia, Singapore, and Indonesia.

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh glad you are back and the artwork is great.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks to both! :-)
