RIP hard drive

My computer has finally karked it. I knew the hard drive was on its way out, but it went overnight. I'll have a new HD very soon, I hope, but in the meantime I can use Greg's PC with its unfamiliar keyboard (with "delete" and "end" etc in all the wrong places) and no Firefox. And none of my bookmarks. At least mine was all backed up.

How annoying! At least it was all backed up - it's terrible when it dies unexpectedly and it isn't. Yes, this has happened to me.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
So far I've been lucky. But I'm bereft without my bookmarks, or my non-Gail email. :-( I hope I have my machine back soon.

crap! Yay for backups. After it happened to two friends I have everything insanely backed up. In fact you've just reminded me I'm going to go do that again now.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Ours get automatically backed up each night, which is a relief.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2010-01-25 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Bah! But very sensible of you, making sure of your backups. Come to think of it, I need to do that again soon, myself.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
We have a home network and backup every night, so that's one good thing. Sigh. I didn't need this.

Have you tried the freezer trick? It does actually work - well at least some of the time... it did work for me. This is of course assuming it's something you can get access to...

Although it might be worth waiting until you have the new hard drive so you can just move everything across.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Freezer trick? I was getting disk errors so I knew it was only a matter of time.

[identity profile] viciousdisorder.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
If the harddisk fails (due to the head being unaligned), and you want to get something off it you wrap it in a well sealed plastic bag and put it in the freezer for a while and then you take it out, and have a little longer to get things off it.
http://www.datarecoverypros.com/hard-drive-recovery-freeze.html explains it a bit better.

Although you have all your stuff backed up so hopefully you shouldn't end up needing this trick. Hope you get your own computer back (with new hard disk) soon.

Huh! Greg actually knew about that and once used it, but we were OK since we had the backup. :-)

[identity profile] glitterboy1.livejournal.com 2010-01-25 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Bah. I'm glad you have backups, though - when I saw the subject, I got worried!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I'm still worried, and will be till I get everything back. I miss it.

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2010-01-25 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Am sorry to hear that. :(

I know my computer is getting a bit 'elderly' these days..

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Mine is too, still running pre-Vista windows. I did know the HD was unwell, but this was still a bit sudden. :-(

[identity profile] snowgrouse.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Neep. Glad you had it all backed up, though. *hugs*

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I just hope it doesn't take too long to get it all up and running again. I miss it. I miss all sorts of things like Firefox and Adblock.

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yikes!
Hope you don't have to wait too long to get your own "baby" back.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Me too. It's hard "camping out" on someone else's.

[identity profile] kalinda001.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Thank goodness for backups ;) And good you have a new one on its way and a temporary PC to use.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's better than nothing, but I'm missing all my stuff. :-( I hope eveything else is OK and a new HD will fix it.

[identity profile] executrix.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
It only takes a moment to download Firefox, though, and if Greg prefers a different browser, you just set up the other as the default browser and Firefox as the non-default.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
That's what we have on the laptop we take on holiday (and I must make sure we have the latest version before we go away). However I'll only bother downloading if we don't get the new disk installed tonight. I'll also have to get the UK English version of Firefox, which wasn't that easy to find last time IIRC.

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
You are most clever! You are still here! :-)
Hope you will have a new HD in no time!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-27 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I do! Well, a used one that Greg had because he bought a bigger one for himself.
