TV series meme

Today it's a TV meme. There are several versions of this around; this one's from [livejournal.com profile] mraltariel and [livejournal.com profile] communicator, I think.

Name a TV series in which you have seen every episode at least twice:
You know, I can't think of any. I own a lot of series I've seen all of, but I haven't rewatched any of them in their entirety again, instead tending to dip in and watch my favourite eps. I'm just not that organised.
Wait. After filling in another question, I realise there is one: From the Earth to the Moon.

Name a (current) show you can't miss:
Lost. I know a lot of people gave up on it during the really slow and boring bit (and Jack is still boring), but I really want to know what's happening / has happened, and they pack a lot into each ep these days. It was worth sticking with it through the bad patch (though I mainly did because it's Greg's big fandom). It's back on in a week or so.

Name an actor that would make you more inclined to watch a show:
Ian Richardson. Diana Rigg.

Name an actor who would make you less likely to watch a show:
James Nesbitt. Also Marc Warren, though I didn't actually mind him in that Doctor Who story Love and Monsters. He annoyed me a lot as Danny in Hustle, but I loved the series anyway.

Name a show you can, and do, quote from:
Blake's 7. "I have a weak chest"  and "That makes it all worthwhile" among many others.

Name a show you like that no one else enjoys:
Glee, it seems.

Name a TV show which you've been known to sing the theme song:
Lots! Red Dwarf, Blackadder, and even themes that don't have lyrics like those of Farscape and Jeeves and Wooster.

Name a show you would recommend everyone to watch:
From the Earth to the Moon. It's a series of dramas about the Apollo missions. Each episode covered a different mission or aspect, and had a completely different feel with different writers and directors. It's wonderful, and I think would please most of you.

Name a TV series you own:
Lots! Blake's 7, Red Dwarf, Blackadder, Black Books, Farscape, Babylon 5, and the list goes on and on. I have so many I'm not sure when I'll get round to watching them.

What is your favourite episode of your favourite series?
I'm not sure I have a favourite series. I know I mostly write for Blake's 7, but feeling the need to write fanfic is a subset of loving a series. There are ones like A Peculiar Practice, The Beiderbecke Affair (and its sequels), and Jeeves and Wooster which were the bright, shining spots in my week.

A show you mean to watch, but you just haven't got around to yet:
West Wing. I have the first season, so I have no excuse except time. Also Buffy, which I've only seen a couple of seasons of so far.

Ever quit watching a show because it was so bad?
Oh yes. Andromeda, Enterprise, Torchwood, BSG, Heroes...

Name a show you aren't interested in watching, not in the least:
Dexter, most police series, all reality and talk shows.

Name a show that's made you cry multiple times:
Babylon 5 and Farscape made me cry at least once anyway.

Oldest TV show you like?
The Avengers, I think. I first saw Doctor Who in the Fourth Doctor's era, and I think The Avengers came first. Emma Peel rocks. I own the B&W eps, but I need to get hold of the rest.

Newest TV show you like?
I think that's Glee. We seem fairly up-to-date with that here and we're actually watching that free-to-air.

What do you eat when you watch TV?
My dinner at the start.

How often do you watch TV?
If you're including DVDs and stuff recorded on the TiVo or Sky Box, every night.

Do you have a favourite talk show?
No. I don't watch them.

What's the last TV show you watched?
NCS. After I asked for some recs, we decided to try this. We're in season 1 and so far so good, except for the autopsies. I'd like a lot more Abby and Ducky though.

What's your favourite/preferred genre of TV?
Comedy or comedy-drama.

What's your least favourite genre of TV?
Horror, reality and talk shows.

What was the first TV show you were obsessed with?
I was very involved with Babylon 5 when it was shown here, and that got me on line and into discussion groups and meeting other fans (once in RL), reading JMS's comments etc.

What TV show do you wish you never watched?
None, because I either stopped when I didn't like what I saw, or enjoyed the show up to the point at which it jumped the shark for me.

What's the weirdest show you enjoyed?
Telegoons, I think it was called. It was a televised version of The Goon Show (an ancient British radio series) which I saw when I was about 8 or 9 (I remember having to fight for that channel when my sister wanted to see a western at the same time) and the scene that sticks is them trapping the entire Japanese Army up a tree, then digging up the tree and taking it away on a truck. I've seen other weird ones since like Ren and Stimpy, but that one has to be the weirdest. I believe it failed because it was so hard to translate the insane anarchy of the Goons to a visual medium, but I wonder if they did the episode in which the British towed Britain out into the Atlantic and left a life-sized cardboard replica in its place for the Germans to bomb.

What TV show scared you the most?
Probably Doctor Who. Yeah, along with every other kid. I was actually a lot more scared by some of the books I read because my imagination was worse than what they put on screen in those days.

What is the funniest TV show you have ever watched?
I'm hopeless at picking favourites of any sort, except maybe characters. Porridge, Blackadder, Black Books? I remember one sketch from Alas Smith and Jones (Mel Smith and Griff Rhys Jones) made me laugh so much I was in helpless pain.

Which do you think is the best TV series ever made?
Once again, I can't answer that. I like different series for different reasons.

I think I might have to do this.

I'm still slogging my way through Lost, averaging three episodes a day. I'm at the tail end of series 3 now, and finally into episodes I've not yet seen

I sing the theme to Red Dwarf all the time

[identity profile] snowgrouse.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'm glad someone else dislikes Marc Warren. The boy is a decent enough actor, but man, I just get squicked out having to watch someone who looks like he's constantly sneering and about to spit in my face. It works when he's playing someone slimy and creepy and when you are *supposed* to hope he will get his arse kicked. (Like S2E1 of LoM, for instance). And I was just thinking today how much I hated Love & Monsters and how I'll take oldskool send-ups (like bits of the Time Monster) over it any day...

And I so need an Emma Peel icon. *happysigh*

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
I totally need an Ella Peel icon! Parker is the closest I get (I bet she was based on Emma).

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
(I bet she was based on Emma).

I believe the writers have specifically said that her wardrobe, at least, was.

I thought Warren was fantastic playing a creep in State of Play, but he was so annoying in Hustle it stopped me following the series (despite the considerable incentive of Adrian Lester). Didn't like his episodes of Doctor Who and Life on Mars either; the latter disproved my theory that he's fine when you aren't supposed to like him.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
He left Hustle at the end of season 4 (S4 was awful because he became the boss---WHY?) so you could easily watch after that, plus Adrian Lester came back in season 5! It's easy enough to pick up anywhere as there's really no arc at all. There's a new pair (brother and sister) in season 4 but we've always kept the lovely Ash, Albert, and Eddie. :-)

I must get start watching the current season (6).

I like Glee :) I have last night's episode waiting in the Tivo.

(ooo, can I sneak this in before the downtime?)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yay, another fan! We have too, because we went out last night.

Just wanted to let you know, our Glee season pass wasn't going to record next week's episode because it thought it was a repeat. It must have been flagged that way in the programme guide, and I have it set to only record first run episodes. I have corrected our settings, but thought you might want to know so that you can check yours :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-24 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks, I'll check.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-28 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
BTW we checked and our TiVo was fine. We must have it set for first time only because it doesn't get the repeats.

Good to know. I wonder if they flagged it incorrectly and then corrected it later.

I did have a missing episode earlier in the season, and had been wondering if it might have been something like that. Fortunately, we were still recording that timeslot on the PDR at that stage, so I didn't miss it completely.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-28 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
How odd. I don't think we've missed any. However TiVos can be annoying and just delete things sometimes. I found that with the old ones we had.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
and even themes that don't have lyrics like those of Farscape

Nice to know I'm not the only one that does that. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
[grins] Some themes I just can't resist.

[identity profile] kalypso-v.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 02:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I like to sing the Brunnen-G war song, which is part of the Lexx theme music - and does have lyrics, of course, but even the show-writers didn't seem to know them, since they called the final episode "Yo Way Yo" when it's perfectly obvious the first word starts with a V.

I can even do the Irish pub version from the episode in Newfoundland.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. I can sing that, too, but I always heard it starting with a "y"."

I can also sing the theme song to Alien Nation, which is also in a made-up alien language.

[ETA: Possibly I should amend that to "sing," in quotes, because I can barely carry a tune, really. But I do know the words. :)]

I can even do the Irish pub version from the episode in Newfoundland.

OK, that is pretty awesome. :)

ytg (that's a message from Tabitha) gvv (she's very keen to type something this evening)

When I decided to learn it, I went in search of the lyrics, which I found loveingly transcribed in various (http://www.lexxdomain.com/brunneng.php) places (http://everything2.com/title/Brunnen-G+Fight+Song); the spellings vary, but the jist of them seems to be the same. There's a V-sound just before the slide into Y (which always sounds to me like the Russian letter E).

I wonder how many of us can sing in alien languages? There must be plenty who can sing in Klingon.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Greetings, Tabitha! :)

In my head, I was hearing only an extended "y" sound, "Yyyyyyyo," which is equivalent to an "e": "Eeeeeeyo," but I just played it -- yes, I have the soundtracks -- and damned if I can't hear that very faint "v" in there now.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
(By the way, apparently the soundtrack spells it "Yo-A-O," for whatever that may be worth.)

[identity profile] kalinda001.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 07:34 am (UTC)(link)
I love Glee!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 10:34 am (UTC)(link)
Another one! :-D

I just finished watching it. Two more to go on TV here.

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 10:54 am (UTC)(link)
I can remember The Telegoons from about 1963, though I can't actually remember any of the plots - but then the plots weren't really the point. For some reason, one exchange of dialogue has stuck in my mind: "What's the weather like, Min?" Min pulls back a curtain and looks out of the window. "I can't see, Henry, for all this snow." Which would have been appropriate here a couple of weeks ago.

You gave up on Torchwood after the first series, didn't you? I thought that Series 2 was a great improvement. Maybe you should give up on more series, for the benefit of the rest of us. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 10:57 am (UTC)(link)
I gave up early in S1 when it became apparent the series was horror rather than SF.

Oh, you think the others improved too?

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 11:11 am (UTC)(link)
I think that
[Error: Irreparable invalid markup ('<i<enterprise</i>') in entry. Owner must fix manually. Raw contents below.]

I think that <i<Enterprise</i> probably did, though it's hard to be sure as I've often seen episodes out of chronological order and there are many episodes that I haven't seen at all. I think that it was the third series out of four that had such a strong overarching story arc that it was almost a serial rather than a series, and I thought that what I saw of that (most of it, and luckily in the right order) was pretty good. I've never watched any of the other shows that you mentioned in your answer.

If you gave up on <i>Torchwood</i> because it was horror rather than because the first series was pretty dire, then my joke doesn't really work.

[identity profile] pet-lunatic.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 11:36 am (UTC)(link)
I don't like Marc Warren either, mainly because of his appearance in that appalling version of Dracula ITV did a few years ago.

Goons! <3

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't see that. But then, I never heard of it till now. I think it would have to have an amazing cast or some other special feature to attract me anyway when I know the story so well.

Is that your new default icon? I like it!

[identity profile] pet-lunatic.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I watched it because it had David Suchet as van Helsing, but unfortunately I thought it sucked :/

It is! Thank you :)

[identity profile] bigdamnxenafan.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay for mention of Diana Rigg! I do so love her. The Avengers was my very first fandom. When I was four years old I wanted so badly to be like Emma Peel. I even affected a british accent.

I don't know how I missed that you are an Avengers fan. That little tidbit made my day.

I admit I did give up on LOST. However, I've being doing a re-watch. I'm almost done with Season 1. I enjoyed Season 1 the first time through and I'm enjoying it even more the second time through. Hurley is my hero.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I really need an Emma icon. I wanted to be like her too. I adored everything she did except for being called "Mrs" which was so strangely fuddy-duddy. She will never date; she had a style all of her own.

If you've already seen S2 and S3 of Lost, you could skim them (and completely miss out Jack Gets A Tat as it adds nothing and is as boring as Jack himself). The plot really ramps up after S3 when they start to do different things and answer some mysteries while giving you a lot more intriguing things to think about. I don't know what Greg's going to do when it's finished.

I love Hurley.

[identity profile] bigdamnxenafan.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
The Mrs was a bit fuddy-duddy. Diana Rigg wasn't too keen on it either. I once saw an interview in which she mentioned that TPTB insisted on the 'Mrs' so people would know Emma had been around the block a few times. Ridiculous in my opinion.

I dropped out of LOST midway through season 2, but I might skim the episodes I've alread seen. Really, I can't imagine Jack as anything other than boring. The current season is the last, correct?

Love Hurley and I love your Hurley icon. Dude! That's awesome!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
How silly, when a single person would appear to be more the 60s swinger.

I'd definitely skim the Lost eps you've seen if you know what's happening. It's season 4 that ramps up; the writers' strike made them really pack it into a shortened season of 0nly 14 eps. S5 continued to be awesome, and I can't wait for S6.

Yep, season 6, the coming one, is the last. It starts next month. :-)

[identity profile] daiseechain.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"Eeeee's fallen in the water!"

:-D Goons!! Love em. Knew there was a film, didn't know about the tv show. Sounds like a prototype for Monty Python or The Goodies.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-24 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
"Nyi-hey!" As far as I know, they made some of the scripts into episodes. The one I particularly remember was a radio ep.

A friend and I at uni used to stay up late to listen to the Goons, and we taked our own scripts. I could do Hanry, Min, Bluebottle and some other like little Jim (the fallen in the water guy) and she was very good at Eccles.

"Enter Bluebottle, playboy of the Est Finchley Tube Station. Waits for applause. Not a sausage."

BTW I wrote a B7/Goon pastiche (http://community.livejournal.com/b7friday/319363.html) once, but I see you've read it. :-D

[identity profile] luinielle.livejournal.com 2010-01-28 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Another fun meme!

Both Craig and I enjoyed 'From the Earth to the Moon', although I think he enjoyed it much more than I did.

I gave up on 'Lost' halfway through the first season, but only because I missed an episode here and there and never quite managed to get caught up enough to know what was happening on the show. It's been in our Netflix queue for awhile so I will probably get reaquainted with it one of these days.

What didn't you enjoy about 'Heroes'? Just wondering as it seems to be fairly popular and the series has also been in my Netflix queue to eventually watch.

First season of 'West Wing' was absolutely the best. :o)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-28 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked a lot of the characters, but I found I was putting off watching because of Sylar and the Latino siblings. I prefer SF to horror, and my beloved Hiro was not quite enough. Maybe I'll give it another go if Greg will.
