Cool things

I've finally convinced Greg to go to Avatar with me tonight. We can't see it in 3D as he's as one-eyed as Travis and Stark, but we've booked the luxury seats where waiters bring your food and drinks and coffee. :-D I'd love to see it in 3D though.

I've also booked our holiday, squeezed in between Greg's work commitments and my web design course. We didn't get one last year, so yay!

And while I'm here, have a cool link: The Invisible Man. This guy paints himself to match his background. It's quite an eerie effect.

Avatar...I'll be waiting to see your reaction to it. I won't say anything until then ;)

A web design coursem, that sounds good. I've been considering doing some upgrade courses too.

Rats, I keep getting a "Error 500 - Internal server error" when I try to access that link.

Huh. I just tested it and it works fine, even when refreshed. Perhaps its your route to it?

I have no idea if this course will help me find work, but maybe I could do some freelance stuff. Who knows? I'd come cheaper than most, I'm so desperate.

[identity profile] kalinda001.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
I tried the link again and now it's fine for me too now. Bleah. That is just...odd? The Invisible Man that is.

Freelance stuff is an idea. Here's hoping it works out.

I've seen Avatar in 3D but for some reason the "effect" only worked intermittently for me. However it didn't stop it being a great movie!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Some people here said that sometimes things looked as if they were at the wrong distance, but others have raved about how good it was. Perhaps it depends on the cinema.

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
It seems to depend on the person too. My daughter, who was sitting next to me, was thoroughly absorbed and saw 3D through out, she was moving around and "dodging" things that weren't there.
It was great when it did work though!

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 10:02 am (UTC)(link)
The effect worked for me throughout the film. The only previous 3D film I had seen was Beowulf, but that only seemed to use 3D very sparingly, unlike Avatar which used it throughout.

Vilakins, I hope that you enjoy the film as much as I did. Good news about your holiday. I hope you have a great time.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 10:50 am (UTC)(link)
I thoroughly enjoyed it: beauty, action, and sheer entertainment. I'll post about it tomorrow. :-)

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Look forward to your thoughts on Avatar. I bet it's still enjoyable 3D but I'd be interested in your comparison if you later see it again in 3D. It might be a bit violent for you but I think you'll overall enjoy it.

Where are you going on holiday? :D

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
I've heard it's not too bad for violence, and I've seen a lot of action films. It's gore I don't like.

I wanted to go up north to the Bay of Islands, but I couldn't find two weeks' accommodation there in the time we had available unless we waited till April, so it's Lake Taupo, which is also very beautiful.

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, yeah, it seems very low on actual gore, though there is a lot of death. It's just not a particularly bloody movie, so that's good. When do you go see it?

Mmm I seem to recall you mentioning Lake Taupo once. Two weeks at a lake sounds very nice, either way.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Tonight!

It's a huge lake, really a volcanic crater, and site of one of the biggest eruptions ever. I just hope there isn't one in my lifetime--or my holiday. :-P Lovely place though with a lot of fun things to do and see. I was there two years ago.

Ooh, a web design course? That sounds like just your sort of thing!

I hope you enjoy the film :) Thanks for the invisible man link - some very clever images there.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
It's something I know I'd be good at, but whether I can find work doing it is another matter. I probably need a portfolio of sites or something, what with always having to have experience in this country. I'll see.

It's pretty amazing, the time and effort he puts into those images.

I'd also like to see the Holmes film, but motivating Greg to go to a cinema is always difficult.

[identity profile] luinielle.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
Have fun at the movie! I hope you enjoy it. I'm a bit ambivalent about seeing it.

Thanks for the Invisible Man link - clever and a bit spooky.

I hope you have a wonderful time on your vacation! And good luck with your web design course.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
I swayed Greg by quoting reviews from my flist. I also want to see the Holmes film, but I'll have to work on him or go with a friend.

The course is in March, and we're going on holiday for the second half of February. :-)

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the link- that guy is really amazing. I followed it to another pic of him where they had to tell me where he was in it.

I hope you enjoy Avatar & your holiday.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
[clicks on links] You mean the one with the earth mover? I did spot him, but that was a good one.

The holiday's a month away.

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, the bulldozer. If I ever do go to see Avatar I'd better remember to bring my glasses. :^)

A month's not that long, you can anticipate and make plans for everything you want to do.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
Only if you're not seeing it 3D. If you want to see that, you need their black polarising glasses, not the old red/green ones.

We just play it by ear, but w00t, we found out that Art Deco weekend's on in Napier while we're in good riving distance. :-D

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, glasses...mmm... I think I have some sealed unused contact lenses. Without some vision correction I won't be able to see the screen. :^)

OOh, Art Deco! I do hope you get to see that!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
The place fills up with people dressed in Deco style, and there are vintage cars and lots of events. I have no idea what I'd wear, not owning any dresses. Maybe I could go in drag. At least I have the hairstyle.

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
I have a vague idea some women wore trousers in Art Deco illos... Yes! Late Art Deco women did wear trousers.

This is a vintage outfit that might give you ideas.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 10:37 am (UTC)(link)
Greg's not keen on dressing up anyway, but if I think of a good tunic, I have the wide trousers they wore, and long beads and a even a tie for my head (very thin floaty scarf).

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that sounds like it'd work! And look to see if you have an abstract sort of brooch to pin on the tunic, a bit of bold, costume jewelry could do a lot to set the mood.

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 10:05 am (UTC)(link)
Rather surprisingly, I found that wearing the 3D glasses over my normal ones worked well.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 10:43 am (UTC)(link)
Oh really? That's good to know for those who wear glasses (not that either of us do). It's just that a friend in the US wore his lenses especially, so I thought you had to.

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 10:51 am (UTC)(link)
I have to wear my glasses all the time. Following a cataract operation about eight years ago, I'm only slightly short-sighted in the eye they operated on but remain very short-sighted in the other. Perhaps I should experiment with a monocle. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 10:54 am (UTC)(link)
And you can wear glasses? I am very short-sighted in one eye and can't because I get two different-sized images. I have to wear hard contacts because of keratoconis in that eye and I hate them. They hurt so much sometimes.

Off to bed now; good night!

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 10:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I can wear glasses. I think my optician did wonder if I'd have problems, but my brain seems to be pretty good at adapting.

Good night. Sleep well!

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah! Thanks! I may have to do that.

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 08:56 am (UTC)(link)
I hope you both enjoy Avatar... it's a pity you can't see it in 3D, but understandable.

It sounds like you deserve a holiday. :) Hope the web design course goes well...

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 10:42 am (UTC)(link)
I loved it! Greg thought it was predictable. Well, to a certain extent it was (I knew what he'd do to impress, and at the end--trying to avoid spoilers for others) but I didn't care. It was a beautiful and spectacular ride. I'm sort of glad I didn't see it in 3D considering my dislike of heights. :-P I'd kind of like to see the effect though. I loved how we came to sympathise with the aliens against the humans. Man, I'd love to have a physique like that.

I suppose it will--I know I'm good at design and techy stuff--but whether it'll do me any good is another matter.

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 10:55 am (UTC)(link)
Glad that you enjoyed the film. :) I don't like heights either, but luckily my brain seemed to know that I was sitting safely in a cinema. (I'm also fine in aeroplanes. It's only when there's nothing solid between me and the drop that I'm uncomfortable.)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd say me too, but I was also fine parasailing. I think the connection with the ground (seeing a building or cliff diminish towards it) does it as well as the possibility of falling. I might give it a go if someone here will go with me. I don't much like going on my own.

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2010-01-15 08:42 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad you liked it. :) Yes, the story was a predictable one, but the way it was portrayed was great. Loved Sigourney Weaver in it too. :D

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-15 09:14 am (UTC)(link)
She was great, as always! There was a lot of stuff telegraphed ahead of time for sure, but I didn't mind because it was never boring.

[identity profile] ultrapsychobrat.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 09:07 am (UTC)(link)
That was an interesting link. The first time I saw this effect was in a movie--can't remember the name, but it was scary, about a serial killer (has Sigourney Weaver in it). It was startling.
When do you leave on your vacation? Sounds great.
Edited 2010-01-14 09:12 (UTC)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 10:38 am (UTC)(link)
I don't watch things with serial killers.

Not for another month, but at least we're booked. Now I have to get the cats in at the vet's cattery.

[identity profile] bigdamnxenafan.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
That sounds like a fun evening out! Hope you have a great time. I'm looking forward to hearing what you think of Avatar.

I've seen those Invisible Man pics before. Very cool and as you said very eerie.

Hope all is well with you. *hugs*

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I really enjoyed it! It was an exhilarating ride, and I dreamed about being an avatar last night, probably because I envied them their lithe, strong, healthy, and beautiful bodies so much. :-)

[identity profile] bigdamnxenafan.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
“But only in our dreams can we be truly free It was always thus and always thus will be.” (Dead Poets Society)

Dreams are a wonderful thing. I'm glad you enjoyed the movie. I still haven't seen it, though I did see Sherlock Holmes and enjoyed it immensely.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
That's next on my list!

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Cool indeed!
I wish I could see Avatar too. The only problem is that George won´t go, nor Jirka, the first can´t stay sitting for a long time, the latter is to busy. I will not go alone...Non of my friends avalable(or they have seen the film).

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't like going alone either. Now I have to convince Greg to see the Holmes one. We watch a lot of films on DVD but there's so much more impact on a big screen, and the sound was excellent, surrounding us.
