Blobs and classic SF

[livejournal.com profile] spacefall and I were discussing blobs (mainly as in green, bubbling, Andromedan) and I recalled a classic SF story about four people who got partially digested by a blob. The wonders of Google! With a minimum of info I found it was called Four in One and was written by Damon Knight in 1958. And what's more, it's in an on-line anthology here with some other great SF stories. I just re-read it and The Big Front Yard which I remembered fondly from those yellow Gollancz SF anthologies I devoured as a kid.

I wonder what else I can find on-line. I crave some Cordwainer Smith.

Oh, yeah, that's a really good story!

And speaking of Damon Knight, here's my Brush with Greatness story: I got flamed by Damon Knight once on Usenet!

Well, OK, OK, that's a gross exaggeration. It wasn't a flame at all. He was perfectly polite. But he is on public record as disagreeing with me personally about proper usenet posting techniques. :) (For the record, I still maintain that I had the right side of that dispute: top-posting is just plain wrong.)

I didn't know he was still around! And I agree with you. :-)

I didn't know he was still around!

He's not any more, alas. He died last year.

Cheers, that was great!

Hmmm, I remember reading 'Instructions' while mooching about at the college library. I used to fill that gap between physics and computing by reading scifi.
