Too hot for a meal out

We have workmen in to repair grouting in the bathroom, put new tiles at one end of the bath where the wood was very damaged, and to fit a new bath screen instead of the crappy shower curtain the cubs like to shred. To hang the bath screen, which looks great, they had to add reinforcing behind the tiled wall which meant going through another wall which right now is being replastered. This means that I've had people going in and out for tolls and to mix plaster etc, and the outside doors have been open all day so the heat pump in the TV room can't cope due to the open plan layout. This room of course is always hot in summer, but it's particularly bad today, and the workmen keep saying what a hot house it is and how it's even worse in here than outside. :-( I'd kill for another heat pump in here.

Tonight is Greg's work's annual dinner. I'm not looking forward to it because restaurants here don't have air conditioning and I'm already sweltering, dammit. I'll be wearing more clothes than I am now, even though they're pure linen, it will be stinking hot, and I could well be flailing around for small talk that isn't about what one does, or doesn't do in my case, for a living. I just hope I sit near one of the three people I sort of know.

It seems mad that restaurants don't have air con. It's bad enough for the diners, but imagine working in that, cooking and serving :0(

Wow, sounds like the time our heat pump went out last summer and we couldn't open the windows.

And I totally sympathize about work dinners. I loathe the things too.

*sends cooling thoughts*

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-12-10 10:37 am (UTC)(link)
The place was open all along one wall, so the heat wasn't bad at all. That was about the best thing though. The set menu was... weird and full of things I couldn't eat, and it was also as noisy as hell (the usual concrete floors you get in fashionable places) so I had to yell at the people around me and I now have a migraine. Bleah.

I'm sitting up till our bedroom has cooled down enough for me to go up there since I couldn't leave the windows open while we were out.

*Is sweltering with you*
Although it's really not so terribly hot today, but the humidity is oppressive.

I do hope you find someone interesting to talk to tonight.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-12-10 10:40 am (UTC)(link)
The humidity seemed to be only about 80% according to my weather pixie, but I was sweating every thine I did anything more demanding than sitting down.

Hmmm. Well, I found people to talk to, but I had a very nice woman with little English on one side and a shouter who sprayed on the other. Oy.

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2009-12-10 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
*hugs* I can't imagine a restaurant without A/C... people would simply refuse to go to them here.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-12-10 10:41 am (UTC)(link)
I think I only know two, new places just down the road. Usually you only get it on large offices here.

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2009-12-10 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Considering that my thermometer is reading 97 degrees (ok, it's not official- for official temp they put the pickup in a shaded box with a fan) outside at 8:44 am on Dec 10, you can see why it's been said that So. Fla. could never have been urbanized without A/C.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-12-10 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
[hollow laugh] In this place homes have little insulation, no double glazing, no central heating for winter, and no aircon. I hopw we can afford to put a second heat pump in this room. I spend a lot of time in here and an open door and a fan aren't really that effective (but better than nothing). At least we have a cool room for dinner, DVDs, and downloads.

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2009-12-10 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, where I am nearly all homes have no insulation (which would help to keep out the heat), no double glazing (would be nice to keep out the heat), no central heating (admittedly we don't need it), no attics, no basements, (pretty much no storage space beyond closets just big enough for your clothes)... of course, where I am was built in the late 1940's and I suspect they thought they were building vacation homes for middle-class folks, in the days when builders imagined everyone was going to be able to afford two homes (they were wrong.)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-12-11 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
We don't have attics or basements either. It sounds very like there, except that you have aircon. Eeee, luxury!

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2009-12-11 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
It'd be 90 degrees F by my computer if I didn't run the A/C in this room. I think it would DIE. ;^)

[identity profile] kalinda001.livejournal.com 2009-12-10 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
*hugs* Sending cool thoughts.

Hope it's a good experience tonight and you get to sit with people you know at least a little.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-12-10 10:42 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I spoke to a guy I knew for part of the evening; otherwise it was pretty hard going. And I now have a migraine.

[identity profile] kalinda001.livejournal.com 2009-12-10 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Migraine...ugh. *hugs* Hope you feel better soon. At least it's over now.

Repairing bathroom *good*. Pity about the inconvenience that's going with it. Also pity about restaurants with no a/c. Is there a reason for it?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-12-10 10:44 am (UTC)(link)
Um... the fact that it's here? You generally only get aircon in newish cars and large offices. I love my car for that.
ext_50187: (Default)

[identity profile] jomacmouse.livejournal.com 2009-12-11 11:49 am (UTC)(link)
I was just wondering if there was some sort of restriction going on in your neck of the woods. If it's just that the restaurant is in a building without it, fair enough.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-12-11 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I think only hotel restaurants have aircon, but the ones in the new restaurant block down the road all have it, I think. We might go there for Thai tonight. Mmmm.

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2009-12-10 08:53 am (UTC)(link)
It has been a hot day that's for sure... hope the dinner won't be too bad. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-12-10 10:46 am (UTC)(link)
The heat part wasn't too bad as it was open all along one wall, but I wasn't impressed with the noise (the usual fashionable concrete floor), the menu (I couldn't eat any of the entrées), or the shouty guy next to me who sprayed. Sigh. I have a migraine and I'm sitting up till it's gone and the bedroom's cooled down enough for me to go upstairs since we couldn't leave the windows open while we were out.

Dessert was nice though. Chocolate tasting plate. :-)

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2009-12-12 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Poor you... some work parties are real ordeals, aren't they. :( I still remember a work party held at an event centre where there were no tables/chairs to eat the sit-down food. Urgh. :(

The dessert sounds the best part. :)

Hope you're feeling better today...

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-12-12 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
That sounds like a real disaster. I'd have probably said "sod you" and sat on the floor to eat.

The dessert was great, and the steak very good too without the entirely unwarranted oxtail.

The migraine went away overnight so that was good. :-)

Oh and thank you for the card!

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2009-12-14 08:56 am (UTC)(link)
Luckily there was a podium where a few of us were able to sit. :)

It's good the migraine went away overnight. :)

You're welcome. :)

[identity profile] emerald-happy.livejournal.com 2009-12-10 09:30 am (UTC)(link)
aaaaah, that's like my room in summer. I have to sleep downstairs.

Work dinners sound so overly formal. I do hope there's someone interesting to talk to there.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-12-10 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it gets really, really hot upstairs, which is where the guys were working. I can cool it down by opening windows at night, but I couldn't while we were out.

Conversation was pretty hard going, both through lack of interesting (to me) topics and the sheer noise there.

Ah well, my library books are ready to be picked up tomorrow, including The King of Attolia. :-)

[identity profile] emerald-happy.livejournal.com 2009-12-10 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I forsee a day of relaxing and reading in quiet with cats and ice cream.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-12-10 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
It'll be a day of hard work in the sticky heat in the morning, library and lunch (maybe ice cream then), and trying to relax and read while the tiler works in the bathroom. I'll retreat to the room with the heat pump, but if the front door is open because he's coming and going, it won't be that cool because of the open plan. Sigh. I worry about my puter, labouring away in the heat.

[identity profile] emerald-happy.livejournal.com 2009-12-10 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
awwww, that sucks. *sends you Vila and a cool glass of A&S*

Someone showed me this http://theoatmeal.com/comics/cat_know today and it amused me. I did not know kitties were unimpressed by cupcakes!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-12-10 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha, that's cool! I knew about the diesel and even wrote a haiku once:

Cats lie in the sun
flat-out like furry lizards
their motors idling.

Because they do.

I didn't know about them not tasting anything sweet though. Ashley licks up the remains of my coffee milk shakes and yogurts, but it must be for the milkiness.

Gotta go now.

[identity profile] emerald-happy.livejournal.com 2009-12-10 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
ooooh, that's a good haiku. Someone I know has an icon with a bunch of cat haikus.

I love at the start of A Civil Campaign when Miles puts the tray cover over the kitten. "The undaunted purr resonated against the silver hemisphere like some small machine stripping its gears." I always thought that was the cutest kitten description ever and all the better for being so short and not directly describing the cuteness.

I did think of your tea drinking cats when I read that.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-12-11 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
I love that description too.

They don't drink tea, but Ashley loves the smell. She knocked my cup over recently and made a hell of a mess, but luckily none got on her. I'm careful not to let her get too close now.

[identity profile] emerald-happy.livejournal.com 2009-12-11 10:27 am (UTC)(link)
Ashley is a darling. *sends love and tea-scented cat treats from across teh internets*

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2009-12-10 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
A hot day...I am sorry because you are too hot...I would enjoy a bit of your heat and exchange it for some chill from here.
Ah,business dinner, hmmm...I hope you will manage all righ.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-12-11 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Never mind, you will have snow soon and I envy that so much.

[identity profile] luinielle.livejournal.com 2009-12-11 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
I absolutely hate work dinners, too - I've never had a 'regular career' job (I'm currently a pastry/baker at a friend's catering company) so it's a bit hard to talk with all the finance people. Hope you at least enjoyed the food?

*Sending you cool thoughts* It's currently 22F (5C) here and the kits are sleeping together in the middle of one of the sofas.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-12-11 07:15 am (UTC)(link)
Wow. It rarely gets that cold here. Our cats have been outside in the shade like sensible creatures, but they're in here now the tiler has gone.

I did enjoy some of the meal. I should post about it.
