Day 7 - H is for Hyperdrive

Here's another in the science fiction ABC series for [livejournal.com profile] naarmamo today. 100 points if you can name the spaceship, though I bet only one of you can. :-)

H is for Hyperdrive

I had fun finding out how to give an impression of motion with the letters of "hyperdrive".

My NaArMaMo 2009 Gallery is here.

My first thought was Discovery 2001, but I'm not convinced the middle section matches. I'll get back to you later when I've checked a couple of books.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 09:13 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, that has a huge sphere on it. :-)

[identity profile] reapermum.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 09:41 am (UTC)(link)
Checked the books and it's not in those. It looks like a 60s design that was in the science book I can't find. I thought it was an A C Clarke book but I can't see it in those. A NERVA engine at the back and the crew quarters well away at the front.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 09:52 am (UTC)(link)
You won't find it in a book. :-)

ps Love the effect on the word Hyperdrive.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 09:51 am (UTC)(link)
I tried a Gaussian blur and that didn't work, then had a go at a smudge with a really big brush, and behold: I got this really cool effect. I was very pleased.

[identity profile] sallymn.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 11:12 am (UTC)(link)
Me too - isn't it utterly cool?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it worked because I was smudging discreet areas of colour., I was expecting a soft speed blur, but this was so much better!

[identity profile] ultrapsychobrat.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 09:18 am (UTC)(link)
Very impressive.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 09:23 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I learned some new techniques doing this.

[identity profile] linda-joyce.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 10:06 am (UTC)(link)
That is good, I can feel the speed. That's what I like about NaArt it is a teaching experience, I've learned so much over the years I have been a part of this.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 10:16 am (UTC)(link)
Me too, though I really should have learned a lot more. I tend to stick to tried and tested unless I want a new effect.

[identity profile] pet-lunatic.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 10:30 am (UTC)(link)
Is it the Camden Lock? :D

Love the picture. It gives a strong sense of speed!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
YES! It is! Protecting Britain's interests in a changing galaxy! I don't know why more people don't watch Hyperdrive. It's brilliant!

[identity profile] pet-lunatic.livejournal.com 2009-08-08 09:50 am (UTC)(link)
I love Hyperdrive! And everything else Nick Frost/Kevin Eldon and their ilk have ever done! :D

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-08 11:09 am (UTC)(link)
Me too: series and films and all!

[identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 10:39 am (UTC)(link)
It's the HMS Camden Lock!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
YAY! It is! I love that series, and what else could I draw for this topic?

I need a Hyperdrive icon, even if only three people will recognise it.

[identity profile] san-valentine.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 11:35 am (UTC)(link)
Another terrific ABC entry. I love the effect on hyperdrive and the stars turning into lines radiating out .

Have you got the alphabet (so far) gathered in one place, or are the entries scattered through the two Naarmamo galleries ?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you notice the red-blue shift? :-)

That's a good idea! I'll do that though I doubt I even have 10 yet.

I love the effect on the lettering, and the perspective with the star trails :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I was pleased with how well it worked, and the lettering effect was the result of experimentation with smudging which worked a lot better than I thought: I'd assumed I'd just get a speed blur.

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 01:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Love the effect with the lettering and a very apropos choice of spaceship.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh cool, another one who knows that show!

And I see you're back. :-)

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
ZZZZZIP... you did a great job on this one.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I was unsure when I started about how it would work, but I was pleased with how it came out.

[identity profile] kindkit.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Other people have beaten me to the name (*sulks*) but it's a lovely rendition of the Camden Lock.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so pleased to find there are more than you and me who know it! Thank you! I couldn't resist with that topic.

I really need a Hyperdrive icon.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, look what I just found (http://www.sitcom.co.uk/hyperdrive/interview.shtml)!

Actually it's pretty good, with characters and eps etc. I should check out that site for other series too.

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely perfect! This Alphabet project should be put together like a small "textbook" :-)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I should offer it to publishers one day, but I fear I'll have to make things less fannish before do that. This ship for example is from a British TV series. I'm going to put them in one gallery though, as [livejournal.com profile] san_valentine suggested.

[identity profile] daiseechain.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Fantastic! :-D

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-07 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! :-D
