Day 2 - Glass lizard

I was casting about for something to draw for the [livejournal.com profile] naarmamo National Art Making Month challenge, and decided on a pale green glass lizard I have, with inlaid diamonds of paua shell. It wasn't very easy as there are strange highlights, even in the shadows under it.

Glass lizard

Once again, suggestions of subjects would be welcome.

My NaArMaMo 2009 Gallery is here.

Can't remember if I've said this but that is beautiful and has a lot of 'MMMM lovely' in it too

Wow - that looks very cool! The highlights came out nicely.
The original lizard must be very beautiful, do you have a photo of that?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-02 10:17 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, no. I should take one. He's only about 10cms across. :-)

Lovely! I love paua shell - I once saw a pendant in red paua but didn't have the money for it at the time, muttergrumble.

You've done the glass well :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-02 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I wasn't that satisfied with it, but I did get the colour right. :-)

I have quite a bit of paua jewellery, the blue-purple sort.

He's beautiful.
How bout one of Vic as the kittens have already had a look in.
As you've already obliged Kalinda with pictures of Sester, Argus and Reya how about Kirsten, Corinne and Ture and Allren?
As you've Simpsonised most of the regular crew how would Sester and co look with the Simpson treatment?
Flowers that are in bloom?
View from the window?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-02 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I've drawn Vic a lot in previous years, and I've drawn Corinne too, last year. I'll have to find out from Kalinda what the other three look like. I haven't even been able to keep up with the saga lately. :-P

There aren't many flowers in bloom in winter. I did think of a camellia that's out now, but it's mostly white and hard to do.

We have a few that although they are supposed to be just summer plants because Winters have been so mild lately they've flowered all year round.
Berries?fruits? Conifers or other evergreens?
Mind you a tree bare for winter makes an interesting drawing too.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-02 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
We have all evergreens around us (only exotics are deciduous) but I'll have to see what I can find.

::sigh:: I will never get over the way you always make drawing look so effortless. Beautiful.

Let's see, you've done self portraits and cats; have you ever done Greg?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-02 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahahaha, it wasn't effortless. Fairly fast compared to some I've done, but I mucked about a lot trying to get the reflections and refractions right--and not quite succeeding.

I refuse to draw Greg until he removes the facial hair that makes him look like redneck trailer trash. Yep, you can tell it bugs me. :-P

Lovely! It looks very cool and translucent.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-02 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Then it seems to have worked! :-D That's just how it does look.

That's lovely, and the original sounds lovely too.

I've got some Maori fishhook earrings inlaid with paua shell. They were a gift from Candy, a New Zealander I met in New York, as we were both staying with a couple who run a Star Wars website we've both written stories for. And one half of that couple, Brian, is also a Kiwi. It's a strange, small world, isn't it ?

I have quite a bit of paua jewellery. I never liked it as a kid, associating it with kitsch, in particular a horrible ashtray my father kept in his study for visitors; for ages paua equalled bad taste. I can now celebrate the eccentricity of Fred and Myrtle's Paua House (http://www.galenfrysinger.com/nz_chch_museum_shell_house.htm) (now in the Canterbury Museum), and love the look of it in necklaces and earrings. The colours are amazing.

Oooh, he's beautiful--a talisman of life.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-02 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
When I saw him at a Pasifika festival, in the Maori section, I had to have him!

The way you captured the highlights really works; glass reflections in shadows, yes.

As for suggestions for subjects...
- you still have more ABCs that you could do
- cartoon versions of Harry Potter characters
- B7 characters as animals (e.g. Avon as a black cat)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-03 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
I have some ABCs on my list! That was a great idea. I also thought up some more ideas for parodies, but I'll wait to see if they work out before mentioning them. :-)

[identity profile] daiseechain.livejournal.com 2009-08-05 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you've captured the glass quite well.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-05 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! The colour's pretty right anyway. :-)
