Crazed mouse

Bum. My mouse won't work properly. The cursor jumps around randomly and refuses to go where I want it to. Luckily I have the graphics pen.

Greg has five mice in the junk room where he has all his equipment and the home server, but they all seem to be attached to something, or irretrievably tangled. Typical. They still remember him at his previous job for wondering why his mouse wasn't working and finally realising that he had two identical ones in the jumble on his desk and the one he was using wasn't the one which was plugged in.

At least you have the graphics pen.

I know! I thought, oh noes, NaArMaMo is coming up, what if the pen doesn't work! But it does. Phew.

Have you tried cleaning the mouse? My optical mouse gets cat-hairs stuck under it and then it acts just like you say. A good tweezing so far has always restored it.

That was the first thing I did, as that's happened to me before. It was clean.

Bummer. I googled 'cursor jumps randomly' and found this thread where someone with a laptop had the problem.
http://forums.qrz.com/showthread.php?t=201051

I think they decided the laptop was possessed.

another place said more often than not these symptoms are simple - generally a result of an environmental issue, rather than a bad peripheral device or software. The first thing to suspect is the surface you are using your mouse on. Optical mice can react abnormally on extremely reflective surfaces (such as high-gloss finishes or glass) or surfaces that contain very contrasty graphics (like a busy mousepad graphic). To determine if your issue is environmentally related, simply use a plain, solid-colored mouse pad and see if the issues continue.

I'm using the same mousepad I've always had. The cursor moves even when I'm not doing anything. I suspect the last MS update which was overnight.

Ah! Updates. I hate updates. Perhaps a new mouse driver would help?

My sons have their optical mice gum up on them all the time. Dust and dirt gets caught in the sensor. I learned that a knitting needle is perfect for removing debris.

That was the first thing I checked and it's fine. :-( Even with the pen I'm sometimes losing focus on the current window. Sigh.

Bummer! Technology is wonderful until it goes all glitchy and wonky on you.

One night Cory and I were both having a horrible time with the mice on our laptops. My cursor would jump and fly off the screen. His was doing something simliar. We finally realized that we got the wireless mice mixed up. I was using the one plugged into his laptop and vice versa. Geniuses! LOL

I know that doesn't really help you, but it's might give you a laugh. :) Hope you get your mouse back!

Greg the hardware expert will take a look tonight. I hope. :-P Neither of us have wireless mice though.

This is not good indeed.I hope in a happy ending - because I look very much forward to your pictures in NAARMAMO!!!

Thank you! At least the graphics pen is mostly working. :-P

How irritating.

[identity profile] linda-joyce.livejournal.com 2009-07-30 09:07 am (UTC)(link)
Hope it's fixed by now, it is very irritating when the hard ware goes.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-01 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Not so far. I'm still using the pen which isn't designed for double-clicking etc. Sigh.

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2009-07-31 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Now that is just the sort of mistake my husband would have made too!
Hope it's sorted soon.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-08-01 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Not so far. And it's NaArMaMo. Crap. The pen works, but is hard to double-click and loses focus, usually while I'm typing.
