Gen ficathon

I was just saying to [livejournal.com profile] astrogirl2 that when I've finished my [livejournal.com profile] multiverse5000 story (which is due this weekend; eep) I'll be free till August and [livejournal.com profile] naarmamo.

I forgot about the [livejournal.com profile] gen_ficathon. Official fandoms include Doctor Who, Lost, Star Trek, SG1, and SGA among others; you can request other fandoms too.

The timeline is:

June 4-25: Sign-Ups
June 28: Assignments Sent Out
July 28: Default Deadline
August 11: Final Deadline for Initial Participants
August 18: Final Deadline for Pinch-Hitters
(projected) August 20: Posting Begins!
Anyone else want to play?

[Edit:] B7 isn't one of the official fandoms after all, so I won't be doing it as I doubt my ability to write in most of the fandoms. I'm sure I saw it there when they put it up, but I must have been seeing things, or I was thinking of the voting post.

[identity profile] mistraltoes.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
Hm. I don't seem to qualify for Remix this year, so if I get my Multiverse story done, I'd play. It's a little too soon to tell, though.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 09:58 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently B7 isn't there after all. It was a few days ago. Oh well.

I looked at the list of official fandoms, and Blake's 7 doesn't seem to be there.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 10:00 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure I saw it there a few days ago. Oh well. I suppose I'll give it a miss then.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
I'm kind of dithering... :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 10:01 am (UTC)(link)
I've pretty much decided against it now. I'm not sure about my ability to write the fandoms they want.

[identity profile] mistraltoes.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 10:21 am (UTC)(link)
But I'm sure you could; you've done some Heroes before, haven't you? And perhaps Lost?

If you don't *want* to write anything other than B7, that's one thing. But if it's lack of confidence that's stopping you, then perhaps the challenge is just what you need to help you see your own potential. Just sayin'.

Edited to fix the bad HTML.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 10:24 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure. I don't know anyone in it, so I think I'll leave it. Anyway, Greg thinks I should start writing original stuff, and there's the Lynx series with two stories outstanding.

[identity profile] mistraltoes.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh? Well, never let it be said that I discouraged the writing of original material. More power to ya!

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 09:38 am (UTC)(link)
Doesn't look like Blake's 7 made the "official fandom" list, which is ashame as I meant to vote and mention others to and forgot completely. Though I seem remember them saying you could write for things that didn't make the list as well.

THen again I'm not even sure why there is a limit on what fandoms you can write, since I don't think it's an exchange. Ah well.

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 09:39 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, it IS an exchange, that makes sense then. But it also makes me a lot more reluctant to volunteer for fear that I'll get stuck writing Ten/Master Doctor Who fic or something, when all I'd really be interested in is B7.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 10:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, me too. I'm giving it a miss. I'm sure I saw B7 there, but I must be thinking of the voting post or something. :-P

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 10:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it was originally, but I guess it got voted off the island. Alas.

Could always try running a B7 gen ficathon yourself. Though I don't know how much participation you'd actually get. :/

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 10:13 am (UTC)(link)
Having been burned once, I don't think so. Never mind. I suppose I should work on Lynx or something original instead.

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 10:18 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, was there once a B7 ficathon? Must've been before my time. What a bummer. :/ Probably better to work on something else, though I know the threat of a deadline can help inspire me.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 10:22 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't B7 specifically; it was a crossover one, but yes, it was well before your time. I thought it was a good idea, but no one else seemed to. I suppose I'm not well known enough to run a ficathon.

And anyway, who'd take part in a B7 one? Hardly anyone writes for it now.

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 10:28 am (UTC)(link)
Awww. Yeah. It's hard to run a ficathon and you usually have to promote them a lot and even then the return is often paltry. It's easy if it's a big fandom or something really popular, but yeah. I'd sign up for a B7 ficathon of some kind, but I do think it would probably not get a lot of writers.

Not that a small (say six person) ficathon would be pointless, as presumably that'd be six more fics that otherwise wouldn't exist, but yeah. There's also the fact that In an exchange I wouldn't want to write the sort of stuff the rest of the fandom would want.

I guess something like people submitting a bunch of prompts and then other people claiming them could work, though again that still means you have to hope people both submit prompts and later claim them. Sigh.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 10:39 am (UTC)(link)
That's how I'd run it: a smorgasbord. :-) But yeah, I'd be likely to get a few prompts and maybe three or four stories. I'm not overly fond of exchange ficathons; though I've never had any bad experiences in them, I know a couple of people who didn't get stories in more than one.

I suppose we could gauge interest on the B7 comms and run a small one on [livejournal.com profile] b7fic. People could even claim their own prompts if they like, as I suspect I did in multiverse. :-p

I'm glad you feel like writing more B7 though! We've lost a few writers to other fandoms in the last couple of years, and some of those that stayed rarely write anyway.

Maybe first I should get interest up by running a rewatch. I just haven't had the energy to arrange that and pimp it about though. I've been feeling pretty crap lately which saps my will to do anything much. I'm just glad I enjoyed writing "Hot Stuff"; comedy at least cheers me up.

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
I really do love B7 and I noticed that while watching Farscape I kept getting potential fic ideas--for B7. If that's still happening despite how long it's been since I've watched it, I guess I shouldn't give up completely. It's hard a bit since [livejournal.com profile] babel was sort of my main cohort in the fandom and I think she's . . . not so much moved on, but her main interest is somewhere new. So I feel a little like I'm shouting into the wind. I do find it impressive though that as long as I've been in the fandom (and it's almost two years now) not a lot of people have come into it, and those who have haven't been very writerly. It's such a good show I'm honestly surprised more people don't come into it and write. Ah well.

But we watched "The Way Back" the other day and it was a lot of fun and I hope to rewatch the rest of the series sometime this summer. I also discovered [livejournal.com profile] pet_lunatic is playing Avon in a panfandom RP and somehow has a Blake, Vila, Dayna and Travis there as well. So I dusted off [livejournal.com profile] deltarrant and apped him there. I don't know how well that'll go, but it might serve enough to get me interested a bit more.

I'm glad about "Hot Stuff" too. I guess that you're waiting for a deadline to post that?

I've had a few bad experiences with exchanges, though some great experiences too. I find that it's best when the scope is narrow. So a B7 general exchange is almost impossible (let alone a multifandom like that comm) and that pairing centric or theme-centric tend to do the best. So I'm sure a Blake/Avon ficathon would probably go well here (for um, those fans who like B/A, of course) since they'd automatically get something they liked. Me or you having to write B/A would probably be difficult though, as would one of them having to write A/V for me or something. Anyway.

The nice thing about a prompts claiming sort of ficathon is that yes, you can claim your own but also if you default you're not letting someone else down. They can also be open ended. I'm running one in another fandom right now and while it has a July 11th deadline for when fics are due, I intend to keep the prompts available to be written after that, and allow people to request more to replentish the ones that were written. I just wanted the deadline for motivational purposes.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 11:02 am (UTC)(link)
I keep hearing about people pimping new people in, but they don't seem to show up in the comms. Mind you, I love other series like Farscape but I'm not in any comms but the rewatch one because I'm not really interested in discussing it. Lost though, I could have joined some discussion comm but I never got round to it; OTOH I'm not that interested in writing for it. It's weird how differently I feel about different fandoms.

I saw your discussion with her! I had no idea she was RPing before that. I also don't know who she's playing with, but no one I know AFAIK. Hardly any B7 people RP these days.

I posted it already (http://vilakins.livejournal.com/466358.html)! You missed it! :-P

That sounds like a good idea. I find deadlines useful to make me write, because I tend not to otherwise, esp if I have a good book. I suppose the depression's getting me down.

Off to bed now, sorry. I want to get up fairly early tomorrow (Saturday) to go to a book sale.

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 11:11 am (UTC)(link)
... oh wow, I had no idea you had already posted it. I'm not sure how I missed that. Though my internet was out for a few days so it might've been during that and I scrolled past not really seeing it and thinking it was a meme or something. Ack, sorry. Have bookmarked it for later now! The poster is hilarious!! I'm impressed :D

And yeah, apparently the girl who plays Dayna commented and said her roommate is Vila, so they don't appear to be people we know at all. (I went to the Vila's LJ and she doesn't even have B7 listed as an interest and isn't a member of any of the comms or anything.) Really surprising. I wonder how many other B7 fans are out there like that! Especially shocking since I tried so long to get some interest in joining the Avon and Vila [livejournal.com profile] babel and I had going at our old game. But you are right, there are a lot of fandoms I love that I don't watch or participate in communities and a lot I don't write in and so on and so forth.

I agree about deadlines; it's just extra motivation. Another nice thing about prompts claiming sort of ficathon is that there are likely to be pairing prompts and gen prompts, which can be a lot harder to find in a more traditional ficathon exchange. (At least one that isn't exclusively a gen ficathon.) It's silly, really. I keep forcing myself to try to write in the new fandom [livejournal.com profile] babel is into, but almost without fail all my fic ideas for it are gen and the fandom is almost exclusively slash (and the main fic comm is a slash comm) so I end up just not writing anything, or trying to force a slashy spin on my gen stuff, which frustrates me. I like the freedom to be able to write gen (or het/femslash) if I want or not.

Book sale sounds fun! Have a good time. I going to shower and sleep myself, being it's 4:10am here. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm surprised you didn't see the poster!

There was a B7 fan posting a vid on [livejournal.com profile] blakes7 this week, and I almost pointed them at my "B7 on LJ" page, but the comms are so dead these days I just couldn't be bothered. Some of that's probably me being a bit depressed though.

I'd rather like to get into an RP again, but it's hard in my timezone, and also hard to find someone to take part. Sometimes characters talk to Vila on his LJ though. BTW who runs [livejournal.com profile] captaintarrant, you or Thetis? I'd guess Thetis who is off-line these days, so Vila didn't post a birthday greeting.

I noticed that [livejournal.com profile] babel's really into the Beatles now--your fault, I believe? ;-) Maybe you could start another comm for it?

I've just had my Saturday morning cappuccino, and it's time to hit the book fair, just down the road. I've often found some gems amid the dross at those things.

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Still haven't gotten around to your fic yet, I apologize. I'm just so flakey with reading things these days. :/ (I'm pretty sure I upset [livejournal.com profile] babel pretty badly not reading one of her fics either. I meant to I've just not gotten around to it...)

I think I "saw" the poster and didn't really see the poster and just thought it was a meme banner thing or something. I did see the vidder who posted. Sharing the links isn't a bad idea, though with any amount of prodding about s/he could find them fairly easily.

I think Thetis runs that one. I just have [livejournal.com profile] deltarrant. I'd point you to the one I just joined, but the only open characters really left are Jenna, Cally, Soolin and Servalan. Oh, and Gan. I'm also not entirely crazy about the characterizations of Avon and Vila, which is hard. XD Ah well.

I wouldn't say it's entirely my fault she's into the Beatles now. It's an old fandom for me. I am always keen to talk about them and share pictures of them with her, etc. but she really went the fannish route herself. I'm trying to play along, but a lot of my fannish glee over them has waned. I'm just not excited about them anymore like she is. I love them, of course, but I'm not fannishly active, I guess. Anyway, I run, and have run, [livejournal.com profile] beatlesslash for years, so that's not an issue.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
I'm also not entirely crazy about the characterizations of Avon and Vila

Yeah, I did wonder about that. Who are you playing; Tarrant?

I know you used to be into the Beatles, so I assumed it was your influence that got her interested. :-) Yeah, I know how it is to love characters or series but not be actually fannish about them.

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm playing Tarrant. I really don't mind the Vila so much, I just wish the player could spell better. "Their" instead of "they're" and such, ugh.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
She probably writes quizzes! ;-)

I never understood how people could do that, but I recently found out a lot of Americans pronounce those words the same. To me "their" and "there" sound the same, but "they're" is said "they-er". Same thing with "your" and "you're" the latter has almost two syllables as "you-er" and "you" has a whole other vowel sound.

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Aaah, yeah. Their/there/they're are all said the same to me. I imagine different American accents can vary that, but generally it's all the same. Still baffling to me though. I get there/their a little, but they're is obviously a contraction for "they are" and therefore is easy (or should be!) not to misuse! Ugh.

The last one was in 2004, wasn't it? I'd take part, but I suppose it'd be a small turnout.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
It would be now that some of the regular writers have either left for other fandoms or are just not writing any more. It takes a ficathon or a challenge to get me writing these days, though the stories are still in my head.

Are you joining up to write new Trek? :-)

[personal profile] kernezelda 2009-06-06 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't decided yet. I have much interest, and a couple of lines have popped into my head, so I'll see how I feel as the deadline for sign-up approaches.
