"It was a youthful indiscretion. I shan't repeat it."
Old Friends
"Wonder if there's anything good on tonight." Sherm flicked the vidscreen on. "Could do with a bit of graphic violence. I need something relaxing to help me unwind after a hard day." He stared in disgust at a close-up of a woman wearing the glittery makeup fashionable in the outlying worlds and a nametag identifying her as Governor Le Grand. The camera pulled back to show a banner reading Outer Gaul Planetary Leaders' Conference. "Ugh. Politics." Sherm reached out to change the channel.
"No, wait!" Bayban had a foolish smile on his face. "That's Mignonette!"
"Eh? You know her?"
"I did once, and very well too." Bayban sighed nostalgically. "Let's just say we're old friends."
If Sherm didn't know better, he'd have thought old Babe had gone a bit soft and misty-eyed. "You mean ... you and she ..." He stared at Bayban.
The whole room fell silent as Bayban's henchmen stopped their card-games, snooker, and knife fights to look at Bayban accusingly.
"What?" Bayban came out of his reverie. "What's wrong?"
"A politician." Sherm's voice dripped with contempt. "How could you stoop so low?"
Bayban had the grace to blush. "It was a youthful indiscretion. I shan't repeat it."
