vilakins: Vila with stars superimposed (friends)

I'm not actually leaving LJ :-)

I'd like to make it clear that I'm not intending to leave LJ for Dreamwidth. However not only is DW the best alternative I've found so far, but it also seems a lot more active than InsaneJournal, and I may even meet a different group of people. I don't mind running two active journals. :-)

LJ is where all my friends and communities are, and I won't be leaving here unless something goes badly wrong with LJ. :-)

No reason you can't be on both surely?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-04-18 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. That's what I said. :-)

Good to have an alternative just in case.

Just in case LJ implodes or goes belly-up, yes. :-)

If you leave LJ, we will hunt you down and friend you.

Promise? :-D

It's just that a couple of people thought I might be leaving.

[identity profile] mistraltoes.livejournal.com 2009-04-18 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I was just teasing you. If everybody moves to Dreamwidth, I shall probably follow. But at this point, I'm not ready to bother with it. Who knows, though, as a P, I might change my mind tomorrow.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-04-18 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
I thought it was worth getting in at the beginning. I've been beta-testing and finding a few bugs for them.

[identity profile] mistraltoes.livejournal.com 2009-04-18 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
Good for you! If it works the way it's supposed to, it'll be great. I'm just feeling meh about starting yet another journal at the moment. I don't want to mess with keeping up both of them until I have to, that's all.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-04-18 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just going to import from LJ and respond to the comments I get there, so it's no big deal. I wouldn't bother having two completely different journals and having say RL on one and fandoms on the others. It's just a copy of this one, so you're not missing anything!

[identity profile] mistraltoes.livejournal.com 2009-04-18 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
I'm told that eventually you'll be able to manage both journals, comments and all, from the DW interface. I hope they get to that functionality soon!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-04-18 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yep! So far their import has a couple of bugs I've reported, but I'm impressed with what they've done so far.

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2009-04-18 07:33 am (UTC)(link)
I do hope you will manage both - I hope I will not lose you!
Enjoy your DW!*Hugs*

It's easy enough! I just post over there too (or import from here) and answer any comments there just as I do here. But don't worry; I'm not going unless LJ sinks. :-)

Me neither. I'll go further; I simply cannot be bothered to migrate to a new place at this stage. If LJ broke I would probabkly just stop. Anyway it doesn't seem to be doing anything particularly wrong atm.

I also feel dubious about the difference, which I don't altogether understand, in friend status. I have some people on my other ID who wanted to be friends and in whose lives I hadn't the slightest interest, so rather than seem unfriendly I just let it go ahead and then used the filter - everyone happy. I gather that may not be possible on DW?

No, you will be able to do everything on Dreamwidth that you can do on LJ; it's just that the concept of "friends" has been split into two parts: "subscribe" and "access". Subscribing to a journal means it goes on your "read" page (equivalent to "friends" page on LJ) and granting access to a journal means that they can read your friends-locked posts. And, yes, you can make custom groups too.

I think it looks fine too, but you never know if they've moved development to Russia, and if, as some suspect, using ads to finance them is eventually untenable. I'd be very upset if anything did happen because I know people and belong to comms here. I'd really hate to leave.

I do have another copy of my LJ at InsaneJournal, but I wasn't at all happy with their terminology (all based on mental illness and institutions), and I didn't even get any comments. DW is well thought out and people are actually commenting. I know some people are forcing LJers to comment over there, but I have no intention of changing anything here.

As for friends, I find that hard too. I read by filters, so I just friend them back and filter them out if they have nothing in common with me.

[identity profile] norda.livejournal.com 2009-04-18 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
That's part of why I haven't actively announced my Dreamwidth account here... I don't want LJers thinking I'm dumping them!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-04-18 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I announced only so that people already there would know I was. It's just a copy of my LJ, but if I make new friends there, then that will be great.

[identity profile] zoefruitcake.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 10:17 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad.

I intend to do the same, I think

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 10:31 am (UTC)(link)
:-) When you do, add me to your reading list / circle, and I'll do the same!
