Teev

Greg and I have been watching Enemy at the Door, a British series about the German occupation of Guernsey, one of the Channel Islands--thanks to a post by [livejournal.com profile] altariel which convinced me I had to. :-) The colour is so washed out it could be black and white, but it's a wonderful series full of excellent and intelligent characterisation, both of the islanders and the Germans.

And last night, a very young Anthony Head appeared as Clive Martel. For those interested, pics are here and here. [Edit] Apparently it was his TV debut.

In other news, TiVo is finally coming here, late this year. We've had TiVos since 2000 which we've programmed manually, but at last we'll have a proper service which actually knows when programs are on. Of course we'll have to buy a new TiVo, but that's no hardship for a Greg with gadget lust.

Ooooh, that sounds like my sort of show...

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
It's wonderful! They haven't bothered to remaster it going by the copy I have, but it's the characters and dialogue that matter, and any B7 fan would enjoy the good and bad being on both sides.

[Edit] I added links to a page about the show, and to [livejournal.com profile] altariel's post. :-)

Good lord, it's baby!Giles. And looking very handsome, too. Other pictures I've seen of young Tony Head have been very unflattering.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
He was quite lovely in this.

[identity profile] crycraven.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Aww! He `looks lovely!
Hello btw,how are you? How's that kitty's eye doing?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
He was, and very well cast too, since there was quite a resemblance between him and his series sister.

I'm OK if depressed about not being able to get a proper job or anything that even pays near the average wage, even for this country.

Jasmin is doing fine! The injury was under her eye, not the eye itself (such a relief given what we spent on two eye operations for Tessa). You can't see anything there now, but I'm still putting ointment in till it's gone, just to ensure there isn't a hard scar that might irritate her eye. She never seemed bothered by it though even when it was bad. She's a playful, lively little girl and I didn't even know anything was wrong till I saw the little lump.

[identity profile] crycraven.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
ooo, are you working now? What are you up to?

I am glad Jasmin is bouncing and bonny, and hope you keep your chin up. Actually, I thought about you when I was hope-googling for literary agents...let me see...

ah! Wow, looking through histories is fun, but worrying. Anyway, here you go:

http://www.carolinesheldonillustrators.co.uk/- and yours are better!

Nothing much. Just a few hours on a Friday doing scut work. Brain the size of a planet...

Um, only than about two. But yeah, I should screw up enough confidence to put together a children's book. Then get rejected in even more ways than I am at present. :-P

[identity profile] kalinda001.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
He looks sooo young and already handsome.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
He was, and he even looked quite like the actor playing his sister. :-)

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
I'd never heard of the series before, but it sounds interesting.

A younger Anthony looks quite nice... :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
It's an old one, B7 vintage, though it looks older because of the WW2 dress and fashions which they've done very well.

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Oh goodness, he looks SO young and adorable! Thanks for sharing the pictures. :D

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, he was! And even cuter on screen than in those stills. :-) I should watch the two eps again.

I've just found another British actor, Alun Armstrong, in a page of guest characters, and he's now playing an old guy in New Tricks, but still instantly recognisable. No B7 people though as this was being made around the same time.

[identity profile] executrix.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen three of the four disks of S1 (S2 won't be out in R1 until the summer). I love it! It's the show for people who don't think B7 was cynical enough!

In Baby!Giles' first episode (of two) he's not only wearing tweed and a sweater vest, he's wearing a *tie.* There'll always be an England.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
Ah yes, the British do specialise in bleak. And how they love it.

They're all so teddibly British even though they're descended from the French. One must not let the side down, you know.

[identity profile] zoefruitcake.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
wow, he looks so young!

Yay for your TiVo service

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 08:40 am (UTC)(link)
He was born in 1954 so... he was 24. :-)

We've been waiting for this for years!

[identity profile] altariel.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 10:07 am (UTC)(link)
Hurray! I'm glad you're enjoying it! :-)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
We've been watching at least one a night! I wish I could get Greg as interested in other programs I like.

[identity profile] linda-joyce.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 11:25 am (UTC)(link)
Dear Gods I remember watching that when it was first broadcast and being older than he was then!!! It was a good program, at least what I can remember of it, the memory is the first to go.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
It was possibly one my mother watched here; I can't remember. They probably showed it here. I do remember "Secret Army" was on because I recall the opening credits.

It is indeed an excellent program; quite fascinating. I keep wondering how I'd react to the situations.

[identity profile] linda-joyce.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
In my own case I would hope to be a brave underground member but I am know I'm much more likely to just endure, not help nor fight, just stay alive. But not at any cost.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too. I might perform little acts of sabotage and sedition if they were fairly safe though. I always loved the story of the old woman who tripped up a German officer on the Paris Metro steps with her cane, and was heard to mutter, "C'est mon troisième aujourd'hui" as she hobbled away. :-D

[identity profile] linda-joyce.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yes, I would hope to be as brave as that old lady. %D

[identity profile] pinkdormouse.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
That's on my amazon wishlist. Not that I can order anything until my credit card issue gets sorted...

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't the idea of a wishlist that other people buy you things on it? But of course if you don't give the link to it you will bever get anywehere. :)

[identity profile] pinkdormouse.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
The link is in the link list on the left hand side of my main LJ page. Or this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/registry/3FCB7DOEBG1MT) might be it too, since you seem to be asking.

Then again the credit card issue is a temporary hitch caused by paperwork getting held up in the post, so I should be able to buy stuff for myself again in a week or so.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Be warned: the visual quality is not great on mine, which were made in the US. It's never been remastered so it's washed out and grainy, but the sound's fine. Oh wait, I see there are 2008 versions on Amazon UK and if they're British-made, they may be a lot better. I see they're also on sale at the moment. :-)

Anyway, despite the version we got, probably ripped from video, we're enjoying it greatly.

[identity profile] pinkdormouse.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the 2008 versions I was looking at buying :-)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they're both around 18 ATM. I'd be tempted to get better versions but we already have this cheap one we found. Annoyingly they've left in the credits before and after ad breaks: I'm sure it's made from a tape. Never mind; we're still enjoying it.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! I love my TiVo. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
We were happy with what we had, but lately we've been using a Sky Box which does let you choose from a list of programs, but has a really crappy interface. Still better than manually programming times that may change though.

[identity profile] redstarrobot.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 03:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I sort of recall watching a few episodes of this, probably not too long after it first aired... sort of vague in my memory, but I recall liking it a lot.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
It's very British and therefore both mannered (they caught the 40s clipped accents of the upper classes very well) and bleak. There are shades of grey on both sides, and really, the writing is excellent, with the Germans as well drawn and varied as the locals. There are only two seasons of 13 eps each. It's a pity they didn't do a third to finish off the story of the whole occupation.
