Fractal food!

I've always wanted to try the fractal green cauliflowers that [livejournal.com profile] kalypso_v eats (and has an icon of) but I've never seen them here--till now. I have small romanesco broccoli, and they're almost too beautiful to eat.

But not quite.

This page has photos going down five levels (scroll down). How cool is that?

That is one ridiculous and delicious looking vegetable. I must have some!

They're nice raw too! :-D

I have to confess I don't think they taste quite as good as real cauliflower. But they are so pretty!

They are fascinatingly beautiful, and I like the taste better than broccoli's (even though they look like miniature trees). I shall have to try them with dip.

OOOh, that is so cool. I'd be tempted to draw a spiral in cheese sauce on them.

A logarithmic spiral!

Yes! Math food!

Dunno, I think they look like they have an Intelligence Rating and want to eat us.

I ate a vegetable mathematician!

I'm so jealous! Romanesco broccoli is on my "foods I especially want to try" list, but I've never seen one.

These are the first I've seen. I don't know if they were grown locally or imported because it was Greg who found them. I've often seen strange fruits and veges just the once so maybe I'll never have them again.

I wonder if they're hard to grow. Otherwise it seems to me growers here and there should find a ready market for them.

By fantastic coincidence, I FOUND SOME TODAY!!! I was so excited I gasped and was practically speachless, just pointing at them inarticulately so my husband wondered what the heck was wrong with me, until he realized what I was pointing at. I'm in Hawaii right now (normally I live in Connecticut) and the natural foods store guy said they were actually from California. Haven't eaten any yet! Must photograph it first!! :-)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-03-01 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
Yay! I hope you like it. I prefer it to broccoli and cauliflower. :-)

A beautiful superfood! Eat it with mackerel and an avocado and you will live forever.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-02-23 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Mackerel and avocado? I know they have the good oils in them, but I'm not that fond of mackerel. I like avocado though. Mmmm, guacamole.

[identity profile] toft-froggy.livejournal.com 2009-02-23 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
That's so cool!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-02-23 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
It is! Why don't people grow and sell more of them?

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2009-02-23 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
This is wonderful!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-02-23 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't it! Have you seen them there?

[identity profile] sallymn.livejournal.com 2009-02-23 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
They look wonderfully alien :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-02-23 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
They do! Or a mathematician's rendering of an ideal vegetable. :-)

Awesome!!!!!!!
