Hot

It's a long weekend in this city, and the weather's scorching hot and almost cloudless. Pity I feel so lousy. I started coughing at our dinner out in honour of the inauguration (and very nice it was: bubbly, grilled fish with risotto and a real salad--not that horrible stalky mesclun stuff you always seem to get now--followed by tiramisu) and assumed it was just stray smoke from the smokers sitting outside. However I've been coughing ever since, I feel feverish and crap, and I'm on antibiotics to stop it becoming bronchitis. WTH? It's summer! And what does that make it--a hot?

In better news, we saw Lost last night, two excellent episodes promising another great season. We've also found a place where we can hire S4 of Quantum Leap, and I've just found out about a new Canadian series called Being Erica which sounds very good--a mixture of QL and My Name is Earl by the sound of it, being a comedy-drama about a woman who has the chance to correct her past mistakes.

And now I think a cold ale before dinner (flounder fillets and leftover apple crumble from last night) would be a good idea.

The worst thing about summer colds is that chicken soup has no appeal in hot weather. I hope you feel better soon.

Oh, and I'm curious about what goes into a "real salad," apart from not mesclun.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
Lettuce (and whatever else)! It was a lovely crisp frilly lettuce plus tomatoes etc and a nice Italian dressing; so unusual! I hate the ubiquitous mesclun and its long stalks.

Bleah. After running the heatpump for several hours, the room it's in is still over 27C, and upstairs is 35C, not far off blood temperature. I wish we had a pool.

[identity profile] kindkit.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
I think you're being served inferior quality mesclun. The greens are supposed to be picked very young, so they shouldn't be stalky and tough.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 09:32 am (UTC)(link)
Their stalks are longer than their leaves! I wouldn't mind if it wasn't for that; I usually cut the bastards off, then eat what's left.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I have now belatedly looked up mesclun, and it means "mixture". I like those salads, and I've bought "mixed baby greens" for home. What I hate is the oval leaves with long stalks that my lunch salad yesterday solely consisted of, often mistakenly called mesclun on menus. What's that? Whatever it is, I suspect it's cheap and quickly grown.

*hugs*

Summer colds are the worst. I recommend juice pops and taking it easy.

Hope you feel better soon.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 07:01 am (UTC)(link)
If a juice pop is frozen juice, I had one already, and put several more in the freezer. :-)

Rats. I hope you feel better.

Hm I haven't heard of Being Erica yet. Of course, I rarely follow a series now. I usually wait until they're released on DVD.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
It's shown by CBC, and I think there have been four eps. I saw a good report on a comm, and like the premise.

Oh, dear. :( Well, I hope it works. It's now been two months since my last cold, and I'm still coughing up goo. Stupid lungs.

In better news, we saw Lost last night, two excellent episodes promising another great season.

I was almost a bit surprised by how very much I enjoyed those eps! I'm definitely looking forward to the rest of the season. Especially now that Hurley's assured me everything will make sense eventually. ;)

Oy. And that's what I'm afraid of; it happens to me too.

I'm thinking that they're now going to use the fluctuations in time to allow the Losties to visit that of the Black Rock and the two skeletons in the cave this season. Did you notice that Frogit was wearing... a red shirt?

Possible Lost Spoilers Be Here

I've been wondering, actually, whether the skeletons in the cave might be someone we know. Many brain-breaking things become possible once you throw in full-fledged, out-of-control time travel. :)

Did you notice that Frogit was wearing... a red shirt?

I think it's "Frogurt." And even without that particular fashion choice, that guy had "red shirt" written all over him, if only because he was far too annoying to live. :)

Ouch. Of course they could be! Did they have anything with them, like flying gear (because Amelia Earhart was mentioned at one stage)? OK, I'm kind of hoping that the woman might be Juliet, she annoys me so very much. Well, the actor does. I wonder if it's plastic surgery that keeps that faint superior smile on her face.

You know, I don't remember anything in particular, but then it was quite a while back...

OK, I'm kind of hoping that the woman might be Juliet, she annoys me so very much.

Heh. Yeah. She didn't annoy me in the most recent eps quite as much as she usually does, actually, but I certainly wouldn't shed any tears if she ended up skeletized in a cave. :)

I think it's time I went and perused the Lostpedia a little. There's so much twisty canon to remember. Heh, they say "We'll be your constant". :-D

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 10:53 am (UTC)(link)
I hope you soon feel a lot better.

I had to look mesclun up om Wikipedia, never having heard of it. I'm not sure if it's much less common here, goes under a different name or if I'm just ignorant.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Restaurants all seem to serve it here; maybe it's cheaper than lettuce. You can buy bags of it at the supermarket, but I don't. :-P [looks it up too] OK, it's meant to be a mixture. It always seems to be one particular oval leaf with a long stalk here, and that's what I dislike.

[identity profile] pinkdormouse.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 11:02 am (UTC)(link)
Feel better soon, you.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks. I'd like Nurse Annie to look after me!

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
So hot...I would just drop somwhere and let the sun kiss me...even reading you post is warming. It is warming always, but this one just radiates...
Sorry to hear about your problems. You are right, it is usually caused by a hot, if you drink something too cold very quickly.
Get well soon, you can“t stay ill in summer! :-)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
But drinking cold things makes me feel better! The doctor says I caught a virus somewhere, and I do remember having a stuffed-up nose a few days before. I thought it was just hay-fever.

[identity profile] merrymaia.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so sorry you're sick!! Summer colds are horrible. I hope you feel better soon!!

*Hugs*

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! :-)

[identity profile] ultrapsychobrat.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry you feel bad. The first time I had pneumonia--and the worst time--was in the middle of summer. I don't know how that happens, but it was horrible, since I hate hot weather, anyway. Hope your illness goes away quickly.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks; me too. I have a weak chest like our Vila, and once I have a cough, I get pretty sick. :-(

[identity profile] nautile26.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Argggh! Summer colds are the worst thing. You can't even enjoy pampering yourself by wrapping up in a warm rug and sipping hot lemon drinks. Hope you're soon over it.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
I know; I'm never sure if I have a fever or it's just hot, and it has been very, lately. I had some Lemsip a couple of days ago, but it was so grossly sweet, I could hardly force it down. And the packet says to sweeten it with honey if necessary. :-P

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
I hope you feel better soon... illness in the summer can feel worse since the heat doesn't help when you're already feverish. :(

*offers cool, healing drink*

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! [holds against forehead before sipping gratefully]

[identity profile] zoefruitcake.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 09:08 am (UTC)(link)
I hope you feel better soon x x I like the sound of Being Erica

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 09:51 am (UTC)(link)
I do too! I'll let you know what it's like. I need some more light-hearted shows like Earl to watch. :-)
