Other journals

Oh, wonderful, as Vila would say. I suppose LJ will be all right, but if it isn't, I'm only on Vox and GreatestJournal which seems to be closed anyway. Oh and Facebook which I don't really see the point of except for playing games like Lexulus (mutant Scrabble).

I've tried to get onto InsaneJournal, but its capcha isn't working (on repeated tries, for me, anyway), and Journalfen's bots are down. Oy.

So tell me, people, where are you?
[Poll #1326566]
I'd also like to know whether you can copy LJ entries to the other journal, or mirror.

Sorry; reposted because I had to fix the poll to have check boxed, not radio buttons. [headdesk]

[Edit] I managed to get onto InsaneJournal. If we all do end up there though, I'll be sorry to lose my heavily customised layout.

[Edit] And you can indeed copy your journal to another clone, but so far without meta data. I am still investigating.

[identity profile] kindkit.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I have an InsaneJournal, as I said in the poll, but I haven't posted there in a long time. The ugliness of the site got on my nerves, as did the fact that almost nobody I wanted to talk to was over there. And once it became clear that SUP's policies about things like explicit content were going to be reasonable, I didn't see the point.

Still, I'm glad to have it in case of emergency. And I hear you can copy your entire LJ onto IJ but I've never actually tried it myself.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know much about IJ, but I've seen several people say elsewhere that they're on it, and GJ is directing people there. One did say that you can copy LJ there, but of course you'd lose all the comments. :-( I do hope LJ keeps going as I have so much here, even though I have it archived on my HD.

I'm not sure why I can't get on. I hope it's just a bug and not them keeping some countries out.

[Edit] I just tried again and got in! :-)

[identity profile] kindkit.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Glad you were able to sign on! I would imagine that a lot of people are trying to join today, and that's probably the source of the difficulty.

[identity profile] sallymn.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I ook up a IJ and JF spot during the LAST big panic... and haven't really touched them since...

Mind you, being a Luddite, I've been downloading and saving my LJ page-by-page on my harddrive (HTML only except where there's lotsa pictures)

[identity profile] pet-lunatic.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
What's up with LJ? I live under a rock and do not know of this.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
They sacked about half their US staff (apparently without warning or severance pay) and say they're moving all development to Russia because of the economy. I'm just being a bit paranoid.

[identity profile] pet-lunatic.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Aha. That told me more than the various things I read, actually...right, I see. Well, hopefully it won't come to anything, though obviously jobs being lost is bad in itself.

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
It seems to be a lot of panic if LJ is just being restructured to transfer its development over to Russia. It may not be a sign of its imminent closure.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I know. I'm just being careful, and if there's a mass exodus, I'd like to be where my friends are.

I have an IJ that I always forget to update. I also have accouts on Facebook, MySpage, Yahoo and Blogger (none of which I'm actually using right now).

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds like me: I'm on a few, but mainly just as backup.

[identity profile] pet-lunatic.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, sorry, just looked it up for myself. Oh dear!

I crosspost (when I remember) using Semagic, and I have an explanation of how to set it up for posting to multiple journals here (http://kalypso-v.livejournal.com/155598.html).

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I tried to do that, but the username isn't modifiable in the server settings page. Oh well.
ext_6322: (Arthur whimper)

[identity profile] kalypso-v.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
How odd... it's still working for me, because I added another journal to the list for cross-posting today. Maybe you've a different version of Semagic? Mine is 1.7.0.9U.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I downloaded the new version, but it can't have installed properly because it showed the wrong version number. I did it again and it's fine now. :-P I've set it up as you described.

I have also found a cool tool called LJ-Sec (http://www.mp3vcr.com/ljsec/) which will copy one's LJ (all of it or selected entries) to other journal sites. I've installed it but have yet to test it. The instructions are here (http://brown-betty.livejournal.com/284083.html).

I really, really hope it won't be necessary to move though as I have so much history on LJ. I already have my LJ archived, but copying the fiction etc to another journal will at least mean that it's still on-line.

[identity profile] kalinda001.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm I'm not on any of those at the moment. I'll have to take a look. Is there on that works more like LJ? Which one has more people currently on it?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
I'm trying to find that out. GJ and IJ are like cut-down versions of LJ.

[identity profile] kalinda001.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
There seems to be a problem with GJ at the moment. I'm backing up everything using LJ-Sec to IJ. Fortunately I only have a year and a half to be backed up. But still...over 600 entries. It's going to take awhile.

I have used LJ-Export to back everything up to my harddrive. Tedious.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 09:08 am (UTC)(link)
I use LJArchive to back up to my hard drive; once you've done it the first time, every time you run it, it just does what's new. It also provides a really good seearch feature to lok through your archive file, whith loads up like an LJ. :-)

I just found LJ-Sec today and am going to try to copy my LJ to IJ too. I've had a look at your IJ (and friended you) and it looks great. I'll start working through mine. Did you do yours all at once, or month by month?

[personal profile] kerravonsen 2009-01-07 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't actually posted anything on IJ, I just got an IJ in the last panic (or was it the panic before?).

And I have no idea about LJ entries (see my backup hassles)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I already have my LJ archived, and have had for some time. I've also found a tool that will allow me to copy all or selected part of my LJ to GJ and IJ. Its main function is to do bulk updates of LJ (security, tags etc) which I don't dare do, but copying is fine.
kerravonsen: (Default)

[personal profile] kerravonsen 2009-01-07 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
I bet it only runs on MS-Windows, though. 8-(

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, probably.

[identity profile] mistraltoes.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
I've had a placeholder journal at GJ for a while, but I've just made one at IJ since I vaguely recall hearing that GJ was having some problems with its load.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently they're redirecting people to IJ, yes. That also seems to be where people are.

[identity profile] mistraltoes.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
Re your edit, can't you just copy your layout? Mine is not as customized as yours, certainly, but I just cut and pasted from LJ to IJ.

[identity profile] wolfma.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
I just got myself an Insane Journal, same username as here.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 09:08 am (UTC)(link)
Me too! :-) [friends you]

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
I don't have other journals, but this looks like a good time to check out the options... just in case. Meh.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 09:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but a real bummer. I have a permanent account here and loads of pictures etc. :-(

It looks as if IJ is the place to go. I will do a post on backing up and copying journals from here to there tomorrow.

[identity profile] miss-next.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 08:34 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh, you play Lexulous on Facebook, do you? Feel free to add me and challenge me to a game. I'm here (http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=778345456).

Currently refusing to run around and panic over LJ. I've been told there is a piece of software around that turns it into a book, so I may just do that, but I am not carting the whole kit and caboodle over to another journal site unless I know it's going down. I've got the best part of four years' entries on here!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 09:11 am (UTC)(link)
Cool! Will do, though remember I'm about 12 hours out from you, and not far off my bed time, so don't expect a fast response. :-)

I'm Nicola Mody by the way. :-)

[identity profile] hafren.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 11:17 am (UTC)(link)
Only Facebook (and FC of course). I can't be arsed setting up another journal if LJ goes, though I'll have to do somerhing about my real-name blog - blogspot or something, I suppose.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I love the interaction and discussion which you don't get on Facebook (which I must totally miss the point of) but I really, really hope we all stay here. I've invested a lot in this LJ: fiction, photos, artwork etc. If the worst happens though, I'd like an on-line backup (I already have a local one) for my short fiction so all I'd have to do is change the links on my site. Which would be a major job.

[identity profile] sorsha-khan.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Facebook is where I live most of the time. I do have myspace, but I never, ever, ever use it :-(

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I hardly ever use Facebook, except for games! Tell me how you find it useful? All I seem to get is pokes and chain letters (which stop with me) and I was about to deactivate when I found the Scrabulous had mutated and come back as Lexulous. I prefer an J post to a one-sentence twitter about what people are doing. I'm obviously missing something. :-P

[identity profile] sorsha-khan.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Facebook isn't much good for keeping in contact with people you're not close to in the first place. But for quick hellos when people are away (college, working abroad, etc) or for confidence-call style emails its great. I used it a lot for & now for my training - you can set up groups to chat or post work. You can keep groups 'secret' too, so they don't clutter up your profile (or, if you're feeling more nefarious...).
There's plenty I don't like about FB *doesn't mention the crappy new layout. Doesn't mention the crappy new layout. Doesn't...* but for casual keeping in contact its pretty good.

Rubbish for blogging. As in, complete & utter rubbish.

I guess the main reason I use FB though, is 'cos all my RL friends are on it and since most of them live 3hr drive from me, its handy to chat/share photos/make plans. Mostly I use FB for RL friends & LJ for 'net friends.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
OK, that makes sense. I just keep playing mutant Scrabble then. :-P

[identity profile] sorsha-khan.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I just keep playing mutant Scrabble then.

ROTL. Okay, I do know what you mean; its just I now have an image of zombies playing Scrabble & munching on brain-dips...

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmmmmmm tasty, tasty brains!

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Just Facebook at present, but as you indicate it's pretty useless for any sort of proper discussion. I think I'll wait as long as possible to start another journal, so I cab see where the majority of my flist finishes up. It's no ise finding a journal with fantastic software if none of one's friends are using it.

At the moment, InsaneJournal looks to be the favourite. I suppose there's a danger of their being overwhelmed by the number of ex-LJ users turning to them, and stopping the creation of new accounts.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm set up there and have found out how to 1) copy my LJ over and 2) post to multiple journals, so I might as well do that as a backup anyway. I'm already archiving to my HD.

Journalfen looks like another clone, but its bots were down last time I looked.
