Doctor Who Scarf: finished!

I finally finished my Doctor Who scarf yesterday with three days to spare (the knit-a-long finshes with the year). It's a modified pattern in which I used Fibonacci numbers, rounding down if they were odd, so all the stripes are 8, 12, 20, or 34 rows. This also made it the length I wanted, just to my knees. I'm enough of a klutz not to want anything more I can trip over.

The best range I could find didn't have a yellow, so I used orange. There's also a grey row in there which shouldn't be in an S14 scarf, but I like it.

The scarf over a railing. Do I have enough tassels? I suppose I could add some between the existing ones.

If I look a bit hunchbacked in these photos, it's because Greg took the photos from up the steps. :-P

A mosaic of me in scarf, me with hat and sonic screwdriver, and covering three fandoms in knit with Jayne hat (made by [livejournal.com profile] reapermum) and Blake's 7 teleport bracelet (pattern by [livejournal.com profile] wolfma). Bwahahaha!

I was going to wear my brown corduroy jacket with the hat, but it's summer here and I got hot enough already in the scarf. It took me a while to cool down after that. :-P

The bottom one is insanely complex. If you look at the in-progress photos he links to, I lost track of how many double pointed needles and bobbins of yarn were involved. I'd be dropping stuff all over.

I quite liked the cheater idea for a Moebius scarf- knit a flat rectangle in a reversible pattern and then give it a half twist when you're done and graft the ends together.

Well, that's how I made paper Moebius strips! The difference though is the proper way you really are knitting round the Moebuis so stripes etc are automatically symmetrical going out from the centre.

*nods* The proper way looks much better (I saw a lovely scarf/neckwarmer/hood)- but I couldn't wrap my mind around the instructions, I never got beyond the very basic knitter stage.

I came across a vid somewhere that made it clearer. I'm giving it a go one day.

Good luck! I got lost when they were explaining the casting-on. :^)

Cat Bordhi's vid about how to do that is here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LVnTda7F2V4) and very useful. Her site (http://www.catbordhi.com/) has a Moebius cat bed, but sadly no pattern.

[Edit] I don't know which style you use, but she uses continental knitting style. Using English knit stitch on the cast-ons would be just the same. :-)

I don't think my 'style' of casting-on has a name. Basically I just twist a loop of yarn by hand and put it on the needle. :^)

There are lots of methods of casting on including that one (I use long-tail myself). Sorry I wasn't clear. I meant what she does once she's cast on her whole circle and is knitting what she's cast on. From that point you use the knit stitch style you're familiar with. If you want garter, you have to change to purl when you hit the marker, and back again when you encounter it again. :-P

Ah. I see, you're working rows in a twisted round and you follow your normal pattern using the marker to judge when you're on the 'back'. I think. :^) I'm watching the video, and my brain keeps slipping out of comprehension mode. Maybe if I watch it several times it will sink in.

You've got it!

I've knitted the Moebius scarf (http://www.ravelry.com/projects/Sewandreap/moebius-scarf---the-original). The first few rows feel very tight when you're knitting them but it does become easier as it progresses. I found working in blocks of about 6 stitches knit, followed by 6 purl and reversing after a few rows worked well as a reversible pattern, but you do have to be sure that you have the correct number of stitches when you set up.
