They grow up so soon...

Jasmin is about four and a half months old--and has just gone on heat! This has never happened to a kitten of mine, and she's DRIVING ME SPARE! She's crying all the time, writhing all over the carpet--and me and the other cats if she can manage it--and sticking her bum and tail in the air. That sounds pretty conclusive to me, though I've never seen it before. Aaaargh!

How am I going to sleep tonight? And if course it would happen on a weekend--as cat emergencies always do--so I can't ring the vet till tomorrow, but I tell you, she's going in ASAP.

In other cat news, I have two Lonely Miaow foster homes to visit to see their (always neutered) cats. They were delighted that I wanted a 'teenager' rather than a small kitten, and apparently they have a selection of young cats from just older than Jasmin to 1-2 years old. One place has a little silver tabby. I always wanted a silver tabby. However I'll be going for personality and attraction to me, not looks.

Not sure whether this is the same with cats, but when I had a hamster on heat (bouncing around squeaking and waving its bum at me) scratching it on its back where it was waving it seemed to help. Mind you male cats have rather sharp penises so I am not sure how you'd sort that out.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 10:57 am (UTC)(link)
She likes being cuddled and stroked, but not for long. I suppose she's basically itchy all over, poor little thing. The yowling's really getting to me though. When I went out this morning, I could hear her in the house when I got in the car! You'd think she'd go hoarse.

[identity profile] miss-next.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 10:56 am (UTC)(link)
Ah yes. Minsky matured at a very similar age. He sat and yowled at the window for a while, eventually managed to get out, promptly disappeared for a couple of days, and returned with as smug an expression as I have ever seen on the face of a cat.

Over here they won't neuter a cat until it's six months old, early developer or no. Fortunately Minsky seemed to be quite content with his precocious exertions until that point. :-)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 11:00 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but I'll be the one left holding the kittens! :-(

I did ask the vet when I got her about when they did it as Tessa was done at five months, and they said six unless she came in heat. I know the Lonely Miaow cats are done younger so they can be homed, and that my vet does some of them, so I'll get her in. The question is when they'll have a space.

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 12:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I've heard of um, home remedies involving Q-tips or similar, but... I'm not sure I'd try it. Good luck. @_@

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't want to either. Besides, is the trigger for going off heat having sex or getting pregnant? The vet said the latter. Anyway, she's booked in for tomorrow. [wipes brow in relief]

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I've heard in cases where a cat was wanted for breeding later (good quality cat, but too young really to breed) a vet could use a sterile glass probe to trigger the 'ok, had sex, can relax now' mode.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
They didn't offer anything like that. I'm sure she'll be fine; she's quite big and tough now. :-)

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a temporary solution done only when you don't intend to neuter. I think not many vets do that procedure. Jasmin looks very well-grown and sturdy.

[identity profile] pet-lunatic.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 12:50 pm (UTC)(link)
:/ I hope all goes well with the kitty. Good luck! My in-laws' spaniel has been a bit...excited lately, in a similar sense. I hope they'll stud him.

Aww, silver tabby.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
My mother bred spaniels! She stopped though because she worried so much about where the puppies went if if they'd be happy, but the person with the stud doesn't have to.

I know! They're so beautiful! I'll have to see who likes me though.

[identity profile] pet-lunatic.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww. I love spaniels. I think I'd be worried, too. It's not like you can check up on them from time to time! My mum-in-law had to have one of hers rehomed because of behavioural problems. Hopefully it worked out okay for him though.

Good luck finding a match!

Oh, poor Jasmin, and poor you! I hope it can be dealt with soon.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Tomorrow! They said Friday and I said I couldn't hold out till then. I slept with earplugs but I can't wear them all day. Even now (almost 10am)I can feel feel my stress levels rising.

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Good luck, it usually only last a few days though.
Temperament is way much more important than looks. Apart from anything else you want one as playful as Jasmin or it sort of defeats the object of the exercise.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I rang the vet and they said it can last two weeks or till she gets pregnant. They said they would take her Friday and I said I couldn't last till then, so she's being done tomorrow.

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 02:13 pm (UTC)(link)
They're spaying kittens *ridiculously* young over here when you adopt one from a shelter (so few people spayed them after adoption that they gave up on making you promise to do it). They say it does no harm, but I think it's best to wait til six months old or first heat.

Cats with Siamese-type genetics seem to go into heat much younger from what I've heard.

I can only recommend you try to put Jasmin in a room as far from your bedroom as possible tonight- and if you can sleep with earplugs that might help.

[identity profile] wolfma.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Not only are they spaying them young, but my vet told us that they younger you spay the cheaper the procedure is.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I slept OK with earplugs (which I use anyway with Greg, but I used a new pair for maximum effect.

They're doing her tomorrow. She's quite a big kitten anyway (compared to Claudia and Tessa) so I'm sure she'll be fine.

I know the Lonely Miaow kittens are done younger because they only let then go after desexing and I think they go at 3 months or so; maybe younger. And I know my vet does some of them. :-) People seem to want tiny kittens, but I'd prefer one a bit older than Jasmin as she needs a stabilising influence.

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
They're getting really far too young in my area, I think. I saw a puppy at the vets for a checkup after the spaying and they said it was a MONTH old.

Spaying that young effects on the bone growth if nothing else (the bones grow longer and 'leggier' when they haven't hormones to counteract it- I wonder if it also makes them liable to fracture?). Six to eight weeks is common. I think four months is quite reasonable in a well-grown kitten even if it hasn't come into heat, because they'll have achieved much of their adult bone structure.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
That is young. Apparently the SPCA and other places here do it when they're over 1.2kg, but the vet prefers six months unless they've come into heat earlier. Jasmin's a fairly large kitten now and she's only two weeks off the five months I had the others done at, so I'm not worried. She's a healthy, robust little thing.

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I prefer 4 months myself simply because in my climate they seem to mature sooner. Definitely if a cat is mature enough to come into heat, it's time to do it. Siamese *can* stay in heat for a month or more (my grandmother had a cat that I swear was only out of heat when pregnant or nursing).

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. How could she stand it? I'm now wondering if a lot of abandoned cats are thrown out before they get pregnant, just because of the yowling. A lot of the Lonely Miaow ones are found with litters, but I suppose that's also going to hepen. Why the hell don't people neuter their cats?

Patsy has a cat that's nursing (all those little brown babies I posted a photo of)--and still on heat. Apparently it's turned her milk or something because Patsy said the kittens have become bad-tempered.

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no idea how she stood it- she lived in a 3 room apartment and there was no getting away from the sound- heck we could hear it down the block when we visited!

I'm sure a lot of people do dump cats when they begin behaving sexually- no longer cute fluffball, but annoying creature with biological drives. *BOOT*

I wonder if the cat on heat is now simply producing less milk and the kittens are hungry?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Or they don't realise what's going on and think their kitten's too noisy and annoying to keep. [would like to kick them]

Patsy's been breeding cats for years; I'm sure she'd know. She said "Her milk's turned". Maybe they're getting nutrution, but the milk's sour or something. It could be a way of making the kittens leave in the wild.

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Poor kitties, all they have to drink is sour milk. :^P

[identity profile] san-valentine.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Skiffle was the first un-neutered female I'd had, and it took me a few hours to realize what was happening the first time she came in to heat. I wondered why she was making such a row.
I'd already planned to have her done anyway - indeed may already have made the appointment - and the yowling, if nothing else, reinforced my decision.

Diesel's the only female I've had from a kitten, and she was done around six months, and hadn't come into season then. It's noticable that Skiffle displays affection by rolling on the floor far more than any of my neutered-before-maturity females have done.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I've had all my kittens neutered before they came in heat--until now--and two of them rolled on the floor. One was a danger to herself and others as she'd throw herself in front of people's feet, but luckily no one got hurt. I've even seen her writhe with joy--in a puddle--at my coming home. They were all done around 4-5 months, so Jasmin's not far off.

And yes, it's the yowling that's driving me round the twist. And I'm told it would keep up for two weeks, or till she's pregnant. I just need to hold out for today though; she's going in tomorrow.

[identity profile] wolfma.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
That is wise, choosing on basis of personality. We've had strays we thought were quite homely at first fill out and become very pretty after living with us for a while.

We've raised generations of cats, and I prefer the older ones to the kittens despite the cuteness factor.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I chose Claudia on personality--her sister was a lot prettier--but she became a beautiful cat. She was known as the kitten from outer space though; I should find, scan, and post pictures.

I don't get people loving kittens and not the cats they grow into. My kittens were cute, but I really loved the adults for their personalities and little quirks they develop.

[identity profile] wolfma.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Adult cats know you, too, unlike kittens. They calm down with age and become companions.

My roommate had a Calico Van with huge eyes we called Alien Kitty--and her name was Cally!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Awwww. That's the third Cally cat I've heard of, but I think it's always short for calico. My sister had a cameo-coloured cat called Cammie (one of my rescues).

[identity profile] zoefruitcake.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Maddie was 6 months when we had her 'done' and they said she was coming into heat at the time. Which apparently made it slightly more difficult.

Kittens are lovely, but so are young cat. Actually so are older cats too ;0)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
They're doing her tomorrow!

Exactly! :-)

[identity profile] crycraven.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Good luck with Jasmine, I hope she doesn't get out. And hooray for shelter cats, I always get my pets from homes. x

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I've had three strays and a rescue, and found homes for seven more. Greg and I fell for Burmese because a friend had them and got two when my tabbies died (two years apart). He wanted one more, but from now on it will be from the Lonely Miaow. I'm afraid to go to the SPCA because there'd be too many to choose from and I'd want to take several home. And I'd cry.

This icon looks just like Sam, a tabby kitten that followed my parents when they were visiting friends in another city. He followed down the street to their house, crying piteously, and when they left an hour or more later, he was still there, waiting. My father said, "Persistence must be rewarded" and brought him home, a skinny little thing who grew into a magnificent cat. I adored him; he was so funny and playful.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, that is young! And here I was astonished when it happened to Happiness at, I don't know, six months or so, I think. She made eeriest sounds I have ever heard come out of a cat, before or since. Fortunately the vet was able to take care of her right away. Hope that happens for Jasmin, too!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Jasmin's yowling now, but slighly muffled by being two rooms away. I couldn't stand her in here, plus attacking the new blinds in an attempt to get out. Man, there's no way I'd last till Friday which is what they suggested, but luckily they could take her tomorrow. Yay!

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, glad to hear it! Tomorrow sounds like it will be quite long enough.

[identity profile] kalinda001.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw poor Jasmin and poor you. Hope it doesn't last too long.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently up to two weeks or pregenancy--but she's being done tomorrow. [is relieved but still stressed by the yowling and attempts to get out]

[identity profile] merrymaia.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Eek! Poor Jasmin, and poor you!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
She's going in tomorrow! I am so relieved.

[identity profile] merrymaia.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay!

I hope everything goes well tomorrow and that Jasmin has an easy recovery!

*Hugs*

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I'm sure she will. They have much better anaesthetics now which they recover from much faster.
