Work (a bit anyway)

I'm working election day here this weekend, which is a long day but rather fun--I've done it before when I was a student. I've just found out that I'll also be working for about 8 days afterwards, helping with the official count, special votes, and other stuff. Yay, because I so need the money, even though it's crap pay.

I'll probably have to get a bus into Newmarket, where for some strange reason the Tamaki electorate office is; bum. I sometimes feel sick on buses, but OTOH driving in will take so long, and I'm not sure where I could park. I considered taking my scarf to knit on the bus, but those seats are pretty cramped (if I even get one) and I'll just annoy whoever's next to me. Maybe Greg can drop me off in the mornings; he works fairly close.

I'm also a bit worried about Jasmin, who will have to be left on her own here as she's not ready to be allowed outside yet, and I'm not sure Claudia's ready to be locked in with her to keep her company. They lick each other on our laps, but when Jasmin's in a crazy mood, she won't stop attacking poor Claudia who ends up going spare and having to be let out.

I hope it goes well for you. The Tamaki office in Newmarket? *scratches head*

Yeah, in a really crappy old building (the old TAFE one) by the Gillies Ave on-ramp, with no parking. Why isn't it out here, I ask.

Heh, I saw Rodney Hide stumping in Newmarket, just like last elections, and I've seen him in (and virtually out of) his illustrated car a few times, but I never have my camera. At least that guy has personality. :-)

You gotta love beaucracy...

The only politician I've been (un)lucky to see recently was Roger Douglas in Mt Eden. *cries*

For which you get a round of applause :-)

Work is good! Good timing too, coming up to the silly season. But when will you vote? LOL Do you have compulsory voting in NZ like we do?

Maybe you'll have to lock Jasmin in a separate room?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-11-06 07:15 am (UTC)(link)
We'll be given time to vote. We all have to register, but it's not compulsory to vote.

I can lock Jasmin in the bedroom and en suite; I'm just worried about her being lonely. She's so gregarious; she loves being around us and the cats.

[identity profile] thetisonline.livejournal.com 2008-11-06 09:52 am (UTC)(link)
She'll be clingy when you get home every evening.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-11-06 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Like Claudia was when she was the only cat for a few months! She'd cling to me for about half an hour, purring ecstatically.

I used to work with someone who did the election shift, and he said it was really interesting, but I don't think he did it for so many days.

I can understand you worrying about Jasmin, but I'm sure she'll be fine

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-11-06 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
It's one day of voting, and the rest is processing specials and counting and checking up that no one voted twice. :-)

She'll be lonely though. I've been around most of the time. :-P

If I weren't involved in campaigning, I think I might like to volunteer for the count. It looks like my sort of fun, as well as being useful to the city.

Could you try alternating Jasmin alone/Jasmin with Claudia, and see who looks most shell-shocked at the end of the day?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-11-06 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I know how voting is handled, having done it before, but I'll be interested to see the behind-the-scenes work afterwards.

Greg says he can work from home for part of the day, and she's fine left on her own for a few hours. I'd have to give them both the run of the house--Jasmin alone in the bedroom/en suite is fine, but Claudia would hate it--and then I can't set the alarm for motion sensing.

It'll be fine.

Kity craziness - I hope you don;t have leather furniture...

And congrats on the job! Don't get bribed into fiddling the result. x

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-11-06 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
We don't. The living room suite has a woven covering though and they like to scratch at it. :-( The one in the TV room is velour and they leave that alone which is a relief as they're there more often.

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2008-11-06 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yes, these everyday problems ...Finally you find out that getting sick on a bus is not the worst but the cats ...what if...I should...damn, anything might happen...
I do hope all will be right - Jasmin and Claudia will sort it out.
But I would be equally concerned!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-11-06 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the safest is what I've done so far when out, which is leaving Jasmin upstairs. She'll probably just go to sleep from boredom. :-)

It's good you're helping the democratic process. After the US elections, it does give one hope of a sort.

The kitties haven't quite worked out who's the boss yet?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-11-06 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately we're likely to go the other way: conservative.

Jasmin likes Claudia and just wants to play. She gets annoyed, but Jasmin knows it's all growl. It's odd though: Vic's a bit nervous of her, yet she's cautious of him too, and those two could really have fun playing.
