When protons go bad

So they turned the Big Hardon Banger Large Hadron Collider on yesterday (by my time) and ran protons round it, and people are relieved nothing happened. I don't think there's any cause to worry as those collisions happen anyway, but there're not actually going to be any till next month (see the Wiki).
"The first high-energy collisions are planned to take place after the LHC is officially unveiled on 21 October 2008."

Have you see the LHC Google logo today? Mine's still showing up. :-)

Yes it's up on mine, I accidentally clicked on the illustration when I was looking at it and it took me to the Google search results for the great Hadron Converter. Do you know if it does that for all of Google's special logos?

It does, yes! Very useful, that, for when I can't figure out what it's about.

Thanks for pointing it out - it's neat. I've a friend who's just finishing his PhD in eperimental physics and he's just loving this. *pets him*

I have a degree in physics too, but just a BSc. My cousin has a PhD in it, but I haven't seen him in a while.

So we'll be destroyed next month. Mmm... I should really try to get some fic done before then. :^)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-09-11 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
A deadline in more than one sense? ;-)

I have to get my charity one done by the end of this month, and the finishathon one started and finished by about then in October. :-)

It would be a pity to leave things undone at the end of the world. :^)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-09-11 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Well anyone reading my Lynx series will be left hanging. :-P

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2008-09-11 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Well you can post a hypothetical ending -- 'In case the world ends next month, the Lynx series ends with A) the bad guys all punished B) the good guys all rewarded and C) Kittens and hot cocoa all around.'

Still on mine.

And yes, this whole "ending the universe" thing is silly to anyone who's done, oh, five minutes worth of research on the subject.

...4.99 too bloody many for 89% of the internet. >:P

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-09-11 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Ah well. I read that the Proctor and Gamble Satanism rumour is still going strong (I thought that died with my childhood) so it just seems people like that sort of thing better than reality.

For the worst understanding of simple science (not to mention grammar and spelling) see the crazy rainbow lady (http://san-valentine.livejournal.com/87354.html) a friend linked to.

O_O

...OH my god. That... I can't believe that. What the hell is wrong with her? That has to be a parody. She... she never saw sprinkler rainbows as a kid? I.. I... *brain EXPLODES*

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-09-11 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. Apparently she's done a lot of conspiracy vids but I don't want to see them.

Have you see the LHC Google logo today?

I hadn't, but I just went and looked. Ha! That's awesome. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-09-11 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't it! I think that's the first science one I've seen.

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2008-09-11 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
Where would I be without you? Apart from some hysterical admirors of Dan Brown´m s Angels and Demons, no one cares about CERN and hadrons or other particles here.
Hmmm.:-)
I love your comments!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-09-11 07:01 am (UTC)(link)
You mean the Dan Brown readers were expecting the end of the world? Oy.

I wouldn't mind betting my sister is too.

As I have said.*Grins*
