Day 13 - Gan

Today's entry for the [livejournal.com profile] naarmamo National Art Making Month challenge is another Blake's 7 portrait.

Gan

Poor Gan: not the most popular of characters. It was even hard finding a decent screencap of him to work from. I liked this one but it was rather an odd angle and he has such deep-set eyes.

My NaArMaMo 2008 Gallery is here.

Awww, you've managed to make him look quite pretty. <3 I love Gan.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-13 10:41 am (UTC)(link)
He has surprisingly delicate eyebrows which actually look plucked (though I'm sure he didn't). Heh, in my fanon he looks after his nails well because it's a sign on Zephron of rising above farming, so maybe they also do their eyebrows and always remove facial hair so as not to look like sons of soil and toil. ;-)

He looks so young there, poor Gan he didn't get a chance to age like the others.

I think he started off a lot older though. I'd say he was over 40, but yes, I missed him and I'm sure Vila did too.

Oh, I think this captures him really well.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-13 10:59 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I wanted to give him a nice portrait, poor guy.

Oh nice!!!

And I am sooo with you on the screencap thing - even when I try to make my own to make icons, he just doesn't do the pretty the way Avon does.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-13 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
And so many have him pulling faces. I liked this one because he looks dignified, and also large because we're looking up at him.

I have a similar problem with finding happy or at least not-miserable Vila caps.

That is an awkward angle to work from, but you've done a good job. I like the detailing on the yellow stripes. Subtle but effective

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-13 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked the angle because it gives an impression of his size. He has gold braid on his jerkin, and I tried a few other methods but this was the one that look best, even though the brais isn't that sort.

His mouth is beautiful!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-13 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? Thanks!

I really like this. Gan is so often overlooked. You've captured his strenth and quiet dignity here as well as some sadness.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-13 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I must have added the sadness, though I wanted the dignity. It was based on a screencap of him on guard where he looked more alert than sad. Maybe my own feelings are coming through.

He looks very thoughtfull, there.

What screen-cap did you use?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-13 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
This one (http://www.framecaplib.com/b7lib/html/chars/images/shadow/alone/shado055.htm?subj=16). I had to ignore the gun and I also changed his shoulder position to display his clothes.

Well that definitely explains why he's so thoughtful looking... XD

I think it works really well.

And I like Gan, I really do. They just didn't ever give us enough info about him. I keep wanting to write fic about him, then realising I'd have to invent entire worlds and such to give him a backstory, which I'm just too lazy to do. He was such a sweetie.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-13 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I like him too. I used the BBC publicity info which had him coming from Zephron, and I made him an escapee from a farming background who got a job travelling and selling agricultural machinery; he and his beloved Lubov (whose name he never says any more) were caught on Earth during a riot. Very few of the characters have any canon backstory, so I built up my own to form my own fictional canon. :-)
