Day 2 - Bromeliad

Today's entry for the [livejournal.com profile] naarmamo National Art Making Month challenge is an attempt to do a poster-style picture, inspired by the WPA posters I discovered recently. This is one of my pot plants, a bromeliad, in fact the plant I was given when I left my last job.

Bromeliad

It was an experiment: no outlines and a limited palette, though I ended up using 7 colours (8 with the shadow) when I only wanted to use 5.

My NaArMaMo 2008 Gallery is here.

You've got a real talent for these sorts of pictures. I really like it.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-02 10:31 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! It's too detailed to be properly postery, but I'm pleased with it as a picture anyway.

[identity profile] san-valentine.livejournal.com 2008-08-02 10:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I like that. The burst of leaves from the pot is well done and I like your use of colours. I'm fond of the WPA style too, so thanks for the link to those posters. You can see I put them to use too.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-02 10:32 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you!

Ooh, that's a good one! I didn't do as many as I could have; I was spoilt for choice.

That's lovely, really striking :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-02 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! :-D I'm going to try some different styles this month.

[identity profile] kalinda001.livejournal.com 2008-08-02 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
I love the detail. It's striking and grabs your attention, which is what you would want with a poster.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-02 10:59 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I suppose it could advertise a flower show. :-P

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2008-08-02 10:53 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh how vibrant. I love the textured look to it too.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-02 11:06 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! Drawing things other than people is good for me, though I suspect that B7 will make up about half of my subjects. :-P

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2008-08-02 11:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'm shooting to do all Avon and Vila for the challenge, although I may draw some other B7 characters as well. We'll see. XD

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-02 11:14 am (UTC)(link)
I'm doing a Cally in the same style as the other ones I did for [livejournal.com profile] kalinda001, so I thought I'd go ahead and do the complete gallery. It'll use about almost half the days and I was casting about for topics last year.

Are you cross-posting to [livejournal.com profile] b7fanart too? I am; might as well.

I should go to bed now. I have a rehearsal tomorrow and some other stuff I have to do; eep.

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com 2008-08-02 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I probably will. I didn't crosspost the one frame of animation 'cause it seems so tiny and pointless and I'll crosspost the completed piece when I finish, but other stuff I will.

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2008-08-02 11:10 am (UTC)(link)
Very nice... the flower looks well done. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-02 11:16 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! There are about four of them (you can see three), very hard and shiny and flat. Greg thought they were artificial when I brought the plant home. :-)

[identity profile] sallymn.livejournal.com 2008-08-02 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
Seemingly simple and beautifully effective.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! :-)

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2008-08-02 11:28 am (UTC)(link)
Some plants can look a bit artificial, especially some from the cactus-family. I won't talk about a previous neighbour who would have artificial flowers in her window boxes... :-p

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Eep! I have two cacti that do look rather artificial and are in the sense that the red part was grafted onto the cactus. I might draw one of them.

I worked with a guy who decided to have all artificial plants at home because they were easier than real ones, and brought all his pleants in to work to sell. What a dork.

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
I look forward to a cactus drawing. :)

Artificial plants, ugh. They get dusty and then they really do look fake...

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
Real ones can go dusty too if they have big shiny leaves. Sometimes I put mine out in the rain for a good wash (good for them!), but it's been too windy lately.

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2008-08-02 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Extremely effective. The composition and colors really grab the attention.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! :-D

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2008-08-02 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, very cool! Pretty plant, very nicely rendered.

(But, heh. Is it culturally insensitive of me that the phrase "pot plant" always makes me chuckle, because it means something completely different and much more entertaining here? :))

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
That can be grown in pots too. :-) A previous neighbour did that (in big terracotta ones). But yeah, pot plants are, well, plants in pots here.

[identity profile] glitterboy1.livejournal.com 2008-08-02 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I like that, especially the way you've caught the leaves.

I always think that 'Bromeliad' should be some fantasy epic by David Eddings.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you!

Hee! It would be set on a jungle planet with lots of sword fights and magical duels while swinging on lianas in the rain forest. :-P

[identity profile] linda-joyce.livejournal.com 2008-08-02 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
That is lovely, I was considering doing botanic type pictures my self, mine will be far less impressive though. But if you don't try you never learn.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
True! It's a chance to have a go at different subjects and techniques. :-)

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2008-08-02 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Very much like those WPA posters.
Wrong leaves for a "pot" plant though! (sorry!)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't have the other kind to draw! And these leaves are simpler.

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2008-08-02 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah dear, this is lovely - I like bromelias! Just won-der-ful!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! They grow well here because it doesn't get very cold. Just extremely wet.

[identity profile] vjezkova.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, I wish I had a winter garden in my house! I have got Echmaea - bromelia with a gorgeous pink and scarlet and indigo blossom. I take the new plants from the mother plant and now I have six of them and all six will produce new ones and...etc.Also Tillandsia does it. My poor family are so tolerant!!!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
I have a plant like that! They all descend from one I bought when I first started working here. I have to give them away each year.

[identity profile] crycraven.livejournal.com 2008-08-02 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty pretty. Is it done on computer, on your tablet?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, I'm a lazy tart. It's so easy to correct mistakes on the tablet too.

[identity profile] daiseechain.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 10:25 am (UTC)(link)
Very nice. I like the limited colour use - makes for a striking picture.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 10:33 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! It's a technique I'll have to play with more.

[identity profile] jecono.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 10:30 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, it's August again, that time of year when I get so envious of your talent! :) Very nice, Nico, I also love the texture of the leaves!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 10:35 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! August's the wrong month for art here though. I have to draw from imagination or use things in the house because it's too grey and wintry and dark outside. :-(
