Doctor Who: The Stolen Earth

I have to post about this one because it too was excellent.

I was disappointed that it was Daleks again, but it was a great ride anyway.

Harriet is the hero. I love her. We didn't actually see her die either, though the Daleks did say "exterminate". Perhaps she has something else up her sleeve from the Copper Foundation. We can hope.

I love Wilfred too. Good idea about the paint gun; pity it didn't work.

I admit to shouting "Dalek Caaaaaaaaan!"

What the hell does the gratuitous Dawkins know about astronomy though?

The Rose and Doctor reunion scene was so bad, I have to think it was deliberate parody. I was yelling "Heeeathcliiiff! Caaathyyy!" and cheered the Dalek when it intervened. Sorry. I was actually glad to see Rose though and was rather sorry for her when she was excluded from the group chat. But seeing everyone else? That is just beyond cool.

I knew who Davros was because I have seen pictures. I am wondering if there is Master-ness in the next ep because of the dadadada dadadada beat in a couple of places, particularly including Davros's metal hand. Probably coincidence though. And does Dalek Caan's rescue of Davros mean that there is hope for the Doctor doing something about Gallifrey?

As for the incipient regeneration, I thought they weren't having DW next year because of Tennant being with the RSC. If they're going ahead with someone else, kudos to RTD et al for keeping that completely secret. However I think the Hand in the Jar will influence the regeneration somehow, but if so, it seems a bit sad for the Doctor to lose a life without gaining a new body when he has so few left.

And what is Donna? The younger Shadow Proclamation woman said that she was 'something new'. Thought: was it her hand that picked up the Master's ring? Surely not. I like my Donna and Harriet--I know some people think it might have been her--the way they are: humans at their best. Anyway, Harriet doesn't wear red nail polish and Donna is unlikely to have been outside London. Still, who knows what will happen next week? I can't wait! I think this is the best finale yet.

These Daleks seem to have more personality than most. Favourite quotes:
"We hate UNIT."
"Yes. We know who you are."
"Daleks do not accept apologies" (the winner)

Favourite comment from a viewer, [livejournal.com profile] kalypso_v:
"The Daleks now insist on a massed choir to accompany all their invasions, and they don't sing. So they've got to capture loads of potential singers and test their voices to find the perfect backing group." Bwahahaha!

Please do not spoil me with rumours or leaks about the next episode or season.

I knew who Davros was because I have seen pictures.

I wholeheartedly recommend watching "Genesis of the Daleks," by the way, not just because it gives you the backstory on Davros, but because it's an excellent episode... and one with a lot of implications for the whole Time War thing.

[identity profile] jthijsen.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
Seconded. I've watched it recently (which is why I recognised Davros) and it's a bloody great story, one in which the Doctor doesn't get absolutely everything right for a change.

About the regeneration: I really don't think it matters one whit to the Doctor that he doesn't get a new body, in fact I think that might come as a bit of a relief. However, the PTB would have to be out of their minds to throw away a possible actor change if they didn't absolutely have to.

Also, I need a good Doctor icon. Don't have a single one just yet.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's really what I meant: a regeneration without an actor change shortens our future DW viewing pleasure.

I have that ep on my list. I'll have to see if I can buy it.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
I am absolutely certain, though, that if and when we hit regeneration #13, they'll find a way to get around it. There's canonical precedent for it, even.

I think they'll make a big thing of THIS IS HIS LAST BODY! And make sure the companion du jour knows all about it, so they panic especially hard every time he's in danger: "Be careful, Doctor, you know you can't take any chances now!" And then get round it at the last possible moment, of course.

[identity profile] richenda.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm wondering if the jenny thing - all the speculating about whether or not she'd regenerated - was a foreshadowing of this

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't be surprised if she turns up. Plus, they could really kill the Doctor because the have The Hand In The Jar.

[identity profile] richenda.livejournal.com 2008-07-01 07:33 am (UTC)(link)
Nor I.
It's quite amusing that the regeneration thing - which originated to enable people to move on - now becomes a tool for people to stay!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
I have "Genesis of the Daleks" on my list of old Who to watch. I should see if I can get hold of some of those.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
It is out on DVD, handily enough.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
Guess what! I thought I'd check my large pile of unwatched DVDs in case that was one of the DW serials I'd picked up a few months back, though I wasn't very hopeful--and it is!

I know what we'll be watching tonight!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
It will fill one of the many gaps in my knowledge.

Do you have some good UNIT recs? From what I've heard of the Brig, I know I'd love him.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm. Off the top of my head, the first UNIT-era story I want to recommend is "The Mind of Evil." Poor Sgt. Benton doesn't get a very good showing in it, but it's got some good Brigadier moments, and is otherwise just all-around fantastic, not to mention showcasing the Delgado Master at his best. But it's not out on DVD, alas.

For an aging but utterly marvelous Brigadier, I'd recommend the 7th Doctor story "Battlefield"... but it doesn't seem to be out yet either.

So, let's see... Maybe "The Silurians?" It's a bit slow-moving as I recall -- not surprising, as it's 7 episodes -- and I imagine the story elements that made it something of a favorite of mine way back when are much less surprising or impressive by new series standards. But I'm sure it's worth watching, regardless, and as a bonus, it also features a somewhat young Paul Darrrow. And the ending... could provoke a few interesting compare-and-contrast discussions with certain new series issues, actually.

Then again, it might not be a bad idea to start with "The Spearhead from Space," Pertwee's first story and the start of the UNIT era of Who (although not their first introduction). That would have the added benefit of giving you a bit of backstory on the Autons, which you'll already be familiar with from "Rose," although I suppose it has the disadvantage of following on from "The War Games" in ways that might be confusing if you don't know the details of the Two-Three regeneration.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I've heard a lot about "The Silurians" and will keep an eye out for it. I know I haven't got that one because of the PD connection which I'd notice. :-)

Oddly enough, [livejournal.com profile] snowgrouse is watching "The War Games" right now.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
He's not in it all that much, but I'm sure you'll notice him when you see him.

"The War Games" is interesting, but it's really, really slow.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
I have seen screencaps!

Yeah, it's like 10 parts or something. :-P

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 10:13 am (UTC)(link)
And I have now seen part 1. SPACE NAZIS!

I have also seen a Quantum Leap ep with baby Tom Paris and Bree Van De Kamp in it! :-D

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. The Daleks = SPACE NAZIS! metaphor has never exactly been subtle... :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
And the chap with the glasses, iron cross, and almost-SS insignia on his collar! There are also mutos. You can tell this is a Terry Nation script. :-)

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, yes. It's Terry Nation doing what he does best, really. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
And David Maloney directing!

I wonder how the Kaleds reproduce. There are no woman. Perhaps they're all clones.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
They've probably got all the women locked up in the basement with the giant mutant clams or something. :P

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-07-01 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
You forgot the adjective "space". ;-) It's also strange that they accept Davros when they're so paranoid about mutos.

[identity profile] zoefruitcake.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 09:08 am (UTC)(link)
I love Wilfred too, but then I've always had a really soft spot for Bernard Cribbins ;0)

I didn't like Rose being excluded from the chat either, but I guess they were keeping her hidden until the end. Plenty of laughs, references and I can't wait until next weekend

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 10:09 am (UTC)(link)
It was so great seeing them all. I hope next week's as good as the last two.

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 09:30 am (UTC)(link)
What the hell does the gratuitous Dawkins know about astronomy though?

Yes, I was wondering that. I suppose it's not unlikely that the fictional BBC would just use the bst-known scientist that they could get hold of, though. Which may well be what happened with the real RTD making the choice. Or perhaps thwy tried for Stephen Hawking and he wasn't available.

At least Dawkins has a DW connection. He is (or at least was - I don't know if they're still together) married to Lalla Ward.

There's no regular series next year, and the unavailability of DT was given as a reason for that (I'm not sure that it was given as the only one). They are doing three specials next year, though.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 10:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I heard he married Ward. I suppose they ran out of Doctor actor's children but that still doesn't excuse it. >:|

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I was wondering that. I suppose it's not unlikely that the fictional BBC would just use the bst-known scientist that they could get hold of, though.

If the UK media is anything like the US media, this is all too plausible, really.

Although it would have been way more fun to see him speculating on the evolutionary history of the Daleks or something. Heh. Maybe he could have explained to Davros why his theory that he was accelerating the evolution of the Kaled race was full of crap. :)

Or perhaps thwy tried for Stephen Hawking and he wasn't available.

I think he just likes Dawkins, plus his Who connection a) is cool, and b) probably rendered him more likely to say yes. :)

[identity profile] the-summoning-d.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved this ep :D Wonderful stuff. Donna's grandad is fantastic! I started to tear up when all the companions realise it's the Daleks attacking them: Sarah Jane afraid for her son, and Jack telling Gwen and Ianto he can't save them.

Ooo, who do you think's going to die?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, the hints all season inply Donna. But the other hints that she's Something More or New may mean it's not just death.

I hope Wilfred survives, but he may not want to without Donna. Living with her mother must be a nightmare, though there's the allotment and his telescope.

I can't see them killing off any more of Torchwood or Sarah Jane and her son, as they need them for their series. I expect a big headcount otherwise though. It's traditional for these finales now. ;-)

[identity profile] the-summoning-d.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't actually seen season 4 - I just watched the finale because I knew that if I put it off I'd get epicly spoilered sooner or later. My immediate thought was Donna, or maybe Rose, but then the 'everlasting death' bit started niggling at me, and my minds sort of went: "Why 'everlasting'? As opposed to 'temporary'? o.0 Eep, are they going to kill Jack?"

I don't know. Can't wait for Saturday ^^

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
But if they kill Jack, there won't be a Face of Boe! Or Torchwood, with just Gwen and Ianto left. Yeah, 'everlasting death' must apply to someone who doesn't stay dead though, so it must be a time lord or a time lord's offspring. Interesting.

[Edit] You know, they could really kill the Doctor because they have The Hand In The Jar. :-P

[identity profile] the-summoning-d.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
*scratches head* Oh yeah. I hadn't thought of that. Mind you, my brain is rarely logical when faced with the prospect of characters I love dying.

Hmm...you make a fair point.
Damn, the suspense is killing me! Roll on the weekend!

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2008-06-30 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
One common speculation is that it actually refers to the TARDIS. She does qualify for the "most faithful companion" title, after all...

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-07-01 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I thought of that. But nooooo, that'll be the end of Doctor Who, or at least anywhere but present day London. :-(

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2008-07-01 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Well, even if that's what was meant, that doesn't imply that it will actually happen. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-07-01 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
True. I admit to hoping we'll get more location, time, and alien variety in the 2010 season.
