Babylon 5 speculations

Another ep of B5 (Mind War) and ooh, it's moving right along. Bester has already appeared, Sakai encountered an ancient being, and we've learned more about the Psi Corps. And everyone is more than they seem. But of course! :-)

Knowing what will happen makes me wonder how it would have been had some of the actors not left.

The appropriately named Talia Winters (so glacial and 40s) was obviously intended to be more. Ironheart has given her telekinesis--which I don't remember her using again--and I'm sure she was meant to have the story line Lyta Alexander took over. To give Lyta the skills that Ironheart gave Talia, she had to encounter the Vorlons. I'm sorry about what JMS did to Talia's character, but I'd have been sorrier if he'd done it to Ivanova's as he'd apparently originally planned.

Had JMS not lost his first JS (yes, we noticed) when Michael O'Hare left, Catherine Sakai, the explorer and planetary surveyor would have been the one to discover the Shadows and be suborned by them, but instead he had to create Anna for that role. I heard she was named for Avon's Anna; rather a give away for those in the know.

I'm impressed that JMS had the story in his head from the very beginning, and was able to recover so well from people leaving. I wonder how the Valen story would have worked out had Sinclair stayed? Would it have happened much later, perhaps at the end?

I actually thought Talia's exit was rather well scripted & acted...
...though I'd have really hated if that'd happened to Ivanova instead.

(Note to self: need some B5 and B7 icons, STAT! *g*)

Oh, I agree. It just didn't match her earlier character as shown in this ep frex, but it was a good exit for her. It made more sense than it being Ivanova, but I suppose JMS had that worked out.

And yes, I need some B5 icons, but I only have two spaces left. :-(

To me, the way he had to recover to compensate for actors leaving (and a great many of them did) made a lot of the plots and stories seem disconnected and left a lot of loose ends that can't be tied up. You get Talia never really using her telekinesis again and Lyta rather obviously taking over the role. It's not nearly as glaring, though as Sheridan taking over for Sinclair--right down to obviously taking the girlfriend (Delenn) that was obviously being set up for Sinclair.

I still wonder how they would have resolved the Valen storyline if it hadn't happened that way. I personally think it would have made a lot more sense and probably not ended with Sheridan being trapped in the past.

Or maybe it happened at the very end to make a loop.

Yes, Delenn seemed to marry Sinclair in the previous ep, yet of course it's Sheridan. That's another foreshadowing (so to speak) that got derailed.

How much did you watch? Will you see more?

I'm in the middle of season four somewhere. The last episode I watched was . . . 4x10, I think? It was Marcus and Franklin arriving at Mars. I'll probably finish out S4, someday. But unless S4 knocks my socks off in way that the rest hasn't, I don't think I'll watch S5.

But you need to know what happens to Londo and G'Kar and Vir! Sadly S4 was very rushed because they weren't sure they'd get S5 for a long time and it suffers. The resolution of the Shadows and Vorlon thing was so quick and flat and banal. I think S5 is better.

Trust me to post just before bed and get interesting comments. :-P

Well, I heard that they rushed the ending to S4 and that everything was tied up, so it seems to me that S5 wouldn't be neccessary if everything is tied up in S4. I suppose we'll see how I feel, but I can't even manage to get through S4, which people assured me would be awesome and worth the wait, so I kind of doubt it.

XDXDXD I should sleep too. But I feel I should try to write something before bed. Even if it's just 100 words. (Opening Word is the hardest part.)

It so is. I only have a last scene to add to the Multiverse and didn't manage it.

I shall do it tomorrow. Will.

G'night!

I loved Bester!
Remember Trust The Psicorps, the Psicorps is your friend!
Can you imagine a B7 universe where psi powers also figured? They'd definitely have a darkly sinister psicorps too, probably incorporating the psychostrategists.

Oh yes, I loved those Psi Corps ads. B5 is in my top three SF series for so many reasons.

A B7 Psi Corps would be much darker! At least operatives like Talia and Lyta think they're serving the common good.

A nice example of how B5 is great with not forcing everything into big moral judgements of Good or Evil; instead it includes varying view-points and often leaves things open to interpretation.

As for B7 - ahaha.^_^;;; Very much darker. Everyone there was pretty much amoral. *g*
