It's just that when you start thinking about how some factory went to all the effort and expense of manufacturing them, in order that they be given away (and presumably the idea is that some people were actually swayed to buy the cat food by the prospect of getting a free pair of slippers)... I don't know, it just strikes me as strange. It wouldn't happen under any other economic system.
I don't know what ug boots are, but the name alone makes them sound comfortable and anti-fashion, so I approve;-)
