SF DVDs

Last week I rented and watched season 1 of Quantum Leap because I've only ever seen a couple of eps and wanted something undemanding and entertaining. Well, except for the boxing episode which I skipped because giving people brain injuries is not a sport. Sadly, the first part of season 2 is out so, inspired by having seen Claudia Christian as a 50s dame, I resorted to my Babylon 5 DVDs--and I really don't think they've dated at all. I've seen three episodes, and yay for Ivanova, Garibaldi, and my favourites, Londo, G'Kar, and Vir. Last night's ep was Born to the Purple which I remembered thinking was fun when I first saw it, but with hindsight, not so much.

I also have two boxed sets of Star Trek eps chosen by a fan collective, a nice selection I shall work my way through. I was disconcerted to see Spock's father as the Romulan commander last night in Balance of Terror; I suppose it's how Mark Lenard got the part.

"hired"

That's not a term I'm familiar with. I guess it means the same thing as "renting a DVD" means here in Canada.

We use hire or rent. [shrug] I can change it.

[identity profile] kalinda001.livejournal.com 2008-06-08 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
No need to do that. I was just unfamiliar with the term. It expands my exposure to different ways of referring to things.

[livejournal.com profile] jaxomsride pointed another one out in the chapter 15 posting. Something to do with the term "washing up".

[goes to see] Yes, I agree with her: washing up is doing the dishes. [laughs at thought of Avon doing that]

Ah, good ol' B5 never gets old. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-06-08 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
It's one of my favourite series!

I saw that Quantum Leap recently, too.

Mmm, Mark Lenard... best thing in any Trek ever.

He is! He's a joy to watch.

CC actually looked the part too, very like the redhead on the cover of one of my mother's old private-eye books.

Sadly underused. I'm glad they brought him back for some of the movies, but not nearly enough.

Claudia Christian is very 1940s-looking - all curves and square jawbone.

Wow, all those Sarek icons!

She looked amazing. The period detail is well done in QL. It's a pity they don't go closer to their own era and do the 80s but I suppose they didn't feel like history.

[identity profile] redstarrobot.livejournal.com 2008-06-08 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
Only two. But I do love me some Sarek. And I have an unhealthily large supply of Vulcan-themed icons in general.

Yeah, they probably didn't think that the '80s would one day be a historical period. ;) They may eventually, though, who knows.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-06-08 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
And why not? The Vulcans rule.

Yeah, it's weird that my childhood is all history and horrible clothes, but even 10 years ago feels not that different to now.

I must look out for Quantum Leap, I rmemember rather enjoying the few eps I caught on the tele...

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-06-08 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
It's fun and there's usually a little nod to a historical event or person.

I recently finished my watch-through of the whole of B5, and enjoyed it enormously.

What are the episodes on the Trek sets? (Sorry, don't worry if that's a lot of typing!) Mark Lenard was really wonderful as Sarek, wasn't he? I loved seeing him in a couple of TNG stories, though they were sad, too.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-06-08 09:58 am (UTC)(link)
Mark Lenard is one of those actors with enormous presence and a fascinating face.

I'll do a separate post with the episodes as others may be interested too. :-)

Mark Lenard made Trek history as the only person to play a Romulan, a Vulcan, and a Klingon. Because he's just that cool. :)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-06-08 11:06 am (UTC)(link)
He so is. He was the first Klingon with ridges.

I still love TOS very much...

It's a great series! SF owes so much to it.
