Glittery and good things

Once it stopped hailing and thundering this morning (13 degrees C!) we braved the cold winds and went to our local mall to have coffee and a [fruit] mince pie and to prove to ourselves that Stephen Fleming (captain of the NZ cricket team) actually existed off our TV screens. (I have pictorial proof of his independent existence--with me--under the cut.) There was carol-singing from a church group which was nice; so much better than the piped stuff that drives me to consider acts of violence. They had three guys in burgundy choir robes from the Catholic Cathedral yesterday singing a capella which was also lovely.

Anyway. We did very well for ourselves there so I'm feeling much more cheerful.

After [livejournal.com profile] glitterboy1's Tips for luxurious living #219, I wanted glitter gel pens. The book shop didn't have them. They had lovely metallic ones, but no glitter. Sadly disappointed, I decided to try the Two Dollar Shop where things cost $2, or sometimes the shockingly inflated price of $3. It's a weird mix of kitsch, tat, and amazing bargains--Greg bought faceplates and earphones for his cellphone for $2 a piece last week. And they had glitter-pens! I bought a 6-pack for, yes, $2, all different colours. I also got a six-pack of glitter glue in various pastel colours for, um, $2. This can be used as decoration as is, or you can glue shiny things to cards with it. Pity I've done all mine.

Another reason we went there today was that Stephen Fleming was signing his book. And here he is.

SF signing

At $40 a pop, we didn't buy it. Besides, as Greg said, it seems a little odd to have his biography written before his career's even over. I was cheeky and lurked until he was finished, then Greg took a photo of me with him.

SF and me

Then on our way out we saw the LOTR extended edition trilogy on display, so we bought it. Yay! [rubs hands in glee]

Now all I want is Farscape season 4 to complete my holiday viewing. It never arrived from DeepDiscount (whom I shall never use again) so I'm getting my Visa payment reversed. The S4 set is out here now so I'm ordering it from Marbeck's tomorrow. They deliver free and I'll have that this week too. At last.

You is lickle! Or then he's just insanely tall:).

And yay for Farscape S4. *cheers for Sikozu, hopes you'll love Sikozu because she's kickass and nerdy and ginger and hot and not whiny like Jool and kickass kickass kickass eeee*

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2004-12-19 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'm 1.65m (5' 5"). You saw photos of me with Michael Keating and Paul Darrow. I'm half a head shorter than them, so Stephen Fleming is that much taller than them again. [googles] He's 1.88m (6' 2") . MK's 5' 10" so that sounds about right.

I look forward to Sikozu though anyone would be better than Jool. :-P

[identity profile] snowgrouse.livejournal.com 2004-12-19 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, so Fleming is the same height as Tufty:). I only come up to Tufty's *waist*!

Yay for Sikozu! *dances*

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2004-12-19 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Yikes! Only his waist! I knew a couple once who couldn't kiss unless she stood on a chair. As far as I know they're still together.

Fleming is actually much better looking than that photo shows. Tanned, very dark, and with blindingly white Tufty-teeth. :-D

[identity profile] snowgrouse.livejournal.com 2004-12-19 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I can't give impulsive/surprise kisses to anyone, they'll have to lean down to be kissed:). Bastards:).

I'm sure I scanned in that one pic of myself and Tufty where he isn't crouching down to put his arm around my shoulders, but may have lost it:).

Ah, found the one Steve took of The Tufty Club at Star One '03. Tufty's crouching a bit to hug Louise and Flip, and guess who isn't crouching very much, yes, that evilly grinning redhead at the front...

Look, Steven's touching MEEEEEE! Heh.

[livejournal.com profile] vilakins I am very jealous of your glitter gel pens. And as for the weather - sounds like normal Christmas-type weather to me... hee.

[identity profile] snowgrouse.livejournal.com 2004-12-19 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
*squees for you*

I only have a few glitter pens. Possibly dried out by now. Hm, should test them. *begins to doodle a few more golden highlights in Tufty's hair OMG HE IS SO GORGEOUS I DIE.*

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2004-12-19 12:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a selection of lovely metallic pens, some of which have dried out--gold, copper, brass, silver, colours like that. The glitter pens I got were bright colours with tiny bits of silver glitter and I hadn't seen them before. Pity they didn't have some gold too. They were so cheap I don't expect them to last long though. The top of one's already cracked.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2004-12-19 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, at least the traditional hot filling food will be nicer in this weather.

They must have lots of glitter pens in the UK judging by the responses to [livejournal.com profile] glitterboy1's post about them. The ones I got look quite normal when used until the light hits them at a certain angle and you can see the glittery bits. I also like the metallic ones which have been around for a while here.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2004-12-19 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
Aren't you sitting on the arm of a chair there? Hard to tell. Nice pic of you all though.

Just how tall are you? Greg's mum is 1.55 (5' 1").

[identity profile] snowgrouse.livejournal.com 2004-12-20 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, I'm just in a funny position (dunno how I got my hands that way as I'm not leaning on anything). I'm 152 (5'0").

We call them pound shops all my deodorants come from the Newport one usually 2 for £1 and they are brand names( with the most of the writing on them in oriental alphabet only the brand name is in English). Most of my Christmas decoration have come from there too bought over the years.

As we are the same height more or less I would say Snowgrouse's insanely tall applies to Stephen Flemming.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2004-12-19 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
He's 1.88m or 6' 2".

The Two Dollar Shop is Asian-owned (Chinese in this case; I keep forgetting it means Indian/Pakistani in the UK) and all their stuff comes from China. I have no idea how they do it. I bought a set of lovely little hand-lacquered bowls there for $3 each last week.

to prove to ourselves that Stephen Fleming (captain of the NZ cricket team) actually existed off our TV screens.

Oh... I could have told you that! I've seen him at press conferences. Well, I've seen him bat a lot too, but close up means press conferences, usually. I can't say I've noticed his being unusually tall, but yeah, he's reasonably good-looking, and he speaks well.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2004-12-19 12:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I knew you'd have met him! I don't think he's unusually tall. He's 1.88m or 6' 2" which, I'm told, is Tufty-height. I know taller men than that. At one place I worked, three of them had to duck for doorways.

I wasn't planning to get a picture of me with him, but he offered and Greg took it.

[identity profile] glitterboy1.livejournal.com 2004-12-19 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad you had a good trip out! And well done finding the pens - spread the glittery love....

Nice photo, you lucky thing.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2004-12-19 12:17 pm (UTC)(link)
[bounce] It was coincidence, him being at the local mall and me seeing a notice about it. There was a rugby player there the day before but I can't stand rugby; I didn't even know who he was. It's cricket, soccer, and Aussie Rules (I love the robotic refs) for me.

The glitter pens are nice colours but they're all silvery glitter. I was hoping for some gold but I don't think they're that popular here yet or the book shop would have had them. They had a tempting range of metallics but I already had some.

[identity profile] glitterboy1.livejournal.com 2004-12-20 09:41 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes, I have to make do with the metallic ones, depending on the colour I want. For some reason, they seem to have become less available here than they were. (Or maybe shops are just messing around with their stocks because of Christmas.)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2004-12-20 11:26 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, the bookshop had a huge selection of metallic ones, for a lot more than $2 a pen though, let alone pack (Staedtler and brands like that). I still have three undried-up ones left (gold, silver, copper) or I'd have indulged. They didn't seem to have heard of glitter though. Either they're not popular here or they have yet to be introduced.
