The Doctor gets around

I've just seen "Doctor Who: The Fires of Pompeii"--I thought Caecilius was an auctioneer and didn't have a daughter, but sulky pouty teenager Quintus: hah!--and followed it up with a Mrs Bradley mystery. Imagine my surprise to find a young David Tennant (from nine years ago) in that--along with Peter Davison as the inspector. I really fancy Mrs Bradley's clothes (long slinky jackets over shirt and tie) but I'm not tall enough to carry them off. :-(

I will just say that Mrs Bradley and Donna both rock in very different ways.

Oh Mrs. Bradley's clothes make me green with envy, but I am too short for them as well. My memory is non existant today, I just cannot remember the name of the comedienne who plays Donna. Any way, I do not like her as a comedienne but as you say Donna rocks, she reminds me a bit of Barbara Wright one of the two companions he picked up in An unearthly child. And Mrs Bradley is the tops.

Caherine Tate. I didn't like her comedy show either, but she's terrific as Donna, surpassed all my hopes.

Catherine Tate. I've only seen her on YouTube; she's obviously very talented. I hope she gets more scope in future roles.

I should look up the writer of the Mrs Bradley novels. Wow. Gladys Mitchell wrote that books back then too; the first in 1929. She must have been every bit as clever, feminist, and forward-thinking as Mrs Bradley.

Gladys Mitchell wrote the books

I read a couple of hers back in the 60's and remember nothing about them. This means I'll have to go looking for them.

That was the episode of Mrs Bradley that we somehow missed this time round, darn it. She looks fabulous in those clothes, as ever. I shall have to create a character like her in a story, and drape in her all that lovely clobber, because I couldn't get away with wearing a style like that either.

And, yes, Donna rocks too.

They're rerunning it over there? We bought the DVDs and are working through them, Rome, and Jeeves and Wooster when there's noting on the telly. I'd watch Diana Rigg in anything, and in this ep, George rather grew on me when he posed naked for an art class--his expression!

Great icon! We saw the Avengers again a few years ago and Emma Peel is completely timeless; the only character who looks as up-to-date now as she did then.

They turn up every so often on the cable channels: just long enough between showings that we've managed to forget the plots. For some reason they showed them out of sequence this time, finishing with Speedy Death. So they must have shown the Tennant episode first, gah.

I think I might do a rewatch of The Avengers soon as my 'watch and exercise' programme, once I'm finished with Adam Adamant Lives!.

(Icon picked because I think that's the only other 'girl with gun' one I have! Not as cheerful as your Soolin one, though.)

What are these 'Mrs Bradley mysteries' of which you speak? I'm so out of the loop.

This episode of Who far surpassed last week's for me. Having a companion who's old enough to hold her own is a distinct improvement - the Doctor being in love with a 19-year old never really convinced me. Anyway. It's funny that DT comes over as quite young now - he turns 37 on Friday, so would have been 27 or 28 when he did the Mrs Bradley thing, which in acting terms isn't all that young. He's managed to retain his boyish charm into his late 30s, which must be to his advantage.

Sigh. I could wibble on about him all day.

Have a look here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mrs_Bradley_Mysteries). They were made 9 years ago but I'm watching on DVD. I think from what others say that they might be rerunning in the UK. Diana Rigg stars in them. :-D

DT didn't look that different, except for the greased-down hair, but he acts younger as the Doctor.

Oh, lovely! Thank you. I've added the DVDs to my LoveFilm list.

Yay; there are quite a few fans now.

I really enjoyed 'Pompeii', and especially the way they portrayed the family. Just a normal family with normal family problems, plus some.

And an excellent icon for the ep! I enjoyed it too.

Imagine my surprise to find a young David Tennant (from nine years ago) in that--along with Peter Davison as the inspector.

I hadn't realized they'd worked together before! I suppose it's like Canadian television - everybody's done something with everyone else.

And since we're talking about natty dressers, have Sarah Jane in Victoria's dress.

I don't really know the young Sarah Jane. Victoria's dress?

Victoria's dress?

Victoria Waterfield. I think she was a companion of the Second Doctor.

Yes, she used to scream at seaweed.

It was very scary seaweed! And her screaming turned out to be very useful!

*nods* in Pyramids of Mars, Sarah Jane is rummaging around in the wardrobe room, and comes out in the dress she's wearing in the icon - and the doctor goes "Oh yes - that's Victoria's - she must have left it here." And Sarah of course goes "Who?" And the Doctor goes "She travelled with me for a while" (which she did - back in the 2nd doctor era; take that Rose-is-special-because-the-doctor-talks-about-her-after-she-leaves-and-he-never-did-that-before people!!)

There's no reason why Caecilius couldn't have had daughters - apparently there was at least one son apart from Quintus, but girls are less likely to be recorded - though I'd have expected them to be called Caecilia. Evelina sounds decidedly un-Latin!

He shouldn't have survived, though - the CLC killed him off in the eruption, and I think the historical record suggests he's more likely to have died in the earlier earthquake. Also, Peter Capaldi is a lot too good-looking.

Exactly what I thought. Isn't it... Celtic?

Yes, I expected them to save only Quintus. And Caecilius should have been bald with large Nine-like ears.

I LOVE Mrs Bradley. I dont remember David Tennant being in the episodes though - is it 'The Worsted Viper' you mean or the one before?

If he's in 'Laurels Are Poison' that's the only one I dont have, so that would make sense that I don't remember him.

Who does he play?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-04-14 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
He's in 'Death at the Opera' as Max Valentine AKA Massimo Valentino, the art and music teacher. :-)
