Ladyhawke and the influence of a certain thief

I have just finished watching Ladyhawke. Ah, but Rutger Hauer was a hunk, and hee, Rumpole on the ramparts, as Greg said! I did not however recognise Alfred Molina as Cezar.

[livejournal.com profile] entropy_house was right about Mouse being very Vila-like (apart from his constant bargaining with God and inveterate laying--Vila is peculiarly honest that way). His hand gets stood on, he pretends to be several men in the woods, and damn, there was a third thing which escapes me now. [yawns] But hey, it's time for bed and we're going to the Mexican place for a huevos rancheros breakfast tomorrow. :-)

[Edit] I think the third thing was Mouse being called 'little man' several times. As [livejournal.com profile] snowgrouse points out, Kerril calls Vila 'little man throughout City.

He is! I always thought Mouse was very Vila-like:).

I wish I could think of the third thing he did that was almost lifted straight from B7.

I did once find out that Restal was an old French name, so I think Phillipe Gaston was one of his ancestors. [nods]

WOHOOOO!:)

Damn, I'd love to watch Ladyhawke again (even if I don't like the music--so dated!) but damn, I must... I just wish I could get my desktop PC here from the 'rents so I could actually watch and cap DVDs again. This lappy is so full of crap I can't even burn stuff to DVDs, let alone watch movies or TV series with them. WAH.

But yeah, have to watch again to see what the Vila-like thing was... I rewatched it last year or something, and went "EE! that is *so* VILA!" and was very bouncy.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-03-21 11:02 am (UTC)(link)
Actually I rather liked the music, but then I like Alan Parsons. :-P The scenery was absolutely stunning, and I see it was mainly filmed in L'Aquila in Italy; appropriate that it's also the Bishop's name.

I hope you get your PC soon. I only use a laptop when I'm away.

[Edit] Maybe the third thing was Mouse being called 'little man' several times, reminding me of 'the little thief' in bad fanfic. :-P

[identity profile] snowgrouse.livejournal.com 2008-03-21 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, you *know* who calls Vila "little man" repeatedly, so;)...

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-03-21 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course! And I even used that icon. My subconscious knew. :-D

[identity profile] snowgrouse.livejournal.com 2008-03-21 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
'tis but a term of endearment!

It's a long time since I've seen Ladyhawke, but I recall it as being very good. And has Michelle Pfeiffer ever been lovelier?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-03-21 10:54 am (UTC)(link)
She was. They were a beautiful couple.

I did wonder about the eclipse that never actually happened and them being the wrong way round in the pit scene: surely she should have been in the pit in 'night' with him in the daylight?

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2008-03-21 10:58 am (UTC)(link)
It's too long since I saw it for me to remember any details of the plot. I'm afraid.

The eclipse does happen; it's during the climactic moment. You can see it through the cathedral's broken window.

Ladyhawke is one of my favorite movies, from the gorgeous scenery to the story to the acting and music. I love Mouse. Etienne Navarre and Isabeau are the most romantic doomed lovers ever, and John Wood as the Bishop is compelling.

*happy sigh*

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-03-21 11:52 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, but it never gets dark. I watched coverage of the total eclipse in England a couple of years ago and it gets very dark very suddenly at totality.

Agreed on everything else. :-)

Ah, you're right. It's dim, but only enough to give the scenes a lovely sepia tone.

Maybe it got dark after we cut away from the final scene. ;)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-03-21 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
It's dim when Isabeau appears in the hall, but when they cut to Mouse and Imperius and the onlookers, they're in full daylight. Bad continuity probably and easy enough to correct, but hey.

The eclipse we see BTW also isn't accurate (the sun would have a bite out of it, but the moon wouldn't be visible) but that's a minor nitpick in a film in which special effects really don't matter. The characters, the scenery, and the music override them. :-) I'm just an inveterate scientific nitpicker. :-P

I told you you'd like Ladyhawke when you said you'd got the DVD.

It is a joyous movie, isn't it ? So much to like about it, from the actors to the scenery and the dialogue. Though when I first saw it, I thought "Ooo, that monk's being played by Number 2."

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-03-21 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed, and the music's wonderful too. :-D

I'm surprised that Greg, major Prisoner fan that he is, didn't say something about that, but for me, Rumpole of the Bailey is the definitive Leo McKern role. :-)

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2008-03-21 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Ladyhawke is one of my favourite films... I often listen to the soundtrack. :) Mouse did remind of Vila, funny that...

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-03-21 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I suppose it's a type: the amusing, clever thief. :-)

Oh yes, Ladyhawke is good.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-03-22 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
And just the sort of thing I wanted to watch last night. :-)

Hey, you're away! Do you have access up there?

[Edit] Duh; of course you do! Ignore that. Besides, I've seen your post.
