Problems with the boycott

Since [livejournal.com profile] hafren has pointed out the anti-Semitism connected with it, and especially considering the day it's being held on, I have deleted my previous post saying that I was taking part.

[Edit] OK, the choice of day was a complete red herring. I am very glad about this.

Woo. Party at my place!

Or not. But yeah. I never thought it was a good idea. X_x

I'm about to go to bed, but I'll be around tomorrow (still Friday in the UK).

:) Night you.

Okay...I followed the link, but I'm still confused. What?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-03-21 10:38 am (UTC)(link)
Some of the protesters are anti-Semites, attacking the owners of LJ not for their business decisions but their ethnicity. It's particularly worrying that a day on which many pogroms have happened was chosen.

[identity profile] mistraltoes.livejournal.com 2008-03-21 12:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm, well the original organizers of the boycott are Jewish, so I don't know which is worse: to let somebody icky be on the same side as you, or to let them shove you off your own side. It's a hard choice. Though I'm not fussed about the boycott anyway.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-03-21 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, really? I was very worried about the day chosen when I heard about the anti-Semitism. That's a bit less sinister then.

In any case, my deleted post said that it wasn't an effective protest.

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2008-03-22 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I suspect it *was* an effective protest, because LJ ignored people complaining about the Interest List filter, but within a few hours of the no-content strike being announced in the News post comments the filter was negated.

It's just that an ex-employee said they wouldn't notice and that postcards were much better.

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2008-03-22 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
The only address we have for Sup is in Mother Russia. They certainly aren't going to pay someone to translate them and read them to the boss.

The 6 Apart address is in Ca. but all they're doing is handling advertising accounts until Sup takes them over, too. They don't care if LJ explodes.

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2008-03-21 10:42 am (UTC)(link)
I had no idea that there was an anti-semitism connection to this.

I very much doubt that SUP can be getting massively rich from LJ. It must be fairly expensive to run and, people being as they are, I imagine that the great majority of existing accounts are free ones. So I can understand their feeling it necessary to withdraw Basic accounts for new sign-ups.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-03-21 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Going by my flist, most new people seem to choose plus accounts because they get more icons and a wider choice of layouts. I set my communities up as basic accounts and I'd like to keep that option.

My anger at the sneaky way SUP did this pales utterly in comparison to how I feel about certain of the protesters and especially the day they chose.

[identity profile] the-summoning-d.livejournal.com 2008-03-21 10:43 am (UTC)(link)
Oh. Okay: less confused now. Why does the involvement of idiots spoil so many things?

Damn, there goes my excuse for not having a new fic up today...

[identity profile] kalinda001.livejournal.com 2008-03-21 12:28 pm (UTC)(link)
anti-semitism
hmm I had no idea there was that element to it. I didn't like that it was being held on this particular day though.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-03-21 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought they'd just picked a day, but the choice of this one is particularly sinister.

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2008-03-22 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
The person who originated the idea [livejournal.com profile] beckyzoole is Jewish and the day was chosen partly because Friday seemed like a good day post-wise, and it was the closest Friday to when she came up with the idea (and she also thought it being a holiday would make it easier for people). I saw her original post and discussions.

Antisemites latched onto it because they would have latched onto ANY protest against Sup, or against Anton Nossik.

I heard about the anti-semite connection not long before the strike began and I wondered if in fact it was NOT anti-semites but someone trying to disrupt the strike. I decided to ignore it after checking it out and finding that they had nothing at all to do with the beginning of the strike.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-03-22 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
It's a relief to hear that the day was not significant. Thanks.

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2008-03-22 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
The timing made it really hard for people to check out- I only heard the anti-semite story half an hour before the strike was to begin. If I'd believed it, I wouldn't have participated.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-03-22 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
The fact that anti-Semites had joined in was enough for at least three of us.

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2008-03-22 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
It's a tough call. I felt that I wasn't going to give them the power over me to influence me in either direction, but I certainly understand everyone who felt that even remote association with them was wrong.
