Pasifika Festival

I haven't even started sorting my holiday photos yet, but here are some from yesterday when we went to the Pasifika Festival. As usual, it was a fine, hot day and we walked about 5kms around all the stalls, sampling food and watching various dance groups.

Dancers from Kiribati

Wooden statues for sale. I was very good and only bought food this time.

No Pasifika is complete without the huge inflated tin of corned beef, Samoa's favourite food!

AHahahhaha, great pictures--very vibrant! Only wish there were more. But I guess I'll have to wait for the holiday photos for "more" in that sense. Looks beautiful though--the sky is so blue in that last one!

There are some more in the gallery (http://pics.livejournal.com/vilakins/gallery/0001yw91). Last year's Pasifika pics are here (http://pics.livejournal.com/vilakins/gallery/0001hct9). :-)

Thanks!

That is such an exotic looking 'county fair', though from the sound of it it's more like the Great Exhibition than our county fairs.. You were very good to limit yourself to food, if I had been with you there would have been massive depredations of the jewelry I can see behind the wooden statues and the bits and pieces on the first picture.

Ah, but that's only because I've bought up large other years!

Looks good. :)

And, through gritted teeth, congratulations on the cricket.

Yes, I thought it would be a draw today, but there was a slight collapse in your batting order. :-P But hey, take consolation in the fact that we've only won 10% of our test matches against England.

Nice holiday pics. Thanks for sharing those. And LOL on the huge inflated corned beef tin.

They're pics from Saturday, not my holiday (I have 100s to sort out and choose from). The tethered corned beef tin is of the win!

That like, and yet so unlike the Birdedge Village festival that I help out at each year.

Both have stalls, and dancing displays, but ours is very English, and the Pasifika looks so exotic.

It is! There are 'villages' from 10 Pacific islands (including NZ AKA Niu Sila in this case) dotted through a large park, and a celebration of all the different cultures. It's huge: about 230,000 went to it.

OOh, looks like it was a wonderful festival.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2008-03-09 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It was great. It's become an annual event for us.

I love country fair sorts of things. It's great because it's so individual- hand made items and amateur/semi-pro performers. And everyone is so excited! I can get a 'contact high' just walking around.

That looks like fun! Glad you enjoyed yourself.

It is fun: lots of different types of food and crafts--and singers and dancers whom I love to watch. :-)

Great photos... love the corned beef. :-p

It's always there. It cracks me up. Beside it is a corned beef stall offering the stuff chopped up with onion, spinach etc. Eep.
