Summer is a-coming' in!

Not only are the pohutukawa trees (see icon) in bloom already which means a long and dry summer (I hope), I heard my first cicada today. Yay!

As for 6A selling LJ off, they say that "SUP has launched an American company, LiveJournal, Inc., to manage and operate LiveJournal globally" which sounds a lot better than a Russian company. Also Brad Fitzpatrick is going to be on the advisory board "which will be comprised of both industry experts and members of the LiveJournal community." This could be good. I hope. I really hope.

Advisory boards mean something in the vicinity of fuck and all. The board of directors has power over the direction of a company; the board of advisors is a volunteer prestige gig on both sides, usually involving a meeting every financial quarter to generate some general non-binding advice. It's a nice gesture to make Brad Fitzpatrick a member of the advisory board, but it doesn't give him any say in how the company is run. This isn't to say they won't listen to him - they may - but it's entirely voluntary on their parts. A board of advisors is, in general, more for PR than function.

I've waded through some of the comments on the post & the stuff the Russian users say is pretty scary. I hope it won't be what they are warning. But I think a certain amount of pessimism is reasonable.

Either it will be bad, or it will be not bad. Worrying about it beforehand just puts one's blood-pressure up. I have a permanent account, I'm not leaving any time soon.

On the plus side, at least this new company is supposed to be for LiveJournal only, rather than considering LJ to be an afterthought in their portfolio.

I think it would have been pretty inexcusable of them not to...
