Necklace and earrings for my sister

I suddenly realised it's my sister's birthday next weekend and that I needed to make up the necklace and earrings I've had the bits for since months ago.

Very simple and quick to do. I don't think it scanned that well because of the reflections and glitter. The necklace has a piece of dichroic glass I bought a while back (the most expensive part), crimped to keep it in place so the catch doesn't work its way round to the front; I hate that. I decided to make her two pairs of earrings (not dichroic; some other glittery glass) which will bring out the teal and pink respectively in the glass. The pendant should hang just at her throat, but if she wants a different length, I now have the skills and tools to redo it easily enough.

Now I just need to wrap them up carefully and post them to her.

They're beautiful! I love dichroic glass.

So do I! I just found a small deep green piece I bought for myself which I'd forgotten; must make that up too.

Absolutely gorgeous!

Thank you!

Your sister is very lucky. A present like this, made by hand, is so special.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-11-18 08:44 am (UTC)(link)
I hope she likes it. They're the sorts of colours she goes for and the pendant should match a lot of her clothes.

Oh they are gorgeous... lucky sister!!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-11-18 08:46 am (UTC)(link)
Now I can do this, I'll ask her if she has any commissions. :-) It'll solve the old problem of what to buy her.

Looks lovely. I like your icon too, I hope that you enjoy that well-earned glass of red wine. :)

Thanks, but it turned out to be riesling. The icon's from a site where you assemble it from different elements. :-)

Pretty! (reminds me, I need to scan in the one I did while I was visiting you)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-11-18 10:09 am (UTC)(link)
You should!

Have you done your dichroic glass one yet? I used a silver seed bead either side, then a crimp (which looks bigger than it is due to reflections) which also hides the rather large hole through the pendant.

You should!

I actually wore it on my birthday, having fitted the earrings to clip-on fittings. 8-)

Have you done your dichroic glass one yet?

Not yet. I'm wondering if I should use tigertail for it or maybe get a very fine chain.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-11-18 10:20 am (UTC)(link)
Did anyone notice it? I got compliments on the first necklace I made (the green and blue one) when I wore it the other day.

A chain would look nice too as yours is larger. The advantage of tigertail to me is being able to crimp the pendant in place so the catch doesn't work round, plus my Mondrian dichroic one was done in that style. Actually the shape of yours might make the large hole in it not so obvious, and you can probably get the catch of a fine chain right through it. :-)

Have you worn the purple one with the earrings you bought at the market?

(Off to bed now.)

Did anyone notice it?

Well, the only people I saw that day were my parents, when we went out to lunch, and yes they noticed it. But I think I actually drew it to their attention, so it may not count.

Have you worn the purple one with the earrings you bought at the market?

No, I need to change over the earrings to clip-ons first.

But I have worn the blue magnetic necklace I bought at the market, last Friday, when I was giving my talk.

Have you worn any of yours yet?

The magnetic ones? Yes, two of them so far. :-)

Oh, very nice. She should appreciate the choice of earrings, too. I think I'd be tempted to wear one of each!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-11-18 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought of that too! She's a lot more conventional, but they're the same style so she could do it.

[identity profile] hafren.livejournal.com 2007-11-18 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
very pretty! Those earrings would almost tempt me to get my ears pierced...

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-11-18 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[livejournal.com profile] kerravonsen makes clip-on ones for herself but I didn't wear earrings till I had mine pierced. Clip-ons hurt unless I loosened them, then they'd fall off, so I gave up.

There's a certain happy medium in adjusting clip-ons so that they neither pinch nor fall off. Some styles can't be adjusted.

[identity profile] san-valentine.livejournal.com 2007-11-19 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I used to have some clip-ons made completely from plastic. They were much more comfortable that the ones with the regular metal clips, and stayed on pretty well. I also had a couple of pairs with screw fastenings, which I liked, but both kinds were difficult to get hold of.

I gave in and had my ears pierced so I would wear the lovely earrings I saw in shops. I try to keep the collection to not too many over 100 pairs...

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2007-11-18 01:57 pm (UTC)(link)
They are beautiful and made by your fair hand, she's sure to appreciate the extra effort you went to. Far moer special than something just bought from the shops.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-11-18 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I bought all the bits from a shop! And now she can request something to go with a special outfit, or a colour she likes. :-)

[identity profile] san-valentine.livejournal.com 2007-11-18 03:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooooh - pretty, shiny things ! I love the colours in those, and dichroic glass, and shiny and...

How nice to have a choice of earrings to wear with the necklace. You have wonderful colour-sense.

For myself, I'd prefer more rounded, flowing shapes for the glass. But that's just what I'd choose for myself. No criticism of your work.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-11-18 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I do too; I have a rounded-edged one I adore that I bought in the market, but these shapes are what the bead shop has and the colours were nice.

[identity profile] redstarrobot.livejournal.com 2007-11-18 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, how lovely! That's a pretty awesome present.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-11-18 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope she likes it!

You're interested in dichroic glass, aren't you? If you let me know the sort of colours you like, I could send you a pendant.

[identity profile] kalinda001.livejournal.com 2007-11-18 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Those are beautiful

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-11-18 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-11-18 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks!

[identity profile] nautile26.livejournal.com 2007-11-18 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
That is a beautiful gift. Such a good idea to do the two sets of earrings too!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-11-19 08:43 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks; that way they should go with more colours. I hope. :-)

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2007-11-19 08:38 am (UTC)(link)
Very nice... :D

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-11-19 08:41 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I posted it today. I hope she likes it too.
