Finish-a-thon story: Silent and Alone

Here's my finish-a-thon story; many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] astrogirl2 for her as ever excellent beta-reading.

Each writer provided a selection of unwritten stories for people to vote for, and for me they chose more PGP angst with Vila and Avon.

Story: Silent and Alone
Fandom: Blake's 7
Description: Vila is so depressed after the previous year and what happened on Gauda Prime, he withdraws and prefers his imagination to real life. All efforts to get through to him fail, and finally Avon takes him to Kaarn in the hopes that Dr Franton might be able to help him. When they get there, they find someone unexpected.
Type: Gen
Rating: PG13
And here it is:
Silent and Alone

A sweet ending...but isn't it strange that three Finishathon stories brought Cally back in some form? Must be an Auron mind-control meme...

Vila and Tyce? He certainly does have a taste for dangerous women!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-10-28 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
She made people vote for them.

Vila's good at wishful thinking. :-)

They do? Man, I'll have to go read more of them...

Vila and Tyce? He certainly does have a taste for dangerous women!

To be fair, that's the only kind that exists in the B7verse. :)

entropy_house had Cally's memories from when she was on Ultraworld stored in an android, and mine had the universe saved by a creche of Cally clones...

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2006-10-28 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that was the summary of mine, so you have to blame the voters. :^)

[identity profile] shimere277.livejournal.com 2006-10-28 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
But Cally was not mentioned in mine, and I don't think in Vilakins' either. Auron mind-control, I say.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-10-28 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
No, I didn't mention Cally, though people might have guessed she was the person mentioned in my description. I'll go with the mind-control though.

[identity profile] redstarrobot.livejournal.com 2006-10-28 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yay, I like this! In large part because it's a PGP that's not focused on either glory or despair, but recognizes that most people go on with their lives in the same small ways they always did.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-10-28 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it. I wanted to write something different from my previous finish-a-thon PGP.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2006-10-28 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
You know, when we were talking about this one, [livejournal.com profile] vilakins mentioned that she felt it might be a bit unoriginal (or words to that effect) and I said that, well, it was kind of a standard PGP h/c scenario in a lot of ways, but it was a pretty good one, so not to worry. On reflection, I think part of what makes it work is the fact that Nico is very good at that sort of restraint. A lot of these kinds of stories go in for big, over-the-top drama and major character changes that happen almost instantaneously, and so on. I think that "life goes on" quality rings a bit truer.

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2006-10-28 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks - that was a great (and bittersweet) story at times. :-)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-10-28 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Like the curate's egg, it was good in parts? ;-)

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2006-10-28 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, all parts were good. :-p

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-10-28 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks!

BTW, there isn't an official post up yet because the ficathon organiser's computer died, but there's a temporary post (http://community.livejournal.com/multific/8991.html) with links to stories in the comments: HP, more B7, Doctor Who, a B5/B7 crossover, Firefly, and more. :-)

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2006-10-28 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for that! I will definitely have to check out the B5/B7 crossover... ^_^

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-10-28 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
It's well worth it!

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2006-10-28 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
I liked Vila's kitty. :^)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-10-28 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
It was hardly in it! I was worried about the cuteness factor.

(e-house too lazy to switch LJs)

[identity profile] kerr-avon.livejournal.com 2006-10-28 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
It could have bit someone. :^)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-10-28 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure it did on Lindor, hopefully a politician. The only ones it would bite on Kaarn would be Avon and possibly Lietta; the other Auronar liked it and it could tell.

[identity profile] kerr-avon.livejournal.com 2006-10-28 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
My brother's cats know he loves them, but from time to time two of them get over-excited and bite him. Generally when food is involved.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-10-28 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Claudia bites gently out of affection; Tessa never does.

[identity profile] linda-joyce.livejournal.com 2006-10-28 10:50 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely the vicar's egg not the curate's. I just love your Vila -Avon interaction and this has not disappointed in the slightest. And you brought back Cally very believably, yay

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-10-28 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely the vicar's egg not the curate's.

:-D

And you brought back Cally very believably

Who knows what the Auronar are capable of, and there's a distinct pause in 'Rescue' before Avon says he's sure she's dead.

[identity profile] hafren.livejournal.com 2006-10-28 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Really like that. Particularly how it manages to do some very believable and ingenious plotting without once making me think "more bloody plot" - the character interaction is always going on at the same time.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-10-28 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I'm so glad it works. I can never tell until I get feedback.

Yay! Lovely Vila as usual. And Cally, and Avon, yay!

"That's right. Are you going to imply that I was weak because I needed it?"

Touche. I love how Cally doesn't let Avon get away with things.
And I love how she dragged Vila into Avon's workshop and made them stop avoiding each other. With that sort of breath of exasperation in her voice. And how Avon started asking Vila to hand him tools, and he did.

Heh, I wonder what Soolin's reaction would be when she saw how big a cat Vila's "cat" is... Was that inspired by the Lion man's lions?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-10-29 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
No, more by the tame cheetahs you can pet at the Auckland Zoo. I think Soolin will 1) think Vila's crazy to trust an animal that size and 2) will find ways to use it to intimidate the people who might be threatening Sarkoff.

I thought you'd like the Avon and Cally bits. :-) I think once Avon started acting as he had on the Liberator, Vila was able to fall back into the old habits of their friendship. They had to take different paths though, because so much had changed.

[identity profile] quarryquest.livejournal.com 2006-10-31 10:22 am (UTC)(link)
I loved this ... just as I loved the other one you posted recently (the one about Vila's hands).

Sorry I'm not getting much posted on LJ at the moment - life is chaotic and I am just trying to keep myself together until I get another decent rest at Christmas.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2006-10-31 10:38 am (UTC)(link)
'The Hand of Friendship', also a finish-a-thon story! Thank you (and thanks to [livejournal.com profile] kerravonsen for the great idea of a finish-a-thon).

But you have to tell us all about your day with Gareth and Michael! And when the programme will go to air. :-)

[identity profile] quarryquest.livejournal.com 2006-10-31 12:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I will, promise, maybe at the weekend.
