Slightly more organised

I am soooo tired--physically. I've been reorganising and cleaning and tidying after Greg finally got rid of some of his hoarded junk: 6 cubic metres of it. I reckon there's another three to go, but at last the piles of DVDs and books are now off the floor and tables and onto the newly-cleared shelves. I haven't sorted them at all; that comes later when I decide how to do it. Then when I can actually find things, I won't buy DVDs and books I already have, like I, Claudius and 1066 And All That. At least I realised in time about the latter and cancelled my order. :-P

Ahhh, everything looks so tidy and uncluttered. The trick is keeping it that way.

I also have a new mobile. My old one's battery died yesterday and that's it apparently: they discontinue the batteries six months after the models, so I had to buy a new one. Nice little revenue spinner, that. Why can't they have standard batteries? Anyway, the new one is very cool, flips open like a tricorder, and is a sort of pale gold ('champagne'). I shall have to read the manual to figure out all the new features and the synchronisation software. Up till now I've lagged behind in phone tech, inheriting Greg's discards.

Right, off to bed coz it's Monday tomorrow. Oh yay. I'll have to get two weeks' work done in one since I've got next week off. And somehow find some time to finish the, well, finishathon story which I still don't have an ending for.

Ooh tech envy. Clam shell phones are all the rage here after being unobtainable for a couple of years, and of course it was during those years that my old phone died. I find that when it comes to tech I still live by my early training which can be summed up in one short sentence
"If it still works you don't buy a new one" So I can't bring myself to replace it.

Yeah, I'm the same. My last cellphone just had tiny keys and a green and black display, very basic, but I'd have been happy enough to keep it. I only used it for, you know, actually ringing people and being rung. :-)

This one has heaps of features. It has e-mail (which I won't use; too expensive) and a calendar and other things that could be useful. :-P

You are noble and good. We are going to have fun. And this could well be the quiet resting type of fun. Because we both need to relax.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-10-14 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
True. I am so looking forward to getting up later and having leisurely breakfasts.

Speaking of leisurely breakfasts, do you have Hubbards cereals? There was a short period when they exported a few of their cereals here, and I loved them, but I can't get them any more. So I was hoping to have some when I was with you. My favourites were the Berry-Berry ones, but I expect there's heaps I've never seen.

Someone is making lots of money...

ooooh new phone. One thing I love about being in a place like Taiwan is that you can get the latest in tech stuff long before it reaches N.America shores and it's cheaper here. Is that the same in NZ?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-10-14 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you and Singapore are ahead of us, but I think we're pretty up-to-date. :-) Nothing is cheap here though.

It's much easier to dump stuff when you're alone- you don't need a debate over every item. I am *so* looking forward to the monthly bulk pickup next week. It'll probably take me an hour to drag everything to the pile.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-10-14 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
But it's so wonderful and liberating to see it go!

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2007-10-14 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly! Moving stuff out gives me so much more AIR. When I do the bulk pile, I should take a photo, it's going to be huge. My 'staging areas' are crammed so full I hesitate to add anything else--I've got tree trunks, a wood & iron bench, a glass-fronted cabinet, a big mirror, etc. etc.

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2007-10-14 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I bet the scavengers will snatch bits before I finish piling it all up. :^)

The queen size mattress & box spring will take some horsing out... I sure *HOPE* they don't take that. I know there's an underground factory network that puts new fabric on them and resells them. Very unhealthy, particularly when it comes from a house with cats who didn't like the owner of the bed.

[identity profile] glitterboy1.livejournal.com 2007-10-14 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, well done both of you with the throwing out and re-organising. I find the prospect of hugely daunting, and so I'm pretty bad at doing it. But it really *is* satisfying when you've done, isn't it? I hope you're pleased with the results so far. Will you be able to get Greg to do some more throwing out soon?

Good luck with getting all your work done this week - you'll deserve your break by the end of it!

[identity profile] jthijsen.livejournal.com 2007-10-14 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're bad at reorganising, try doing it a bit at a time. Start in the first cluttered corner that catches your eye and clear that away. Don't think about the rest yet, you're working on that one corner first. Then, when it's done, step back and enjoy the little bit of tidyness you've just created. Then, when you feel up to it, start over with another pile of clutter. Repeat whenever you feel up to it.

It may take a while this way, but if you do this at least once every day, you'll find it won't take you more than a few weeks (a month, tops) to get your entire house reorganised and mostly clutter free (a little clutter is unavoidable, you're still living there, you know).

I try doing this once a year and my rule for throwing things out is: if I haven't so much as touched it for more than a year and it isn't there to look pretty, it goes into the garbage or to a recycling center. This includes technical stuff and clothes and on occasion even books. In all the years I've been doing this, I've found that only twice have I thrown something away that I then later needed. And since those things weren't very expensive, I felt that the lack of clutter totally justified the very minimal expense of buying the stuff again.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-10-14 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
That's easy when you live alone. I used to be very tidy! But when you have nowhere to put the clutter because the shelves and cupboards are full of junk belonging to someone else, that's a problem, and it was mine for the last couple of years. :-(

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2007-10-14 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods* Mom wouldn't let any of her *garbage* go out, and neither would Ken. I didn't see any point in throwing out and clearing out my own stuff, because the moment I did, they'd move their junk into the clear patches.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-10-14 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah yes. And into the kitchen and anywhere with space. :-(

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2007-10-14 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods* It's *SO* much easier when you know that blank space will stay blank.

[identity profile] jthijsen.livejournal.com 2007-10-16 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
Very true. I think I'd get into a big fight with those litterbugs. I'd probably wind up either throwing away junk behind their backs or moving out.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-10-14 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Now Greg's done some--and seen how good the place looks--he said he'll do more in smaller amounts each week. :-)

[identity profile] jthijsen.livejournal.com 2007-10-16 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
Just show him the bit I wrote about not missing the stuff. It might ease his mind some more.

[identity profile] astrogirl2.livejournal.com 2007-10-14 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay for cleaning stuff out! Me, I love having stuff, but only if there's somewhere to put it. Living with someone else's teetering piles of crap is kind of crazy-making. :)

Good luck with the finish-a-thon. I finally figured out what I was doing with the rest of mine, and scribbled done some good notes so I wouldn't forget, and then promptly lost all interest in actually writing it out. Must start poking myself about it soon.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-10-14 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't have much time for it this week (e.g. Tessa goes back to the surgeon today for her final--I hope--check), but I'll see if I can muster some interest in getting back to it before Friday. There was a reason I hadn't written it.
