SGA and questions

We've also been watching SGA and have just seen the S2 cliff-hanger and the start of S3 (so we're a little behind). I'm liking this series more and more, esp now the Wraith are getting more interesting. Rodney is wonderful. I want Rodney to meet Avon. I'd put half my money on Rodney and the other half on Avon. ;-)

I have two questions however, one of which is pretty general, but the other is a bit spoilery though I tried to despoilerise it.

Wraith diet. Why do they have to eat humans? They can't raise cattle or similar beasts and feed off them? Cattle would have the advantage of growing to a large size very quickly and they wouldn't fight back. I gather that the Wraith seem to suck potential life from people (a bit like the weeping angels in Doctor Who) and cattle don't live as long, but the size of their life force would to some extent counteract that.

Pinpointing one spot in the universe. Two ships are travelling between the Atlantean galaxy and ours. Space is unimaginably huge and pretty featureless between the galaxies, yet Zelenka calculates where the ships will come out of hyperspace to make repairs. The Daedalus then turns up right where the other ships are. Eh? How is that possible?

Did I miss something?

I've just started watching it as well but since I'm doing it on Sky I'm way behind on the first series i.e I haven't seen it. But I have seen the cliff hanger and the denouement of which i will not speak. The impression I got from not watching the first series is that the Wraith are vampires with technology and possibly an empathic need to have the food animal intelligent enough to know fear.

As for Rodney, I'd divide my money into 3 and put the third bit on Vila. Rodney strikes me as having a lot of his traits too.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-09-11 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yes, he's very open about his fear, talks about being selfish, but comes through for people even if under protest. I was thinking in terms of him and Avon going head-to-head using technology and snark. Rodney hates it if someone else challenges his genius status. He's my favourite, though I love looking at Shepherd, Teyla, and Ronin.

I hadn't thought of them eating fear as well as life.

I think of Rodney as a combination of Vila and Avon too, actually, while John is sort of a mixture of Blake and... Cally?

Rodney comes out with some wonderfully Vila and Avon lines, and like both of them, protests that he doesn't care but comes through for his friends.

Jenna! She's a pilot and a good one. :-)

Oh YAY, you are watching SGA! Come in to the fandom! It is the best fandom ever!

1) Because WRAITH ARE EVOL.

2) No. You didn't. The science is just that bad.

I find with SGA that it's easier just not to ask any questions. The answers are inevitably depressing.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-09-12 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
I'm enjoying it and the characters a lot (RODNEY!), but I'm not sure I'll write for it. I'll have to wait and see if a plot tribble grabs me.

The science is just that bad.

I'll accept big rumbly spaceships in vacuum because the sound gives an impression of size and power, but nooooo, really? SG1 used to do pretty well with its science, esp physics.

[identity profile] toft-froggy.livejournal.com 2007-09-15 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Here's hoping! *crosses fingers*. Have you read any fic for it yet? There's some really great stuff out there.

To be honest, I probably wouldn't know if the science was any good or not beyond the most basic level. For the ep you're speaking about, I only have the vaguest recollection of what actually happened - isn't Zelenka *trying* to have them re-emerge near the other ships, and has based it around planets they were stopping at for feeding? So presumably all he had to do was have them reemerge by that planet (although that may still be totally scientifically wrong).

I've been avoiding SGA fic because of spoilers. Also I'm not interested in PWP or shmoop which most fic for any fandom seems to be. So far I'm happy with the on screen stories, though once I'm caught up, I'd like to read some good Michael fics. :-)

They were between galaxies. There weren't even stars in sight. Space is big. :-( I have a physics degree and have often been delighted by the good physics and astronomy in SG1 (though yeah, there's a lot of bad stuff too). And don't get me started on the language thing in either.

[identity profile] toft-froggy.livejournal.com 2007-09-16 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my god, the language thing. It upsets me. I try to pretend it isn't really there. There have been some great fics which play with it, though.

I think you should look at [livejournal.com profile] trinityofone's stuff - most of what she wrote was during S1 and early S2, and she's a brilliant, brilliant sci-fi writer, some really awesome ideas. Hardly any schmoop.

As for Michael fic, I've had this one on my to-read list for ages - apparently it's fantastic, really chilling and interesting. The Human Stain (http://tevere.livejournal.com/7165.html).

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-09-16 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks; that was extremely well written and believable.

The language thing annoys me in almost every ep I watch. Also the fact that almost all societies are European medieval, though I had to laugh at the last ep I saw where Rodney was going on about villages all looking the same. :-D

Why do they have to eat humans?

They've never really gone into it, but I always got the impression that whatever it is exactly the wraith eat, it's unique to humans. Animals don't have rarefied enough chi, or whatever.

Eh? How is that possible?

...Zelenka is an almost!super!genius, and he had Rodney check his math. Besides, physics don't work in the stargate universe the same way they do in ours, I'm convinced of this.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-09-12 09:58 am (UTC)(link)
I like the chi explanation.

Physics worked pretty well in SG1. Some of the eps were impressively accurate.

The ships were damaged and had to stop part way for repairs. No one, no matter how intelligent, would be able to calculate the exact spot in that incredible vastness, let alone know where to drop out of hyperspace to find them; it's not like it has motorway exits.

OK, I'll just give up and ignore that gaping plot hole. :-P Anyway, that whole thing from the beginning to the end was an utter fiasco and I just know it'll come back to bite them. Damn, they could've had a Wraith ally; they lost their chance to teach Michael what compassion and forgiveness were.

I'm amazed they still have the Daedalus left. They've been going through ships like a hot knife through butter.

I think I missed those episodes - my SG1 is spotty at best.

*giggles at mental image*

Good LORD yes. But saying more would be spoilery.

Damn, they could've had a Wraith ally; they lost their chance to teach Michael what compassion and forgiveness were.

Oh, Michael. I adore him as a character, and as what he represents to Weir.

I'm amazed they still have the Daedalus left. They've been going through ships like a hot knife through butter.

Near as I can tell, while their other ships have to fight the Ori, the Daedelus' sole job is to zip back and forth from Atlantis and occasionally fight the odd wraith.

An experiment that didn't work? Such a waste and so unfair. I normally like Weir, but he was treated so badly (like O'Neill with the replicator guy). She lost her chance to have her own Seven of Nine. I can't see any good coming of that now.

The Daedal us is a bus! How galling for the crew.

I'm disappointed the whole Orin thing was never resolved, but I suppose that's realistic.

If it makes you feel any better, she is haunted by Michael - I think he's her big regret. But no - no good comes of it. (Not yet, anyway - show's not over.)
