Day 11 - Roman centurion and sundial

Today's entry for the [livejournal.com profile] naarmamo National Art Making Month challenge is the Roman corner in my garden, sort of. This is my Roman centurion statue, a sundial (marked in Roman numerals, but designed for the southern hemisphere) and a plant (agave, I think) on the deck outside the kitchen. I didn't want to do the background (see this photo, complete with clivias, which I based it on) so I just did a suggestion of one. I am not happy with this, but I've spent far too much time already on it. :-P I'm doing something simple tomorrow.

Roman centurion and sundial

My NaArMaMo 2007 Gallery is here.

I love the way you draw, I really do.

Thank you! I was really in two minds about posting this one.

"... (marked in Roman numerals, but designed for the southern hemisphere)..."
So cute comment! :D

Hey, it is a really nice copy :)

Thank you; gracias!

Yep, sundials are different here. I note that ours is no longer in alignment. We move it and the statues regularly so it doesn't get too damp under them.

I think the 'suggestion of the background' works really well.

Really? That's a relief!

Could have been a bit busy, otherwise. (Something's wrong with my fingers today - do you know how many tries it took me to type that one small sentence? This assignment really *does* have to go tomorrow, for my sanity, let alone the deadline for it...) I agree, it's fine like that.

Exactly! Thanks. :-)

The centurion's legs look a little odd, though that's a tricky pose to draw. Overall a good work though. The sundial looks very pretty and the subtle splash of colour from the plant and pot works wonderfully. The muted hues of the your graphics tablet (I assume that's what you are using) reproduce the terracotta of the pot very well. Your use of shading and the way you've blended colours here is lovely.

He's kneeling on one knee and the other's up with a hand on it. The angle wasn't good to show that, being right in front, but I wasn't going out there to sketch him in winter. I suppose I should have taken a new photo from the side, but I'd started so I finished.

Ah, I see how he's posed more clearly now. The angle of the shoulders confused me about which was he was facing. It all makes more sense now.

Aww you missed the Bast Statue.
I like the centurion. Its impossible to see from the photo but is the sundial's gnomon really bent like that.
I like the muted background it makes the pieces really stand out.

I thought three pieces looked better than four. I could do Bast on her own though. :-)

The gnomon: Yes, it is. I ventured out to take a close up because it didn't show in the photo. It's prettier than that though.

Thanks! :-)
