vilakins: the stars, Matariki (Pleiades), mark Maori new year (winter)

The wrong trousers, I mean month

I have to say that August is not a good month to be doing a daily art challenge in. My weekday evenings seem to be much busier than usual. For example, the next three (starting tonight) are:

  • picking Greg up from the airport
  • children's puppet show rehearsal (yes, I'm doing that again; it was easy to say yes a few months ago, but I have to admit it's fun)
  • Russian class.
Coming up next week are:
  • an art lecture
  • a fund-raiser celebrity chef cooking demo I bought a ticket to two months ago
  • Russian class
  • more puppet show rehearsals
All of these things are very good things, but all together? And what's worse, all of this is in the dead of winter. I hate going out on winter nights, not just because it's cold, but because road markings disappear completely on wet roads here, and this makes me very nervous.

Oh yes and I also have to write my story for the stupid Hirothon that I thought--wrongly--was a good idea. At least there won't be much work in putting up a link post for about three stories. :-P

I sympathize with the overwhelmingness and the scary weather conditions, but, man, that does sound like a fun schedule, anyway. Makes me think about the fact that I really ought to get out and do more, myself, instead of just sitting around in front of the computer all the time.

But it was a good idea! It still is a good idea! Quantity ain't everything, you know. Bringing three Hiro stories into the universe that didn't exist before sounds like a good thing to me. And I'm definitely looking forward to reading yours.

A couple of them aren't far away which is a relief, but going out to the airport on wet and not that familiar roads? So not fun. Eep, I must start heating up my dinner (fish cakes I made last night and salad); I'll have to leave in less than an hour.

And how am I going to catch up on all my recorded stuff (esp since Greg's been away for 5 days) when I'm out all the time? :-P

I thought lots of people would grab the chance to put an adorable and fun character into their favourite fandoms, but it just didn't catch on. I probably don't know enough people.

Oh yeah, and I'm planning to do a "save the bounty hunter, save the galaxy" pic for it, so that knocks my decision not to do any more fan art (AKA lead balloons) for NaArMaMo on the head.

If you figure it out, be sure to let me know! I'm in all the time, and I still have trouble keeping up! Even though almost all the good shows are on hiatus for the summer here.

Getting the word out might have been an issue, yeah. I'm also getting the strong impression that a lot of people are getting burned out or spread thin on fic challenges these days. There seem to be tons of them all the time. Even I can't keep up with all the interesting ones.

And that's saying something!

I definitely am. Finish my very late Multiverse story, do the finish-a-thon, and that's it for me. For this year, anyway.

I have my Hirothon story, finishathon, the FC labour day story (if they ever set a topic) and the alteregothon one which isn't due till April I think, which is a relief.

I think some of the potential Hirothon writers already took up the Heroes crossover ficathon which was announced not long before.

And, hey, it got me to write fic, anyway. 8-)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-08-06 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't see that, or I'd never have tried to do one.

[identity profile] san-valentine.livejournal.com 2007-08-06 11:10 am (UTC)(link)
Heroes has only recently started on terrestrial over here, so I've only seen the first four episodes. I hadn't seen any when you announced the fic-a-thon, so Iwasn't really going to be taking part.

I hope you get good stories.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-08-07 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I know I have one good one; I already beta-read [livejournal.com profile] kerravonsen's. I'll be surprised if I get more than that and my one.

Eeep, definitely busy! It sounds like fun stuff, but I know what you mean about winter evenings. I really don't like driving in the dark and wet. I hope your trip to the airport has gone ok.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-08-07 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
It was dry (amazing at this time of year) but wet at home by the time we got back, so that was fairly painless.

I am depressed about the fact that the ground never dries out because it rains several times a day and our deck is slimy and scary to walk on and we have moss everywhere. I heard today there's some really good stuff for the moss on our driveway and entrance, but I suspect rain would wash it away before it worked. :-(

[identity profile] glitterboy1.livejournal.com 2007-08-07 08:53 am (UTC)(link)
Phew, I'm glad that that journey went ok.

That's annoying about the moss. Is there any predictable pattern to the rain? I'm not surprised that winter gets depressing there, with so much rain... :-(

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-08-07 10:38 am (UTC)(link)
I found the stuff on line and they actually say rain helps activate it, so I'm getting some. A colleague said it was really good.

I want to live in Europe. I liked their winters.

[identity profile] glitterboy1.livejournal.com 2007-08-07 10:58 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, good! I guess, if it's sold there, it figures that it can cope with all the rain! :-) I hope it will help.

Oh, hon. I wish we could swap. We have a heatwave. Not even the tiniest breeze of wind, either. I just looked at the thermometer on my kitchen window and it's +40... o_O Ok, so the sun is shining straight through my windows, making this place like a damn sauna. Noki is even lazier than usual, the poor thing just lies in a lump and sheds more than ever. So, yeah. Wanna swap NOW.

BIG HUGS. I'm struggling a bit with the Masterathon and flailing. Also, everyone taking part in Naarmamo is making my already ridiculously high-volume flist very hard to keep up with, so sorry if I haven't commented on yours or anyone else's stuff, I just can't keep uuuuup. Augh.

But, yes, *HUGGLE*.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-08-07 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I only know three other people doing NaArMaMo so that's not that much extra volume for me. I wouldn't worry; I only read posts on subjects that interest me.

Today is coooold (remember we don't have central heating or double glazing, so you would NOT want to swap; Russian friends have never been so cold before) but at least the sun's shining. Probably for only about half an hour. :-(
