vilakins: (books)

Book, DVDs and DRDs.

OK, I'm back with the Book, a very cynical-looking plush owl to go with Athena whom I bought last year. This might also be a good time to post a link to my analysis of Half-Blood Prince because I'd lay money on being right about Dumbledore and Snape. :-)

I also bought DVDs:

  • A three-film collection of Pride and Prejudice (the latest one which I haven't seen), Elizabeth, and Shakespeare in Love.
  • Another three-film collection of Casablance, Gone with the Wind (I might finally break a lifetime habit and see it; eep), and Doctor Zhivago
  • A doco called How William Shatner Changed the World with him holding a papier-mache rock on the cover. It's Trek-tech, about how scientists were inspired by Star Trek as kids to develop a lot of the stuff we use every day now. It's hosted and narrated by Shatner so how could I resist?
  • The Wall (the musical)
  • The Dark Side of the Moon (the making of)
And speaking of plushies, I want a plush DRD, and I'm tempted by Rygel (and the last four words are not ones I ever thought I'd put together).

I missed that Shatner documentary when it was on... I didn't know it was out on DVD. *goes to netflix to look it up*

[LOLs at your icon]

I'll let you know what it's like when I've seen it, but it looked like it would be interesting and, I hope, funny. Shatner is one of the funniest guys on TV right now.

The icon's by someone called Echo. (I don't remember the name of her LJ, I'm afraid.) Isn't it great? :)

I did find the DVD at Netflix, so it's on my queue now.

The Shatner DVD is worth a look.
I love the plushies!

I might not get round to it for a few days (film festival!) but I look forward to watching it.

I'm fairly sure I've seen the Shatner programme on TV over here. If it's the one I'm thinking of, it was entertaining.

I've seen one excellent documentary on the making of 'Dark Side of the Moon'. If it's a UK production, it might be the same thing. And I love 'The Wall'.

The DRD plushies are fab. I'm seriously tempted by them. And your comment on being tempted by Rigel made me laugh :)

I look forward to seeing it. The 'Dark Side of the Moon' DVD came from Australia but from my days of updating Dick Smith's website, I know that most of those are British originally, as I used to get the cover pics from Amazon UK.

I'm almost certainly going to buy them, plus the DRD toy (http://www.trollandtoad.com/images/products/pictures/101625.jpg) because it's cheap enough. :-) [worries a bit about slowly decreasing bank balance]

Cool - nice haul!

Do let us know what you think of the Pride and Prejudice. I rather like it as a thing in itself.

And enjoy the Book!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-07-21 08:17 am (UTC)(link)
I was pleased.

I will! I gather some didn't like it but I've enjoyed all the adaptations I've seen.

I'm 1/5 though despite having to brave the weather (wet and thundery) to go to a film. If it wasn't for the film festival, I'd stay home and warm and dry in an armchair with book and cat(s).

My mum, who is a nut about P&P (the book) rated this latest film version (I'm assuming this is the Keira Knightley one?) She liked both the leads; her main gripe was with Donald Sutherland as Mr Bennet. If it's got her approval, that's the only approval it needs as far as I'm concerned!

Think carefully before watching Gone with the Wind. It's almost 4 hours of your life you'll never get back (and I speak as one who's seen it twice, for my sins). The ending is such an anticlimax after you've invested so much time in it! IMO.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-07-21 10:05 am (UTC)(link)
It is indeed the Keira Knightley version, and I like Donald Sutherland (though of course he may not be up to scratch in this).

Greg warned me GWTW was boring too. I won't rush to watch it.

I think the DS problem was one of miscasting rather than his skills as an actor. I haven't seen it yet so it's all hearsay!

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2007-07-21 10:12 am (UTC)(link)
So your reaction to the ending was "frankly my dear, I don't give a damn"? :)

[identity profile] matildabj.livejournal.com 2007-07-21 10:21 am (UTC)(link)
Ssshhh, don't give away what happens! :D:D

[identity profile] san-valentine.livejournal.com 2007-07-21 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I like GWTW, both film and book - especially the book. Scarlett's a fascinating heroine, a very complex character. She's very self-centred but at the same time has a strong sense of duty to her family. She'll do the wrong thing for the right reasons, and the right thing for the wrong reasons.
The book is more subtle than the film, and has a sly sense of humour in places. But I love the film too. And the costumes are gorgeous.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-07-21 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks; it's good to get some different views.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-07-21 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't worry; I pretty much know the story and even some scenes I've seen parodied.

[identity profile] matildabj.livejournal.com 2007-07-21 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I wasn't being serious! I can't imagine there are many people who don't know the ending of Gone with the Wind.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-07-22 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Bwahahaha!
