Classic Doctor Who theme

After several people saying that the sound of drums is from the classic theme, I searched for a vid of it.

And they're right!

That so took me back to my childhood.

Heh. I just listened to that, too, for the same reason. Well, not because I had to check, but because, y'know, it was there, and I'm obsessed. And then I listened to three other versions of the theme tune that were on my iPod. Because I'd apparently played That Other Song enough, finally.

And now I keep tapping out the drumbeat. I think I might need some kind of psychological help. :)

I know who you voted for then.

I did! I went to his website (http://www.votesaxon.co.uk/index) and somehow found myself clicking in a "yes" vote!

They obviously didn't!

Well, I suppose some of those were from non-citizens and don't count, anyway. :)

How sad of me is it to know that it's the Troughton version? Season 5 if I'm not mistaken. The hissing/swooshing sounds give it away:).

Me, I think The Sound Of Drums is obviously the sound of the massive centrifugal force Roger Delgado's coffin must be now experiencing,...

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-06-25 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think I saw any Troughton, so it can't be so very different to other seasons. I did see some of the B&W originals with One a few years ago; they ran them after the B7 reruns that seduced me, but then stopped.

Oh, yay, that icon!

One of [livejournal.com profile] redscharlach's wonderful DW ones. :-)

Is it just me being nostalgic, or is it better - both aurally and visually - than the curren t version?

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-06-25 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I like it better; it's more Who-y. :-)

Here you go: the original Hartnell version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnhtmFXqjVQ)! Very cool and rather creepy graphics, even now.

Thanks. Even before I look, I can see those graphics in my mind's eye.

It's the orchestra, they sap at the unsettling electronic goodness. At least the middle eight, or whatever it's called, is back in the closing version. I wish they'd put the Doctor's face back in the title sequence too.

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2007-06-26 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I think my main complaint about the current version is that it's too fast. I supposed it's all tied in with the idea that the production team seems to have that frenetic pace = excitement.

[identity profile] satan-pingu.livejournal.com 2007-06-26 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! I do like some of the string sequence though, and it still gives me goosebumps, but not to the same extent the original and the Orbital versions do.

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2007-06-26 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes to all of that.

As the oldie here who watched DW on original broadcast, may I say that isn't drums going "bump, di-bum" in the classic theme. It's a ruler being twanged on a table to give the notes which were then spliced together to give the continuous beat. The radiophonic workshop was good at using noises in those days.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-06-25 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? I thought they just used a synthesiser.

[identity profile] reapermum.livejournal.com 2007-06-25 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
They hadn't invented synthesisers way back then.

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2007-06-25 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
As the oldie here who watched DW on original broadcast

You aren't the only one. :) But I didn't know that they used a ruler.

It's amazing the trivia you can pick up from Radio Times.

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2007-06-25 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Oddly enough it doesn't sound right as just a drum beat because to me its not a discrete sound.
The rhythmn might be the same but I'm hopeless at that.
Speaking of "Who" theme tunes I like the way John Barrowman singing it (David Tennant though is picking out the "drum" beat in the background too - evidently "the sound of drums" was having an effect before the episode was even made.
