vilakins: the stars, Matariki (Pleiades), mark Maori new year (winter)

Sunrise on the shortest day

When I got up this morning, it was dark, but by the time I was dressed I could see a beautiful pink sky outside. So I braved the cold and rushed out to take some photos.

The first one I took, shivering in our driveway

Just a minute later and the colours were already fading

"Red sky in the morning, Delta's warning" as they say (well, I do). And sure enough: by the time I was on my way to work, it was raining. I coughed all day--oh, the joys of winter. I'm so glad the days will start to get longer now, even if winter's just hitting its stride.

How beautiful. And the icon is lovely too. How lucky we are to be able to communicate like this, so I can be cooled down at midday in a sticky English summer, by a crisp winter morning sky.

Hope your cough improves soon.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 11:07 am (UTC)(link)
I don't mind most calendars being six months out of sync for that reason. :-) It wasn't that crisp today though. It was wet with that bone-chilling damp that really gets to me.

My cough lasts all winter, one of the many reasons I hate it so.

And thanks! I made the icon a few weeks ago. The stars are the Pleiades which recently rose and mark Maori new year, Matariki, which lasts about a month. I hope to go to a hangi if the weather's not too wet.

[identity profile] linda-joyce.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
The sky is called a mackeral sky in Wales and possibly England too and has the Weather Rhyme:-
Mackeral sky, Makceral sky
Sometimes wet and sometimes dry

Combine that with
Red sky in the morning, shepherds warning and it got your weather forecast just right.

Beautiful to look at but not nice to be in, have some blueskies and sunshine to cheer you up.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I did quote "Red sky in the morning, Delta's warning" and said it was spot on by the time I went to work. The first saying's not very helpful though. :-)

[identity profile] linda-joyce.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I noticed that when i looked at the pictures again in work but I had posted by then, I plead a late night, early morning and a warped brain due to excessive rain.
The first saying's not very helpful though
I agree, I take it to mean if you see that sky in summer wear a sundress and carry an umbrella but since that's SOP for a British summer day it is rather stating the obvious%D.

[identity profile] san-valentine.livejournal.com 2007-06-21 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
I learnt that saying as:

Mackerel sky, mackerel sky,
Not long wet, not long dry.

Which essentially comes to the same thing, of course. Expect showers.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-06-21 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Now that saying makes more sense. The sun's out today though the barometer still said rain. Yesterday though was wet and windy and blew some of my outside pot plants over. Yet again.

[identity profile] linda-joyce.livejournal.com 2007-06-21 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
A friend of mine knows it as Often wet sometimes dry but even that breaks down to showers with bright spells, but slightly more pessimistic.

Amazing pics! No fair, even in winter u guys get better weather than us (we had thunder & lightening yesterday - and it wasn't even a proper storm, just growly). *jealous*

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 11:14 am (UTC)(link)
Don't be. Auckland is a rainy, damp place in winter and a sauna in summer. Today was horrible: wet and windy and cold. We also don't have central heating or double glazing here and the damp really gets in. There's a good reason so many people have bad lungs, and a large city can exist without a river. :-P I'd love to live on the east coast but there's not that much work there. Or Europe. I was really healthy in Europe.

But it was a very beautiful sky. We live on a hill and often watch nice sunsets, but it's rare I catch a really nice sunrise like that.

[identity profile] sorsha-khan.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 11:30 am (UTC)(link)
Awww. Well I hope the coughing & spluttering & all has stopped. I think I'm just feeling edgy 'cos I haven't been home in a while. I love uni, but hate living in a city; esp on as flat as Portsmouth. Hills are something of a myth round here ;-)
To be fair, we often get really amazing sunrises/sets, but I'm not very good at taking pics so never do them justice. On a chippier note, the sky seems to have cleared, so I may risk putting my washing out... toodles x

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 11:50 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, but flat cities have their advantages too: you can go for walks without steep hill climbs, and cycling's a lot easier.

I have to say, most of my photos of sunsets are disappointing. I'm amazed these turned out so well.

And now I'll take myself off to bed (having stayed up late unpacking a new espresso machine that came today).

[identity profile] sorsha-khan.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Night-night then! Love the icon *cuddles tear bear Vila)

And how could anyone not? ;-)

Well, it was wet and windy and cold on the first day of the Chester-le-Street Test, just six days off the summer solstice. But better since then, in the North at least, and thankfully no sign of a heatwave yet after that horribly hot week in April.

(And thanks for the beautiful cloudscape!)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
And England did well, or were you supporting the Windies? I saw that you saw the new Sir Ian there.

[identity profile] alinewrites.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 11:07 am (UTC)(link)
beautiful pics. The colours are incredible!!
Winter... *sigh* Here it's hot as hell. We are *forced* to go swimming every day. Life is too hard. ;)
Take care of yourself!

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 11:18 am (UTC)(link)
I have decided to wear long-sleeved underwear tomorrow after being not quite warm all day. :-P Eep. It'll be those pink long johns my grandfather wore next.

That first photo is gorgeous! Thank you for your shivering :)

I'm so glad the solstice is upon us - as ever, I'm fed up with the dark. And the cold, but that doesn't seem to correspond so reliably with the calendar any more, so I'll stop expecting it to.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 11:20 am (UTC)(link)
I was amazed they came out so well!

Yes, the seasons seem to have slipped by about a month, so winter will last till at least September. [whimpers]

[identity profile] zoefruitcake.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 11:13 am (UTC)(link)
wow, looks spectacular. I love looking at the sky.

Hope your cough improves x

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 11:23 am (UTC)(link)
We get some beautiful sunsets here. That's the first sunrise I've taken pics of though, and it was spectacular.

It should do by late spring. :-( [posts a hopeful icon]

[identity profile] pussintweed.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, those photos are gorgeous. I especially love the first. I don't think I've ever seen a sunrise that vivid.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think I have either! That's why I rushed outside to capture it.

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty skies! I hope your health improves.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
It will in spring. :-P

[identity profile] entropy-house.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Hurry up SPRING! I feel rotten myself today. I suspect I overdid a few days ago & it's taking its toll belatedly. *grumble* Things to DO!

[identity profile] glittermouse.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
What amazing pictures! Thank you for braving the cold to bring this to us. Delta's warning indeed - probably means Avon is going to make him do some work. :)

Like someone said before it is called a Mackerel sky over here, wonder if you could B7-up that rhyme as well as the red sky in the morning rhyme?

Mackerel sky, Mackerel sky,
Cally's possessed and we dont know why?

I saw The Web for the first time last night. The Decima are soooo cute. Hehe.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"Work? But I don't want to break a lifelong record!"

Hee! [uses appropriate icon]

You haven't seen the whole series yet?

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Wonderful photos you can almost smell the rain in those clouds.
Hope your cough improves! (You must be allergic to winter)

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm allergic to this country; it's the mould, I think. I thought I'd grown out of it when I lived in Europe where I was really healthy, but the second day I was back here, I had to go to the doctor for drugs. I wish I was allowed to live in Europe again.

[identity profile] jaxomsride.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd offer to swap I'm sneezing and have apermanent sore throat from Hayfever.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I get that too for a lot of the year. I was fine over there though; I think my threshold levels just weren't reached, whereas they're flooded here.

[identity profile] jhall1.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Gorgeous photos. They really deserve a wider audience.

I hope that your cough soon goes, even if it would be against the odds by the sound of it.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
You can link to them if you want, though the formation isn't that interesting; just the colours.

[identity profile] san-valentine.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooooh, pretty ! That first one especially would make a lovely desktop pic.
We do get noce sunsets round here, but as the hill that Crookes sits on is between me and the sunset, the views are rather limited.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Feel free to use it if you want. :-)

Living at the top of a hill gives us good views in all directions except where blocked by trees or neighbours' houses, but the best view is west.

[identity profile] communicator.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Those photos make me feel nostalgic for winter. Beautiful

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
!!! You wouldn't be nostalgic for our winters: grey and wet. I miss the crisp, snowy German ones though.

[identity profile] glitterboy1.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
That first one is absolutely gorgeous! It always surprises me, how quickly that light changes - and how fortunate you are, when you get to see it.

I'm glad (for you) that this marks a turning point towards longer days again, and, eventually, the end of winter.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes; it's the nicest sunrise I've seen for a long time. Mind you, I'm usually asleep when they happen.

The seasons seem to have slipped back a month here though, so there are about 3 more months to go. :-(

[identity profile] snowgrouse.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty! We're getting sunsets/sunrises (at this point in the summer they blend in together so you can't tell them apart) like that here. Ever since I was little I thought patterns like that were like the chest feathers of a hawk, like there was some giant bird in the sky.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
They do look like feathers or scales! I've seen long wispy pink clouds that look like huge brush marks in the skey, like the artist was caught at it. :-)

WOW! That first photo is fantastic. Wow.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-06-20 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I was surprised and delighted it came out so well.

[identity profile] imhilien.livejournal.com 2007-06-21 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Great photos! The sunrise yesterday was lovely, wasn't it.

I hope you feel better today... I know I was cold 'n miserable at work yesterday.

[identity profile] vilakins.livejournal.com 2007-06-21 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
So you saw it too? :-)

I do feel better today: still coughing, but nowhere near as much.
